In this historic riverside settlement where Miao and Han cultures intertwine, we aimed to forge the courage to push past our limits by exploring an unfamiliar environment. Nanmuqiao Ancient Village was founded during the Ming Dynasty and sits along an old trade route on a tributary of the Chenshui River, where Miao and Han ancestors lived together for generations. Wooden and brick houses cascade along the riverbanks, and a millennium-old stone arch bridge—the Nanmu Bridge—spans the stream. Ancient docks and flagstone paths still remain, perfectly preserving authentic local customs like Miao batik and traditional folk songs. The river valley is lush with greenery, and the streams run crystal clear. With very few tourists around, the area retains its pristine, rustic charm. We decided to skip the standard tourist routes and venture out on our own to explore the mountain trails and riverside paths within the village. Runya Township in Yongshun County is located by the Lishui River, neighboring Luotaping Township of Zhangjiajie and facing Maoyanhe Town (Wentang) of Zhangjiajie across the river. The area of Runya Township features karst landforms and is rich in hot spring resources, with several lesser-known attractions worth visiting. I have been to a few of them and will briefly document my experiences. 1. Huolongshan Hot Spring. Huolongshan Hot Spring is situated by the Lishui River. Steam rises as the spring water gushes from the source. Local villagers have built a few simple open-air pools right at the spring and erected partition walls for bathing. The first pool is for men, followed by a pool for women. Next to the open-air hot spring is the Mayang Ancient Ferry, and an independent hill by the Lishui River bank where Huolongshan Hot Spring is located. On the opposite bank is the starting dock for the Maoyanhe Rafting in Wentang, Zhangjiajie. Although Huolongshan is quite rustic, for many years, many people from downtown Zhangjiajie would drive to Wentang in winter, then take a boat from Mayang Ancient Ferry across the Lishui River to soak in Huolongshan Hot Spring. In recent years, a high-end hot spring resort has been built on the Wentang side, so tourists no longer visit Huolongshan Hot Spring across the river, which now seems to be inactive. Despite Huolongshan’s water quality being better than that of Wentang, without major capital investment, the hot spring here will remain just wild open pools. Of course, if the hot springs on both sides of the Lishui River were operated by the same company, it might be better. 2. Mayang Ancient Ferry. Next to Huolongshan Hot Spring is the Mayang Ancient Ferry (named after the nearby Mayang Village). The ferry still transports local villagers. The influential film "Border Town" from over 40 years ago, featuring Cuicui and her ferry scenes, was filmed here. Today, apart from the blue stone-paved road near Huolongshan, no other traces of the ancient ferry remain. 3. Chexi Dragon Cave. The Dragon Cave is not far from the Runya Township government, located on a cliff halfway up the Chexi Gorge. This area is karst terrain, locally known as the Chexi Dragon Cave Scenic Area. Main attractions include: Dragon Cave, Thorn Pig Cave (Hedgehog Cave), Immortal Cave, Floating Water Cave, Immortal Rock, Seven Connected Caves, Suojing Pool, Sulfur Cave, Maiden Cave, and more. Locals once used Dragon Cave and Immortal Cave as bases to resist bandits and erected a monument inside the cave to honor 20 heroes who defended the village. In 2019, villagers raised over 200,000 yuan to build a simple road and a trail to the Dragon Cave, but due to insufficient funds, poor transportation, and many similar attractions nearby, the scenic area’s development remains a hopeful vision of the villagers. Except for the Dragon Cave trail (which is overgrown with weeds), other attractions remain in their natural state and are difficult for ordinary tourists to find. 4. Fenggou (also called Fenghuanggou) in Fengming Village. A stream flows through a karst cave here, with a small dam built at the cave’s exit, making it a great spot for water play in summer. These are the few hidden spots in Runya I have visited so far. I will update if I visit more. The photos were taken multiple times, the earliest dating back to 2008.

I had originally planned to go to Shenzhen, but something delayed my trip, so I ended up in Mayang. The city is truly beautiful, with green belts, well-mannered pedestrians, and excellent transportation. I highly recommend Mayang. If you visit, you should definitely try its delicious food.
