Marken travel guide and discussion

If you're tired of the city hustle and bustle, try taking a bus from Amsterdam to Marken, an ancient fishing village on an island peninsula. The village is very charming, with dark green and black wooden houses contrasting with their white windows. During spring, in addition to the shady walkways, wild white daisies bloom in patches along the paths, on the lawns in front of the houses, and in the open fields along the coast. The atmosphere, contrasting with the blue water and the cool sea breeze, gives you a truly authentic Dutch countryside feel. A recommended spot is to walk from the harbor to the Paard van Marken lighthouse. Along the way, you'll pass through fields of wildflowers and daisies growing naturally, resulting in very peaceful and serene photos. If you enjoy slow-paced living and vintage architecture, don't miss this place! 🌊🏡 #springflower

Volendam, Edam, and Marken might fly under the radar compared to Amsterdam or Rotterdam, but honestly, that’s their charm! If you want storybook Dutch scenes minus the crowds, this trio is a must. It’s perfect for crowd-avoiders and slow travelers. 🧳 Edam and Marken especially felt wonderfully peaceful with barely a tourist in sight. My personal MVP? Marken! 🏆I fell for the farm animals grazing by picturesque harbors, one-of-a-kind wooden cottages, and that serene vibe by the water. 🦢 🌊 Top Spots to Visit: · Volendam: Stroll around the harbour, sample some local cheese, and check out the quirky Volendam Museum (Zeestraat 41, open 10:00–17:00). 🧀 ⛵️ · Edam: Wander pretty streets near Damplein, see the famous carillon at Grote Kerk Edam (Grote Kerkstraat, open Tue–Sat), and snack on Edammer cheese at a waterside café. 🏞️ · Marken: Arrive by bus or ferry, then roam past colorful wooden houses and the peaceful harbor (Havenbuurt). Don’t miss spotting friendly animals and soaking in the chilled-out, almost unreal scenery. 🐄🏡 Getting Around: Snap up an Amsterdam Region Travel Ticket (ARTT) – it covers local buses needed to reach these destinations, so you can hop town to town hassle-free. Honestly, this made everything SO simple (and cheaper). You can also take the ferry. ⛴️ 🚎 💡Last but not least: · Sunny weather made everything stunning – if you can, shoot for a clear day. 🌞 Hashtags: #NetherlandsHiddenGems #TravelTips #MarkenMagic #Volendam #Edam

Both Voldenham and Marken are offered as. aday trip from Amsterdam. During my lengthy stay and since I had a accomodaitons set in Utrecht at a friend's place. I did a lot of day trips from there. Thus ofcourse would have been closer form Amsterdam. But I saved much more on accomodaiton than the travel cost difference. My train journeys in Netherlands have been very comfortable. So I figured out my transport options and chose trains over buses. The plan was to ride a train to Volendam, explore and then get a boat to marken. It worked out perfectly well. Marken is a cute fishing village. It has a boutique sort of colorful appearance. Like with me, most people come here for the laid back atmosphere. There is no long list of things to see. But it's more about strolling seeing this beautiful village, it's canals, gardens, the church and port. You've got some places go eat as well. Perfectly suited for that half day from volendam. #myhiddengems #netherlands #marken #europe #summerdestinations #100waysoftravel #cherryblossom2024

The little village of Marken is known for being one of the prettiest spots in the Netherlands, particularly thanks to its strategic location on the Ijsselmeer Lake. Crowds of visitors flock to the town every year to take in its picture-postcard worthy attractions such as traditional painted wooden houses as well as fishing boats. In the summer months there are festivals held here where the residents dress in period garb and you can see traditional crafts like clog making taking place. #hoteldeals#summertrip#gourmetsummer#exhibition2021

Marken: An ancient wooden village and Dutch fishing village lifestyle 🇳🇱 Island If you want a change of pace from Amsterdam and a peaceful town that still retains the charm of traditional Dutch history, Marken is a must-visit. This town was originally an isolated island in the Zuiderzee before the construction of a highway connecting it to the mainland, allowing it to perfectly preserve its unique culture and architecture.

