Tremiti islands - the Arcipelago
The Arcipelago of Tremiti is an unbelievable place in the middle of the Adriatic sea in Italy.
It is Part of Gargano National Park.
The archipelago is composed of 5 islands: San Domino, San Nicola, Capraia, Cretaccio, and Pianosa.
People here use to say:
San Domino and San Nicola part of Tremiti paradise
Capraia, Cretaccio and Pianosa, three deserted Tremiti Islands
Here some quick points about each island:
San Domino, larger, with a beautiful coast, on which the main tourist structures are located also thanks to the presence of the only sandy beach of the archipelago (Cala delle Arene).
San Nicola, the main landing point, where the main monuments of the archipelago are located.
Capraia (also called Caprara or Capperaia), uninhabited, which offers fascinating coves.
Pianosa, a rocky plateau which is also completely uninhabited and about twenty kilometers away from the other islands.
The Tremiti Islands can be reached by ferry or helicopter. Depending on the time of year, it is possible to travel to the archipelago from Puglia (from the ports of Vieste, Rodi Garganico, Peschici, and Manfredonia) and from the port of Termoli in Molise.
This site is an important tourist attraction nowadays due to the clear and turquoise sea waters and its lush vegetation.
The islands were used as a penal colony since the Iron Age passing by Romans with Emperor Augustus who had exiled his granddaughter, Julia the Younger, to the Tremiti on charges of adultery, until the Fascist Regime when Mussolini had hundreds of homosexuals deported to the internment camp of San Domino, fortunately, closed after one year in 1939.
In spring and summer several ferries depart from the port of Vieste, with a journey time of approximately 2 hours. It is also possible to reach the Tremiti islands from Rodi Garganico (minor route) or even from the ports of Peschici and Manfredonia.
It is possible to buy tickets for the ferries to the Tremiti islands directly on this site, by entering the place and date of departure.
You literally fall in love with this arcipelago
