DAI ETHNIC VILLAGE. Immediately after a walk through the Royal Naku Academy Botanical Garden in Xishuangbanna, we boarded a yellow tourist bus, paying 20 yuan each. A staff member approached us and asked if we wanted to go to Dai village or straight to the city... Of course, we agreed to go to the Dai village. Location: "Living Museum" - Mengjinglai Village. This is perhaps the most famous Dai border village, known as the "First Village on the Border." It is in Menghai County, Xishuangbanna, separated from the Myanmar border by the Mekong River. Here you'll see traditional stilt houses where people still weave, make sugar, and make clay. Be sure to look for border pillar #229 – from here you can see the Myanmar village on the other side. The ideal time to visit is from November to April, when there's no rainy season. After paying 210 yuan for two for entrance and transportation between locations, we found ourselves in an ethnic village with actual Dai people who live there and work for the tourism industry. Here, we were treated to the most delicious chicken 🐔 cooked over a fire and Laotian milk tea... We were shown the "Water Splashes 🌊" water festival, taken to the Myanmar border, and shown an incredibly beautiful temple! Important warning: bring your passport. This is a border zone, and as the only foreigners, we were subjected to strict document and visa checks. Even though we arrived at this village unplanned, we were incredibly impressed. We could have taken a boat ride along the Lancang (Mekong) River, but a tropical downpour started and we had to head home for our free hotel photo shoot...
