I drove about 560 kilometers along the Yarlung Zangbo River in Tibet. For the other 15 kilometers that belong to the paid scenic area, I could only take a sightseeing bus, which cost a total of 240 yuan, of which 90 yuan was the sightseeing bus fee. The paid Yarlung Zangbo River Scenic Area is located in Pai Town, Milin County, Nyingchi Prefecture, and requires a sightseeing bus to visit. The sightseeing bus has 4 stops along the way, which I think is the most disappointing attraction. I was too lazy to take out my camera at these four stops. But Suosong Village on the north bank of the river is very beautiful when the peach blossoms are in full bloom, although I couldn’t see the entire Namjagbarwa Peak due to the weather. This attraction is included in the scenic area, but not included in the sightseeing bus route. This set of photos were all taken in Suosong Village. I believe that on a sunny day, it will be much more beautiful than it is now, and the peach blossoms will also set off Mount Namjagbarwa. Namchabarwa is the highest mountain in Nyingchi City, Tibet, peak at 7,782 meters, and has the title of Father of Tibetan Mountains. The body of Nanga Bawa is covered with snow all year round and the clouds are lingering. It never reveals its true face easily, so it is also called Shy Girl Mountain in Chinese. We were really lucky this time. In the evening, the mountain peaks were still clouded and misty. When the sun set at 8:07 pm in the evening, all the clouds and mist were dispersed. We even saw the magnificent sight of that the golden sun shines on the mountain. It is said that this mountain range is like a girl lying down, from right to left are her head, chest and feet. The best view point is in Suosong Village in the Yarlung Zangbo River Gorge. There is a milk tea shop in the village. We just drank milk tea and watched all the mountains exposed. The hotel faces Namcha Barwa Peak, and we were lucky enough to witness the sunrise over the mountain. Upon arrival, a butler greeted us and presented us with a khata (traditional Tibetan scarf). The drive from Nyingchi takes about two hours. The final section involves a winding mountain road, so an experienced driver is recommended. The scenery along the way is beautiful, gradually bringing us closer to the snow-capped mountains. Every room offers a view of the sunrise over the mountain. There's a fishpond below the room window. The weather has been unpredictable lately, so we wore down jackets in the mornings and evenings. We could only wear a sweater to take photos when the sun was stronger at midday. The hotel staff were incredibly friendly. They told us the best photo spots and even took photos for us – everyone looks like a photography master! There's a hiking area behind the hotel, but we didn't go because of the reported wild animal sightings and the cold weather. Dining: Breakfast, afternoon tea, and dinner were all at the Chinese restaurant. Hot pot was very warming in the slightly chilly weather. Milk was served as bedtime drink. The room was equipped with various tea sets and a kettle, and we mostly spent our time on the balcony drinking tea and gazing at the mountains.

Winter in Tibet has low oxygen levels which can easily cause altitude sickness, but many scenic spots are even more beautiful in winter. This time, I spent ten days in Lhasa and Nyingchi, seeing the Nam Co ice push, Nanga Parbat golden sunlight on the mountain, Laigu blue ice cave, and Yarlung ice wall. It was an incredibly stunning trip. Here’s a travel guide to share, suitable for solo travelers or groups. 1️⃣ Lhasa The main attractions in Lhasa city are the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street, and the Tibet Museum. Nearby highlights include Yamdrok Lake and Nam Co. Except for Barkhor Street, all city attractions require advance booking via a mini-program. Winter visits to the Potala Palace are free, while tickets for Jokhang Temple must be purchased on-site. It’s recommended to share a guide at the entrance for about 50 RMB per person. For Yamdrok Lake (P1-3) and Nam Co (P4-6), it’s best to join a day tour. Most tours on Trip.com have large groups, but we chose a small group of four people, which included complimentary camera and drone shooting, plenty of oxygen, and a flexible itinerary negotiated with the guide, avoiding unnecessary stops. The biggest surprise on the Yamdrok Lake tour was passing by a spot called Chayangtso (P7-9). We instantly agreed with the guide to check it out and saw a perfect ice surface—super fun and very photogenic. For Nam Co, we joined the same guide’s tour. After visiting the north shore, the guide drove us close to the lake to see the ice push (said to be similar to what you pay to see on the south shore), and we also captured the sunset and dry land onions—totally worth it. 2️⃣ Nyingchi Winter is the best time to see Nanga Parbat’s golden sunlight on the mountain (P10), Laigu Glacier (P11), and Yarlung Glacier (P12-14). Recently, you can even go on the ice. We also visited New Cuoba Songco but were very disappointed. 