Mgarr travel guide and discussion

Mgarr is a small sea town of the Maltese republic located in the island of #gozo . Gozo is certainly different place than Malta. The ferry from the main island in the country stops right here in Mgarr so it is definitely impossible to miss this place on your way to the good beaches of the island. The place is very beautiful and I enjoyed it. #happynewyear

Why Malta, and why NOW? Malta just became Europe’s fastest-growing tourism destination of 2026. Between January and August, the island welcomed a record 3,160,974 inbound tourists — a 17.9% jump over the same period last year, with August alone bringing 539,655 visitors . Yet here’s what the algorithm won’t tell you: most visitors stay in Sliema or St Julian’s, see Valletta and the Blue Lagoon, and leave. They miss the wild western cliffs, the hidden fjords of Gozo, and the €0.50 pastizzi where Malta actually breathes. This guide is built for the traveler who wants real value. Save it. You’ll use it. 🚌 TRANSPORT: The €2 Bus That Beats Every Taxi The mistake starts at Malta International Airport. Taxis quote €20–30 to Valletta or Sliema. The Malta Public Transport bus costs a fraction of that — a single journey is €2.50 in summer (June to mid-October) and €2.00 in winter, valid for 2 hours with free transfers . The Explore Card gives you 7 days of unlimited travel for €25, and the 12 Single Day Journeys card costs €19 and can be shared between travellers . The Gozo ferry rule. The Gozo Channel ferry connects Malta to Gozo in 25 minutes and runs every 45 minutes. Foot passengers travel free — you only pay when returning. The bus from Valletta to Ċirkewwa (the ferry terminal) takes about 1 hour, and the ferry drops you at Mġarr, where buses connect to Victoria and the rest of Gozo. The one thing to know: Malta drives on the left. Roads are narrow, winding, and often congested. For solo travelers, buses are the move. For groups of two or more, a rental car splits the cost and unlocks the hidden corners — but parking in Valletta is a nightmare. 🍲 FOOD: The €0.50 Pastizzi That Beats Every Restaurant Maltese food is not fancy. It’s pastizzi — flaky, diamond-shaped pastries filled with ricotta cheese (tal-irkotta) or mushy peas (tal-piżelli), sold from every pastizzeria for €0.50–1 each . It’s ftira — a crusty Maltese sandwich with tuna, olives, and capers. And it’s rabbit stew (fenkata) — the national dish, slow-cooked in wine and garlic, served with spaghetti or fries. The pastizzeria rule. A pastizzi costs €0.50–0.80 from any pastizzeria — the older and more unassuming, the better. Crystal Palace in Rabat has been serving them since 1956, 24 hours a day, for €0.50 each . A ftira runs €5–8. A rabbit stew at a local restaurant costs €12–18. Look for the pastizzeria with the longest line of locals in work clothes. That’s the one. Must-try, ranked: · Pastizzi — the everyday staple. €0.50–0.80 each. · Ftira — the Maltese sandwich. €5–8. · Fenkata (rabbit stew) — the national dish. €12–18. · Ħobż biż-żejt — Maltese bread with tomato, oil, and tuna. €4–6. · Kinnie — the bitter orange soda that Maltese people love. €1.50–2.50. The Cisk rule. Cisk is Malta’s national beer. At a local bar, a bottle costs €2.50–3.50. At a tourist bar in St Julian’s, expect €5–7. Drink it cold, like the locals do. 🗺️ HIDDEN MALTA: 3 Places Tourists Miss 1. Fomm ir-Riħ (Western Coast) — The wild west coast of Malta, where cliffs drop dramatically into the sea and the landscape feels like another island entirely. The name means “mouth of the wind”, and you’ll understand why the moment you arrive. The hike down to the narrow pebble beach takes about 20 minutes — bring sturdy shoes and water, as there are no facilities . No tour buses. No entrance fee. 2. Wied il-Għasri (Gozo) — A hidden fjord-like inlet on Gozo’s northern coast, carved by water and wind into a narrow, dramatic canyon that opens onto the sea. The water is turquoise, the walls are limestone, and the silence is total. The narrow inlet keeps the water incredibly calm, making it a dream for snorkeling . Go early in the morning. You’ll likely have it to yourself. 3. Coral Lagoon (Mellieħa) — Known locally as the “Dragon’s Eye”, this is a natural rock pool formed by a collapsed sea cave, connected to the open sea by a narrow tunnel. It’s less crowded, deeper, and perfect for snorkeling or cliff diving than the famous Blue Lagoon . Access is by boat or a hike along the cliffs. No facilities. No entrance fee. Just wild Gozo. Honorable mention: Palazzo Parisio (Naxxar) — a stunning 19th-century palace with opulent interiors and gorgeous formal gardens, right in the main square of a traditional hilltop town that most tourists never visit . 💰 BUDGET REALITY CHECK Malta is moderate for the Mediterranean — cheaper than Italy or France, but not as cheap as Greece or Portugal. · Budget traveler: $70 (€60) per day — hostel dorms, pastizzi, Tallinja bus card . · Mid-range traveler: $161 (€138) per day — private rooms, restaurant meals, occasional taxis . · Pastizzi: €0.50–0.80 each. · Ftira: €5–8. · Rabbit stew (fenkata): €12–18. · Cisk beer (local bar): €2.50–3.50. · Single bus journey (summer): €2.50. · 7-day unlimited bus pass (Explore Card): €25. · Hostel dorm: €15–25 per night. · Guesthouse (private room): €40–70 per night. Realistic daily budget: €60–138 depending on your style. Budget travelers can stay under €70 with hostels, pastizzi, and the Tallinja card. Mid-range travelers spend around €120 with private rooms and occasional restaurant meals. 🙏 ETIQUETTE: 5 Unspoken Rules That Matter Malta runs on warmth, formality, and a deep sense of Catholic tradition. These aren’t tourist rules — they’re how the country works. 1. Greet with a handshake and “Bonġu.” A handshake is the standard greeting for first meetings. Say “Bonġu” (good morning) or “Grazzi” (thank you) — locals appreciate even a basic attempt at Maltese. Between friends, a kiss on each cheek is common. 2. Dress modestly at churches. Malta is a devoutly Catholic country. Cover your shoulders and knees when entering St John’s Co-Cathedral or any church. No beachwear in towns, villages, or religious sites. 3. Don’t be loud. Maltese culture values reserved and courteous behavior. Raised voices in public, on buses, or in restaurants are considered rude. 4. Punctuality matters. Malta is punctual — arriving late for a meeting, a tour, or a dinner reservation is considered disrespectful. If you’re going to be late, call ahead. 5. Tipping is appreciated, not mandatory. In restaurants, 5–10% is standard for good service if not already included. For taxis, round up. For tour guides, €5–10 per person per day. 💾 SAVE THIS POST IF: · You’re planning Malta in 2026 — it’s Europe’s fastest-growing destination, up 18% year-on-year. · You want to eat pastizzi for €0.50 and swim in the Coral Lagoon before the crowds find it. · You believe the best travel intel comes from real experience, not recycled top-10 lists. #falladventures #travel #seascapes #naturalwonders #beachlife Great service. Worth the visit when in Malta. We visited the place by car and it wasn’t difficult to locate. Get busier during lunch time but there’s QR code to reserve a table. It’s a perfect spot to unwind while watching the sunset. It’s a hidden gem. Restaurant very nice, very well decorated, with an incredible view since positioned a little high in relation to the beach. The cocktails and dishes are good. We had a great time, so much so that we went back 2 days in a row. The staff is nice and some speak French. Dishes a little expensive, but we gladly pay a little more for the setting. In short, we highly recommend!