This is the birthplace of the world-renowned Edam Cheese (the round, red wax-coated cheese). Compared to its bustling, commercialized neighbor, the tourist fishing village of Volendam, Edam preserves a much purer medieval tranquility. It features a fascinating maze of ancient canals, elegant white wooden arch bridges, and 17th-century cheese warehouses. ✨ Must-Visit Core Attractions: Summer-Exclusive Cheese Market (Kaasmarkt): If you visit on a Wednesday morning in July or August, you can witness the spectacular, traditional cheese trading reenactment, complete with cheese being transported by boat. Edam Weigh House (Kaaswaag): An 18th-century historic cheese weighing house that now serves as a cheese museum, where you can enjoy cheese tasting. White Bell Tower (Carillon Tower): Built in the 14th century, this tower chimes with a crisp and melodious ring at the top of every hour. ✨ Day Trip Transportation & Tips: How to get there: Take EBS Bus 314 from the bus station behind Amsterdam Central Station. The direct ride to Edam takes about 30 minutes. Suggested itinerary: We recommend buying the "Waterland Ticket" (a one-day bus pass for the Waterland region). This allows you to combine Edam ➔ Volendam ➔ Marken into a classic day trip route.

Marken: Fields of yellow mustard flowers contrasting with the green wooden village 🇳🇱💛 Besides the wildflowers along the roadside, the highlight of the ancient village of Marken in spring is the fields of bright yellow wild mustard (rapeseed) flowers that bloom profusely along the coast and around the island. The stunning aspect of this spot is the bright yellow of the flower fields contrasting with the dark green of the old Dutch-style wooden houses, with a backdrop of a clear blue sky, windmills, or the water of Lake Markermeer. The resulting photos have a fantastic mood, giving off a cozy and refreshing Dutch countryside vibe. #springflower

#earthdayjourney Just a short bike ride and ferry from Amsterdam, the tiny village of Marken feels like a step into a living postcard—wooden greenhouse, narrow lanes, and locals who still wear traditional clothing on special occasions. But what makes Marken truly special isn’t just its charm—it’s how it quietly champions sustainability through simplicity. Marken invites you to slow down. Cars are few, and most visitors explore on foot or by bike. The village, once a true island before being connected by causeway, maintains a strong bond with nature—its stilted houses designed to coexist with the changing tides and winds of the Zuiderzee. Here, you’ll find fresh seafood straight from the source, crafts made by hand, and a lifestyle that whispers: less really is more. Sustainable travel isn’t always about grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s about choosing destinations that live in harmony with their environment. Marken is one of them—and it’s worth every peaceful, wind-swept moment. #travel #amsterdam #marken #sustainabilitytravel #vacation

Getting There - We flew from Glasgow found it very easy to get the train to the city and it was extremely cheap €4-6 ! So much so we spent half of our stop over home , back in the city centre, no hassle and no rush. We did meet a couple who grabbed a taco from the airport and it cost them €180 😱 they were dropped at the central train station Attractions - chocolate factory, cheese shops Hotels - This hostel was modern , room very cramped it’s just for sleep. We did find it rather stuffy but well worth the money. Toilets were shared but spotless Food & Restaurants - lost my appetite after my cake and it was only one night so we skipped dinner but I have been previously and the steam is to die for Shopping - expensive

Exploring Marken, a charming fishing village in Amsterdam, is a step back in time, and a perfect example of sustainable travel. As I strolled along its cobblestone streets, I was captivated by the traditional wooden houses, colorful boats, and lush landscapes that preserve the village's heritage. The area is dedicated to maintaining its cultural charm while promoting eco-friendly tourism. One of the highlights of my visit was indulging in locally produced cheese, a delicious product of Marken's sustainable farming practices. I visited a nearby farm where they make their cheese with minimal environmental impact, supporting local agriculture and reducing carbon footprints. The rich flavors of the cheese reflected the care and attention given to preserving both the land and its traditions. Walking through Marken not only allowed me to enjoy its timeless beauty but also underscored the importance of responsible travel. Supporting local businesses, like the cheese producers, and embracing eco-friendly practices can help ensure that places like Marken remain preserved for future generations to experience. It’s a destination where sustainability meets tradition in the most delicious way. #earthdayjourney #SustainableTravel #ExploreMarken #EcoFriendlyAdventures #LocalCheese #GreenTravel #CulturalHeritage #AmsterdamVillages #TravelResponsibly #SustainableTourism #PreserveThePlanet
