Hiking from Lukla to Phakding in Nepal is just a small 7.8km trail, but it is the altitude that will bring you fatigue, I flew in from Kathmandu to Lukla and the body experienced a change of close to double from 1,400m to 2,860m and for someone from Singapore where the highest hill in Singapore is Bukit Timah Hill which stands at 164m in altitude, that change can kill anyone who isn't able to adapt to it. #gohiking

The first day of actual trekking is a gentle start from Lukla with just three hours hike to the village of Phakding. The trek is mainly downhill through Rhododendrons, Magnolia trees, and pine forests. We were also fascinated by the simple yet appealing architectures of the settlement festooned with prayer flags, mani stones, and prayer wheels. The Nomad has truly become my home in Nepal. I was genuinely impressed by the high standard of the establishment and its rooms. The staff were extremely professional, and both the manager and Riya went above and beyond to meet my needs. During my Mount Everest expedition, Sanjay ensured I was well-cared for, rested, and regularly checked on me. He even assisted in verifying and collecting the necessary gear. Sanjay's support extended to booking my flights to Lukla and arranging Teahouse accommodations on my route to Everest, which saved me from potential administrative challenges. Without his assistance, navigating these logistics would have been deeply confusing. Next year, when I return to Everest with six South Africans, I wouldn’t dream of staying anywhere else. Sanjay has completely redefined what hospitality means to me.

My wife and I did the Gokyo/Renjo La Pass trek with Epic Adventures in April/May 2026, and we had a fantastic time. Everything was well organized, and the scenery was stunning. We started by flying into Lukla and trekked through Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Dole, Machhermo, and Gokyo, with rest days in Namche and Gokyo to help with acclimatization. From Gokyo, we hiked up to Gokyo Ri and the lakes, then crossed Renjo La Pass and descended through Thame. The views from Gokyo and Renjo La were among the best we’ve ever seen. Our guide, Gyanu, was very knowledgeable and took great care of us throughout the trek. Shree, the owner, had guided us on a trek over a decade ago, and he ensured everything went smoothly, including the transport. Our porter, Sanjaya, was also excellent. The trek was private, which was just the two of us, and we really appreciated that. A few tips if you’re planning a trek at this altitude: we reached about 5,400m at Renjo La and Gokyo Lakes. It’s quite cold and the air is thin, so it’s a good idea to do some cardio beforehand. The tea houses aren’t heated, so bring a Kindle or cards to pass the time. Make sure to pack warm sleeping gear—we wore gloves, beanies, and jackets to bed, yet it was still chilly. Hot water bottles and extra blankets are available for an additional cost, as are charging and wifi. This trek offers a similar altitude to Everest Base Camp but with far fewer people on the trail. If you enjoy this kind of trekking, we highly recommend it.

Regrettably, I developed HAPE, but Dorji ensured I got a helicopter back to Kathmandu despite the challenge of finding one during the busy departure period from Everest. He took me to the nearest hospital, where he knew the doctor, who helped me recover quickly. When I returned to Kathmandu, Sushil, co-owner of the hotel affiliated with SummitClimb, assisted me with obtaining last-minute visas to Bhutan. Furthermore, when a wire transfer delayed my payment, the travel company owner covered the $2,000 cost until the transfer cleared. SummitClimb truly has an extensive network of kind and highly professional members, and I definitely plan to climb with them again when I attempt to summit Everest. P.S. My original expedition was Lobuche East and Ama Dablam. Due to the HAPE and extra expenses (oxygen and personal sherpa) for climbing Ama Dablam safely, I chose to visit Bhutan instead.