1. To see Nanga Parbat, it’s best to stay in Suosong Village and contact the homestay owner to help arrange carpooling. The fare from Nyingchi Station to the homestay is 100 RMB per person. Be sure to check the weather and forecast before going to ensure you can see the golden sunlight on the mountain. 2. If you want to visit Basongco, you can arrange carpooling from Suosong Village. A day trip from Suosong Village to Basongco, New Cuo, and Nyingchi Town costs about 550-650 RMB. The more people you share with, the cheaper it gets. 3. Laigu and Yarlung Glaciers require at least two days. On the first day, travel from Nyingchi to Ranwu Town by carpool for 200 RMB per person or by bus for 162 RMB per person. It takes about 7 hours to reach the Old Soldier Restaurant in Ranwu Town, where the owner can help arrange carpooling. On the second day, visit Yarlung and Laigu Glaciers. Be sure to tell the driver to go to Yarlung first, then Laigu. At the Yarlung scenic area, local villagers drive you up the mountain for 200 RMB per person. Afterward, they drive you to the shore of Laigu Glacier, so you don’t have to walk there yourself. The Laigu ticket costs 210 RMB per person. After finishing, you can return to Nyingchi by bus, carpool, or hitchhiking. Ask the Old Soldier Restaurant owner about bus and carpool options. Yarlung is highly recommended, while Laigu mainly features a blue ice cave that requires queuing for photos. Both are very photogenic. You can visit both for different scenery since you’re already there. 3️⃣ Some small tips 1. If you arrive directly in Lhasa, it’s best to use oxygen on the first day; otherwise, it’s really hard to sleep. 2. Monitor your blood oxygen levels at all times. Your oxygen might already be very low even if you only feel a little dizzy. At that point, you need to use oxygen. Always rely on your blood oxygen readings.

Hidden in the southeastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau lies a natural wonder that amazes the world—the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon. As the deepest and longest canyon on Earth, it not only impresses with its magnificent scale but also serves as a sacred site for scientific exploration and tourism due to its rich ecosystem and unique geological formations. I was fortunate to set foot on this mysterious land and personally experience its grandeur and charm. First Impressions of the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon: Awe and Reverence Starting from Paizhen in Milin County, Nyingchi City, and traveling along winding mountain roads, the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon gradually unfolds before your eyes. On both sides of the canyon, steep peaks shrouded in mist resemble a giant dragon winding across the land. Standing on the viewing platform, overlooking the bottomless canyon and listening to the roaring river, I felt my own insignificance and the vast majesty of nature. At that moment, my heart was filled with reverence for the natural world. Delving Deeper into the Canyon: Exploring Nature’s Mysteries Walking slowly along the trail beside the canyon, it felt like stepping into a moving painting. The Yarlung Tsangpo River rushes endlessly through the canyon, sometimes calm and mirror-like, sometimes turbulent and roaring, forming spectacular waterfalls and rapids. Under the sunlight, the river sparkles with golden light, harmonizing beautifully with the green mountains and clear waters on both sides, creating a stunning natural landscape. Deep within the canyon, I discovered many breathtaking natural sights. In some places, the river rushes through narrow channels, creating magnificent rapids and dangerous shoals; in others, it flows gently, forming beautiful sandbanks and wetlands. The canyon is also home to many rare animals and plants, such as Bengal tigers, stump-tailed macaques, big-eyed king cobras, as well as rare plants like Metok orchids and Himalayan yews. These biological resources enrich the canyon’s