The moment I reached the mountain, the cool air, misty forests, and peaceful atmosphere made me feel like I had temporarily escaped the busy world below. So if you only have one day, here’s the route I’d recommend. 🌲 1. The Highest Point of Thailand Start your morning at the highest point of Thailand. Walking along the wooden trail surrounded by moss-covered trees, mist and high-altitude forest was one of my favorite moments of the trip. The air feels completely different up here, cold, fresh and incredibly peaceful. There’s nothing complicated to do. Just slow down, breathe deeply, and enjoy the silence. Sometimes, that’s exactly what we need when travelling. 🛕 2. King & Queen Pagodas Next, head to the magnificent Phra Maha Dhatu Nabhamethanidol & Nabhapolbhumisiri, also known as the King and Queen Pagodas. The pagodas themselves are beautiful, but what impressed me even more was the scenery around them. Colorful flower gardens, mountain views and cool weather come together to create a place that feels almost unreal. Take your time here. Don’t just take a photo and leave. Look around. The view is part of the experience. 💦 3. Wachirathan Waterfall From the highlands, continue your journey toward Wachirathan Waterfall. You’ll hear the waterfall before you fully see it. The sound of the water crashing down, the cool mist touching your face and the lush green surroundings instantly make you feel refreshed. After spending time in the mountains, this was the kind of place where I naturally wanted to stop, breathe and simply enjoy the moment. 🏞️ 4. Mae Ya Waterfall Another place I wouldn’t skip is Mae Ya Waterfall. After a short walk from the parking area, you’ll eventually see the waterfall spreading across multiple layers of rocks. Compared with the powerful flow of Wachirathan, Mae Ya feels more open and peaceful. I could honestly sit here for a while just listening to the water. If you love nature photography, this is definitely one of the places worth keeping some extra time for. ☕ 5. Carp Cafe After walking around all day, it’s time for a little break. Carp Cafe is a fun place to stop for a cold coffee and relax beside its huge koi pond. The colorful fish swimming around the natural-style pond make the cafe surprisingly relaxing. You can even feed the fish while enjoying your drink. After a full day of mountains and waterfalls, this little coffee break felt like the perfect reset. 🙏 6. Wat Phra That Doi Kham Before ending the day, make your way back toward Chiang Mai and visit Wat Phra That Doi Kham. The temple is famous for the Luang Por Toon Jai Buddha image and is especially known among locals and visitors who come to make wishes. Chiang Mai has a much slower and more relaxed atmosphere. The local lifestyle feels calm and unhurried, so even if you don’t have much time, I would recommend slowing down and enjoying the city little by little. I didn’t have much time either, but this is how I spent 3 relaxing days in Chiang Mai. 👇 · -- 📍 Day 1 | Old City, Coffee & Night Bazaar I started my first day at Tha Phae Gate, one of Chiang Mai’s most recognizable landmarks. From there, I visited Wat Phra Singh, where I got to experience Chiang Mai’s traditional Lanna culture and beautiful temple architecture. After that, I recommend spending some time around the Ping River. There are several lovely cafés along the river where you can simply sit, have a coffee and watch the world go by. The café I visited was The Baristro Coffee Roaster. I really enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere there, and personally, I think it becomes even more beautiful and relaxing in the evening. ☕️🌙 At night, I headed to the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar to walk around, explore the local atmosphere and try some food. And of course, I couldn’t leave Chiang Mai without trying Khao Soi, the famous traditional noodle dish of Northern Thailand. 🍜 · -- 📍 Day 2 | Doi Suthep, Nature & Modern Chiang Mai On Day 2, I visited Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, one of Chiang Mai’s most famous landmarks. The mountain setting and views over Chiang Mai were definitely worth the trip. Later, I went to Pong Yaeng Ang Doi Restaurant, a beautiful place where you can sit beside a small stream and enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings. I tried Paulaner Hefe-Weißbier (Paulaner Weissbier) there. It was a little on the expensive side, but sitting beside the stream and enjoying the atmosphere made it a memorable experience for me. In the afternoon, I headed to MAYA Lifestyle Shopping Center for a completely different side of Chiang Mai, modern shopping, cafés and city life. · -- 📍 Day 3 | Mae Kampong & A Relaxing Finish For my final day, I left the city and headed to Mae Kampong Village. Surrounded by mountains and greenery, Mae Kampong felt completely different from the city. The peaceful village atmosphere was exactly what I needed for a slow final day. After returning to Chiang Mai, I had a Thai Massage. If you visit Chiang Mai, I definitely recommend trying a Thai massage at least once. After several days of walking and exploring, it’s a great way to relax before ending your trip. Here are a few places I’d definitely go back to. 1. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep If it’s your first time in Chiang Mai, I wouldn’t skip this one. The temple itself is beautiful, but the view over the city makes the trip up even better. I went around late afternoon and loved the atmosphere up there. 2. Chiang Mai Old City This is where I’d recommend spending at least half a day just walking around. There are temples everywhere, mixed with small cafés, local restaurants, shops, and quiet little streets. Wat Chedi Luang was probably my favorite temple in this area. 3. Doi Inthanon Definitely worth leaving the city for. The drive takes a while, but once you get into the mountains, Chiang Mai suddenly feels completely different. Cooler air, waterfalls, forest, and some seriously beautiful views. The pagodas were easily my favorite part. 4. Jing Jai Market I loved this place for a slow morning. Grab some coffee, walk around the little stalls, find something to eat, and just take your time. It feels much more relaxed than the big tourist markets. 5. One Nimman If you want something more modern, head to Nimman. One Nimman and the surrounding area are full of cafés, restaurants, shops, and places to hang out at night. It’s a nice change after spending the day visiting temples. 6. Sunday Walking Street This was probably one of my favorite evenings in Chiang Mai. The streets fill up with food stalls, handmade stuff, souvenirs, music, and people everywhere. Come hungry because there’s way too much food you’ll want to try. What I liked most about Chiang Mai was that I never felt like I had to rush. You can spend the morning exploring temples, escape to the mountains in the afternoon, then finish the day eating street food at a night market. Visiting the Pa Pong Piang Rice Terraces during the rainy "Green Season." We went in late August 2025, a time when the rice plants were growing and looking incredibly fresh and green. It rained at night, making the weather cool and comfortable. Waking up in the morning to see the sea of mist was absolutely spectacular! Getting to experience nature and take a deep breath of fresh air was truly healing for the soul. We stayed at Phi Thong Dee's House, right next to the road. It has a parking area right behind the house, so we didn't have to walk far at all—super convenient! The accommodation included both dinner and breakfast for just 700 baht per person. So worth it!

For this Chiang Mai trip, I recommend renting a car because it makes it easy to explore the city, Mon Jam, Mae Wang, and Doi Inthanon. Day 1, we picked up the car at the airport and started with coffee and carrot cake at Carrot Coffee Cake. The cake was so good and the cafe had a good-vibe feel. Then we had Khao Soi Lung Prakit before Doi Suthep, one of Chiang Mai’s most important temples, known for its golden chedi, sacred atmosphere, and city view. If you visit during cherry blossom season, continue to Khun Chang Khian for dreamy pink flowers. At night, we went to Lang Mor Night Market for food, including famous Chang Phueak suki, then stayed in the city. Day 2, we drove to Mon Jam. In the morning, we had pizza at Amataros, an Italian-style place with an outdoor zone, then stopped at North Gate Spirit Coffee. Lunch was at Pong Yaeng Ang Doi. In winter, many farms open strawberry fields where you can pick strawberries yourself. We stayed at Baan La Ong Fah 2 in Mon Jam. The road is steep, but the view is worth it. We checked in early, bought food, and ate in our room with the mountain view. Day 3, Hotel offer nice breakfast , we had breakfast with Sunrise view from our room. Then drove down for coffee at Sukhum Mae Rim, then visited Wat Luang Khun Win, a peaceful Lanna-style wooden temple in the mountains. You need to park at the community point and take a local car up because the road is steep, but the temple is beautiful. Then we had lunch at Baan Maew Suan Maew Mae Wang. The owner was lovely and there were more than 50 cats! We fed them, had lunch, and enjoyed the atmosphere. We continued to Kamoo Doi Inthanon, a new whole-house stay with two bedrooms, nature views, and helpful owners. Day 4, we woke up before sunrise to hike Kew Mae Pan. It was cold at first, then warmer as we walked. The trail takes around 2–3 hours, with mountain views and thousand-year roses. After that, we returned to the city, stopped at Blue Coffee at Agriculture CMU, bought Charin Pie’s popular coconut pie. Then visited Joogarood Cafe, a Japanese-style fox cafe with foxes, cats, and raccoons. You can feed them and also hold a fox under staff supervision. This was really impressive experience.
