Does anyone know?! These 8 places are great for kids to play right after getting off the high-speed train.
The two worst things about taking a high-speed train with a kid are: the kid getting bored and mom going crazy. I've been to these 8 places, and you can play right after getting off the train without the hassle of renting a car. They're either cool and fun, or at least one of them is enjoyable.
01 Baicheng | Jilin
The Da'an Nenjiang Bay Tourist Area is the highlight of this trip. The wetland boardwalk is flat enough to push a stroller around. When the kid gets tired, they can squat down to watch the water birds, giving you a chance to catch your breath.
⏰ Enter the scenic area before 9 am; the light is soft and the breeze is cool. Don't force yourself to stay awake at noon; there are shady benches by the wetland where you can lay out a picnic mat for a nap.
📍 It takes about an hour by taxi from Baicheng Station. I recommend booking your return trip in advance, as it's hard to find a taxi in the evening. If you don't want to take a taxi, you can take a bus from Baicheng Bus Station to Da'an and then transfer to a local car to enter the scenic area. However, with a kid, two transfers are quite tiring; if you have a group, hiring a car is more convenient.
⚠️ Mosquitoes are more ferocious than you might imagine, so don't skimp on long pants and mosquito repellent. Ticket and shuttle bus prices are subject to official announcements on the day of your visit. It's windy near the wetlands, so bring a light sun-protective shirt for your child; it will protect them from the wind and mosquitoes. Summer weekends are busy with local families, so go on a weekday for a quieter experience.
02 Changsha|Hunan
I recommend splitting your trip to Tianxin Pavilion and Yuelu Mountain into two separate days. The city wall at Tianxin Pavilion is short; a couple of laps is enough for kids. For Yuelu Mountain, take the gentle slope from the East Gate; strollers can make it, but remember to bring a light jacket as it's windy at the top.
Make reservations in advance for the Hunan Provincial Museum; it's closed on Mondays, so don't make a wasted trip. Children might be afraid of the floor where Lady Xin Zhui is located, so ask before entering.
🍜 The rice noodles on Pozi Street only sell until 10 AM; they close up shop after that. Huaminglou is in Ningxiang; the high-speed rail and bus transfers are a hassle, so it's best to skip it if you have young children. For convenient accommodation and dining, choose locations near Wuyi Square or Yuelu Mountain University Town, accessible by subway. You can also take your kids for a stroll along the river in the evening.
⏰ The best time to climb Yuelu Mountain is before 7 AM – less crowded and cooler. After 10 AM, it gets very crowded with tour groups. If there are fireworks at Orange Isle on weekends, check the times in advance. If you're with kids, arrive early to secure a good spot, as the subway may have crowd control measures after the show.
⚠️ Changsha summers are hot and humid, so bring a sun hat and a water bottle. The museum is air-conditioned, so pack a jacket for your child.
03 Chuxiong|Yunnan
Yuanmou Earth Forest is the kind of place where kids will exclaim "Wow!" The earthen pillars resemble castles, and you can run around freely. Wumao Earth Forest is less crowded and great for taking photos, but the roads are bumpy, so give your child motion sickness medication beforehand.
⏰ The light is best after 4 PM, when the earthen forest turns golden. Don't go if the midday sun is unbearable.
The Yi Ancient Town is lively in the evenings, with the atmosphere at its peak around the Torch Festival. 📍 The handmade yogurt sold in the ancient town was so delicious that kids would practically gulp it down. You can take a high-speed train from Chuxiong Station to Yuanmou, which is faster than a bus, but you'll need to hire a car to get to the Earth Forest after getting off the train. It's recommended to arrange a round trip with the driver in advance.
⚠️ There's no shade in the Earth Forest scenic area, so bring enough hats and water bottles. Food options are limited inside the scenic area, so eat well in Yuanmou County beforehand, or bring some bread and fruit to tide you over. Accommodation is scarce during the Yi Torch Festival, with prices doubling; book in advance if you want to experience the festival.
04 Anyang|Henan
Peach Blossom Valley in the Taihang Grand Canyon is a refreshing escape. The streams are shallow, so kids can wade in the water. However, there are many steps, making strollers unusable; a baby carrier is more reliable.
Yinxu is more suitable for older children; the oracle bone inscriptions and chariot pits can be fascinating to explain. Very young children will get bored, so don't force them to go.
📍 There are buses from Anyang Station to Linzhou, but the service is infrequent, so it's recommended to leave early. For a comfortable stay, Linzhou city proper offers better value than the area near the scenic area entrance, and you can even have a hot meal in the evening.