ecosystem and provide valuable data for scientific research and ecological protection. Namcha Barwa Peak: The Mysterious Veil of the “Shy Maiden” During my journey through the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, the most anticipated moment was to catch a glimpse of Namcha Barwa Peak. This 7,782-meter snow mountain, known as “China’s Most Beautiful Snow Mountain,” is covered in snow year-round and often shrouded in clouds, rarely revealing its true form. Legend says “nine out of ten people never see it fully,” requiring great luck to witness its complete appearance. However, on this trip, I was fortunate to see its majestic figure when the clouds parted. At that moment, Namcha Barwa shone with golden light under the sun, like a golden pagoda standing above the clouds. I stood quietly, filled with awe and gratitude toward nature. Canyon Culture: Harmonious Coexistence with the Tibetan People During my visit to the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, I also gained insight into the local Tibetan culture. The Tibetan people have lived on this land for generations, respecting nature and living in harmony with the canyon. Their villages are scattered around the canyon, with ancient houses and fluttering prayer flags adding a rich cultural touch to the magnificent natural scenery. Through conversations with the Tibetan people, I felt their love for life and reverence for nature. They told me that life is not a race but a form of enjoyment. This attitude deeply inspired and moved me. 1. Transportation Guide 1. Public Transport + Scenic Area Shuttle - Airplane: Fly to Nyingchi Milin Airport (about 50 km from the scenic area). From the airport, take the airport shuttle bus (30 RMB) to the city center, then transfer to the scenic area direct shuttle bus (40 RMB, 1.5 hours); or directly carpool to Paizhen, which is cost-effective and a good way to meet fellow travelers. - Train: Take the high-speed train from Lhasa Station to Nyingchi Station (3.5 hours, second-class seat 129 RMB), then transfer to the “Waterfall Bus” directly to Paizhen (40 RMB, 1 hour), suitable for travelers who prefer comfortable travel. 2. Self-driving/Charter - Self-driving: Drive 90 km (2 hours) along National Highway G318 from Nyingchi city to Paizhen. The entire route is paved but has many curves and steep slopes, requiring cautious driving. Scenic parking areas along the way allow for stops to enjoy the views. - Charter: Offers the highest flexibility, allowing customized itineraries and flexible stops at stunning spots along the way. Ideal for family trips or photography groups. It is recommended to choose a local driver familiar with the road conditions. 2. Core Attractions 1. Natural Wonders - Namcha Barwa Peak: Meaning “Spear Pointing Straight to the Sky” in Tibetan, it is revered as the “Father of the Mountains in Tibet” and one of China’s most beautiful peaks. The best viewing points are the viewing platforms at Suosong Village, and the Namcha Barwa viewing platform between Yidian and Gega villages. Sunrise or sunset offers the chance to see the golden mountain glow, with the highest chance to see the full peak in winter. - Suosong Village: One of “China’s Most Beautiful Villages,” located halfway up the northern bank of the Yarlung Tsangpo River, south of Namcha Barwa Peak and north of the river. It is an excellent spot for mountain and river views. The village is filled with Tibetan-style houses, rooftop viewing platforms, and a glass coffee shop where you can photograph the snow mountain reflections. At night, you can join bonfire parties and experience Tibetan songs and dances under the starry sky. - Dalin Village: Meaning “Happy Horse Ranch” in Tibetan, it retains its original village style, quieter and more authentic. In autumn, you may encounter villagers harvesting. Hiking to the riverbank offers unique views of the Buddha’s Palm Sand Dunes framed by snow mountains, perfect for visitors seeking tranquility. - Waterside Terrace and Gega Hot Springs: The waterside terrace is a place to rest and enjoy the scenery, and you can also experience the Gega Hot Springs fed by diverted water. Surrounded by mountains and water, the mineral-rich springs help relieve travel fatigue and have health benefits. 3. Food Recommendations Try Tibetan-style roasted beef and mutton, barley cakes, butter tea, and Menba ethnic yellow wine. Restaurants are available in the scenic area, Suosong Village, and Paizhen. When hiking, carry Tibetan-style dried meat for energy replenishment.
