North Africa Morocco Tunisia Tour (10) "Black Imperial City" - Meknes Meknes - Fez December 15, 2024 Sunny to cloudy, 4-18°C. After lunch, we went to Meknes for a visit. Meknes, the ancient capital of the Alaouite dynasty, is one of the four imperial cities of Morocco and the sixth largest city in Morocco. It is located on the northern slope of the Middle Atlas Mountains and was built in the 11th century. It reached its peak in the 17th and 18th centuries and was once the capital. It is a holy place of Islam and an important industrial and commercial center. The area also preserves many historical sites such as Roman relics. Meknes is called the Black City because the powerful army established by the ruler at that time was composed entirely of black slaves, so it was called the Black Imperial City. The Mansour Gate, which means victory and triumph, is under repair and is not shown in the photo. The legendary emperor Ismail was not only a powerful ruler, but also a prolific father. He had more than 500 wives and concubines of different skin colors, regions, and temperaments, and gave birth to 525 sons and 342 daughters. To this day, no one in the world can match him. The Mausoleum of Ismail is located inside the Mansour Gate (Figure 1), and the carriages used for sightseeing come and go (Figure 2). The mausoleum building, similar to an Islamic mosque, is imposing (Figure 3), and the interior decoration is exquisite and luxurious. The most impressive things are the floor, walls, and dome. Mosaic decorations in various patterns are everywhere, and the colors are bright and dazzling (Figures 4-9). The clothes and crowns of Ismail, his wife, and two daughters are placed in the building. With his death, the entire imperial city fell into ruins and did not prosper until the 20th century. After the visit, we drove for an hour to our eighth stop - Fez.

It was a coincidence that Sultan Moulay Ismail and King Louis XIV of France built a city in the wilderness at the same time. The former was located on a wooded hill about 70 km west of Fes, now known as Meknes, and the latter was the famous Palace of Versailles. From 1680 to 1693, the two dynasties maintained friendly relations. Later, the relationship between the two countries broke down when France refused to return the Moorish prisoners. Moulay Ismail's 54-year reign and extraordinary achievements made him a legendary figure. Early in his reign, he was very fond of Meknes and dreamed of building a city there that would be more magnificent than Fes and Marrakech. Meknes, as described by the Sultan's chronicler, was like this: "…20 strong gates were built on the city walls, with platforms for cannons on top. Inside the city, he built a huge artificial lake where people could row boats. There was a granary in the city, with huge underground reservoirs, and a stable three miles long for the Sultan to house his horses and mules, which could accommodate 12,000 horses. The ground under the arches was used to store grain for feeding the horses… He also built the Palace of Mansour, which had 20 domes, each of which overlooked the plains and mountains surrounding Meknes. Around the stables were all kinds of rare trees, and there were 50 palaces within the city walls, each with its own mosque and bathhouse…." Unfortunately, today's visitors to Meknes can hardly feel the splendor of the past!

#celebratewithtrip Restaurant Palais Ismailia is located at N°6 Bab Belkari Moulay Ismail, Meknes 50060, Morocco. It is open daily from 1030-2000, and is around 30 kilometers 38 minutes from Volubilis. These are the few restaurants that the tour group buses that will bring you. The restaurant had a rooftop sitting and the staff were very friendly, they will explain the food details to you, but the prices are slightly expensive. I had ordered the Pastilla set, which includes Moroccan salad, soup, pastilla, and dessert. Pastilla is a North Africa meat or seafood pie made with warqa dough, it is a specialty of Morocco and Algeria. The pastilla served tasted sweet, because of the white sugar powder, the meat inside is juicy.

The next day brought even more wonders, including awe-inspiring desert landscapes and an emotional visit to a Berber village. We were greeted as honored guests by people with little more than a tent and some goats. Later, we explored local mines and took an exhilarating ride along the sand dunes at sunset on quad bikes. That evening we stayed at a stunning riad with a pool. Our journey continued through the Todra and Dades Valleys, surrounded by breathtaking scenery and locations featured in numerous films. The final leg took us to Marrakesh and its surroundings, ending our incredible tour with a few relaxing days in Essaouira. Special thanks go to Hassan, our youthful yet professional and caring guide.