⚠️ Signal is weak in the canyon, so arrange your ride in advance. Bring an extra pair of sandals and a change of clothes for your child if they get wet while wading. Peach Blossom Valley has visitor limits during peak season, so it's best to buy tickets in advance through official channels to avoid a wasted trip.
🍜 In the city, try the flat rice noodles for breakfast; they're spicy, so get a non-spicy version for your child. Anyang's rice noodle soup and fried dough sticks are also worth trying, though they're on the sour side, which your child might not like, so try a small portion first.
05 Guoluo | Qinghai
The high-speed rail doesn't reach the First Bend of the Yellow River; you have to transfer in Xining. But it's worth it. The wind is strong on the grasslands; your child will chase the clouds, while you can just stand and relax.
⏰ July and August are the most comfortable months; other months are unbearably cold. The altitude is high; if your child shows signs of altitude sickness, descend immediately—don't push them.
📍 The viewing platform walkway is well-maintained, even for the elderly. The journey from Xining by chartered car is long; consider staying overnight in Madoi or Dari. Don't rush through it in one day, as it's too strenuous for both children and adults.
⚠️ There are few places to eat along the way, so prepare plenty of food and water beforehand. Avoid letting children run and jump vigorously at high altitudes; rest more and shower less on the first day. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and lip balm are essential; the UV rays are stronger than you might imagine.
06 Chifeng | Inner Mongolia
Hashatu Stone Forest Tourist Area: The stones look like an alien base. Children can play for two hours exploring.
⏰ Go after 3 PM to avoid the sun.
📍 The trails within the scenic area are clear, but there are many forks in the road; follow the signs. The drive from Chifeng city to the stone forest is quite long; it's recommended to drive or charter a car, as public transportation is infrequent, and waiting for buses with children is exhausting.
⚠️ It's windy, tie your hat with the drawstring, or it'll fly away instantly. Some crevices in the stone formations are narrow, so adults need to watch the kids while they crawl through to prevent them from getting stuck. Signal strength on the grassland is inconsistent, so download offline maps beforehand for navigation.
🍜 Back in Chifeng city, we ate "duijia" (a type of sandwich), which the kids ate like a roujiamo (Chinese hamburger). The temperature difference between day and night on the grassland is significant, so pack a light down jacket. If you want to experience yurt accommodation, choose a reputable campsite and ask if there's a private bathroom; don't compromise if you're traveling with kids.
07 Xi'an|Shaanxi
Both the Terracotta Warriors and the Shaanxi History Museum require advance booking; don't force yourself to queue if you can't get a reservation. Pit 1 of the Terracotta Warriors doesn't have air conditioning; go in the morning in summer and leave around noon.
Kids can't reach the city walls by bike; taking the sightseeing bus is more convenient. The Qinling Mountains are suitable for older children to hike, while younger children can play in the water at the foot of the mountain.
📍 Walk from the Muslim Quarter towards Sajin Bridge; there will be half the crowds. For accommodation, choose a spot near the Bell Tower or Big Wild Goose Pagoda. The subway is convenient, and it's close to the fountain show with kids in the evening.
🍜 Break the paomo (pita bread soaked in mutton soup) into smaller pieces so kids can chew them easily. Kids generally enjoy roujiamo (meat sandwich) and liangpi (cold skin noodles). You can try Bingfeng soda for a change. Xi'an is hot in summer, so don't overschedule. A midday nap at the hotel is the most practical option.
⚠️ The Shaanxi History Museum is closed on Mondays. Tickets for both the Terracotta Warriors and the Shaanxi History Museum need to be booked several days in advance. Set an alarm; if you can't get tickets, try other museums instead. Don't just wait at the entrance.
08 Lu'an | Anhui
The waterfalls at Tiantangzhai have natural air conditioning. The spray is so refreshing that kids won't want to leave. However, the steps are slippery, so hold their hands tightly.
A boat ride on Wanfo Lake is comfortable. There's a small beach on the island where kids can spend ages digging in the sand.
⏰ Take a boat ride in the morning and relax in the shade by the lake in the afternoon.
📍 There are buses from Lu'an Station to the scenic area with fixed schedules; check the return trip in advance. For convenience, you can stay in a guesthouse in Tiantangzhai Town, which is close to the scenic area and avoids the morning rush.
⚠️ Mountain weather is unpredictable; raincoats are more useful than umbrellas. Steps become more slippery after wading through water, so dress your child in non-slip sandals, not flip-flops. It's recommended to buy Wanfo Lake boat tickets and Tiantangzhai entrance tickets online in advance; queuing on-site with a child is exhausting.
Of these 8 places, Baicheng and Lu'an are the most affordable for moms, Guoluo and Chifeng are the most photogenic, and Changsha and Xi'an offer great food but are physically demanding. Which of these places have you taken your child to? Share in the comments.