In 2022, I trekked the Kumbuh Valley and met Ang Chi, who worked as my porter. Then in October 2025, I joined a group of three for a Mera Peak summit. Throughout the trek, we stayed in different small hotels almost every night except during acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar and higher up the mountains. The porters always ensured our bags were waiting for us by the time we arrived at our destinations—a welcome relief after long days of dusty, exhausting trekking. Changing clothes and slipping into comfort was a small luxury that made a big difference. Our guides were the heart of the experience. Far beyond simply leading the trail, they were attentive and caring, checking on every group member during meals and ensuring everyone was comfortable and healthy. Their warmth and professionalism made the trek far more enjoyable, helping me forget about the basic accommodations and tough conditions. I wasn’t physically prepared for such a grueling trek, but I learned that determination was as crucial as physical fitness. I chose not to take Diamox, instead relying on intuition and pacing myself. In hindsight, mental strength was as vital as my physical endurance. Sadly, after leaving Everest Base Camp, I faced a bout of food poisoning at a lodge in Namche Bazaar. The final 20 kilometers to Lukla became the toughest part of the journey. Heavy rains made it even more challenging, but the scenery remained stunning. Throughout, my guide Paban stayed with me, walking at my slower pace and providing constant support. On the last day, he even carried my backpack to lighten my load. His genuine kindness and care proved that the most extraordinary part of the trek wasn’t just the views but the people who journey with you. The team impressed me every step of the way, ensuring safety and a nurturing atmosphere. As a solo traveler, I felt supported and safe, thanks to the assistant guide, who consistently led the group from the front, while the lead guide stayed at the back to help anyone struggling. Milan also accompanied me to hike Nagarjun Hill when none of the others wanted to join—this made the experience special and safe. Together, we shared a memorable sunrise at Kala Patthar, watching the first light hit Everest. Standing amidst the highest peaks of the world, I knew every difficult step had been worth it. Their dedication inspired complete trust. For future trekkers: bring your own sleeping bag. I rented one, and while functional, it carried an obvious odor—owning one would provide extra comfort. Also, listen carefully to your guides—they know best. Avoid eating meat during the trek; I regret my decision to order yak meat in Lukla, which caused severe stomach issues. Trust me, it’s better avoided. More than a trek to Everest Base Camp, this was a journey of self-discovery. It taught me patience, resilience, gratitude, and the importance of trusting myself and those around me. Every challenge, doubt, and triumph became part of an unforgettable experience. Lastly, a tip for solo travelers: always keep your backpack with you at the airport or inform your guide before stepping away to avoid unnecessary stress. Puja was excellent! I recently finished the Three Passes Trek and had an unforgettable experience. It was the toughest trek I’ve ever done, but the breathtaking views made it absolutely worth it. As a solo female traveller, I found this incredibly reassuring, and I highly recommend them to other solo female travellers looking for comfort and reliable support during their trek. My guide Puja was truly outstanding. She maintained a perfect balance of professionalism and attentiveness, while also being approachable and fun to spend time with. By the end of the trek, I honestly felt like I had gained a new friend. The trip didn’t go entirely as planned due to factors beyond anyone’s control. Our flight to Lukla was cancelled because of bad weather, but Puja handled the situation calmly, reorganizing everything smoothly. During the trek, I also experienced food poisoning and had to stay an extra day resting in a guesthouse. Puja acted promptly, checked on me frequently, and ensured I recovered properly before proceeding. She kept a close eye on weather conditions throughout the journey and ultimately decided to cancel one of the passes because of adverse weather. While I initially felt disappointed, her decision was clearly the right choice and underscored her professionalism. Thanks to the Himalayan Masters team, I was able to enjoy two fantastic helicopter tours and a wonderful, albeit brief, trekking experience (with a helicopter return). During the first helicopter tour, I reached the Annapurna Base Camp from Pokhara airport. The view at Annapurna Base Camp was truly extraordinary. As for the short trekking, I hiked to the Everest View Hotel starting from Lukla. Although the return to Lukla was planned by helicopter, the cloudy skies and lack of visibility from the Everest View Hotel led the exceptional Himalayan Masters team to take me by helicopter to Kala Patthar before heading back to Lukla. Kala Patthar offers a strategic vantage point with spectacular views of Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse. The Himalayan Masters team stands out for their exceptional expertise, kindness, organization, resourcefulness, and reliability. Absolutely recommended!

A very helpful and friendly team organized our flights conveniently from Kathmandu to Lukla. Due to bad weather, our flight was returned to Kathmandu before reaching Lukla. Santosh immediately arranged an alternative helicopter flight, allowing us to reach the mountains the same day. Flexible return dates were no issue either. They greatly eased and enhanced our stay in Nepal. We will definitely use their services again next time.

My husband and I booked Adventure Great Himalaya for the 3 Passes and Everest Base Camp trek. Everything was well-organized, and they communicated efficiently via email, answering all my questions ahead of time. They even let us borrow some gear. They arranged comfortable accommodations and transfers so we could start our trek successfully. Both our guide Krishna and porter were friendly and helpful, making the trekking experience enjoyable. Krishna was encouraging throughout, tailoring the trek to our preferences and ensuring we didn’t rush unnecessarily. Unfortunately, my husband became ill, and we had to stop at Dingboche. Krishna provided excellent support, helping us extend our stay in town so my husband could recover and assisting with visiting the local clinic doctor. Though Krishna suggested alternate routes to continue the trek, we ultimately decided it was time to head down. He was understanding of our decision and helpful in organizing a helicopter from the town below since my husband couldn’t trek back. Krishna also re-arranged our flight from Lukla, ensuring we returned to Kathmandu as soon as possible. Upon arrival, our accommodations were arranged for the remainder of the trip. While alternative tours were offered for the rest of our stay, sadly, we were both too unwell to participate. Although our trek did not go as planned, we greatly enjoyed the beautiful start of the journey.