#falladventures #travel Incredible beach! Loved it. Stunning location, beautiful water, gentle slope into the sea, stays shallow for a while, great snorkelling with plenty of fish. Rocks and sand to sit on. Sunbeds and brollys available for €5 each. Watersports available if required but done way out to sea so it does not detract from the serenity of the location. Great hiking around the bay, beautiful views. Great parking and a bus stop. Lovely reasonable bar n grill onsite with great choices and good food served. The shop sells snorkelling kit and you can hire kayaks and a boat. Highly recommend this beach. Really quiet and away from the crowds of Golden Bay and St Pauls. Loved it. Will be back.

#falladventures #familytravel #naturalwonders #travel We visited Ghajn Tuffieha on our last day in Malta for about 4 hours. It is incredibly easy to access, with good bus routes (we arrived via Uber, and that was convenient as well). The water is incredibly shallow in many parts but is deeper further out and towards the left/cliffside of the bay. We didn’t bring snorkelling gear but saw many small fish anyway because the water is crystal clear and beautiful. The sand is soft, a unique amber colour, and the water is (in my opinion) the perfect temperature for cooling off in the summer. Very calm, too. There are also many small trails around the bay and cliff which we didn’t try but looked reasonably easy and with amazing viewpoints. Whilst Ghajin Tuffieha makes for a brilliant family beach, most of its visitors were young people, backpackers, and couples, with many locals - therefore there is something for everyone :). The restaurant is very nice with amazing staff and a cool vibe - it can get busy and service was somewhat slow but understandably so. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available for hire and can be placed wherever you like, although bringing your own would save both time and money. There are few downsides to this beach but it largely depends on personal preference. There is a slight plastic problem, particularly to the left of the bay where we were situated. As far as we could tell, no sharps/cans/glass or anything dangerous but definitely some single-use plastic packaging and cigarettes which obviously ruins the appeal. The water wasn’t impacted much by the litter but offers its own issues - lots of seaweed (I didn’t mind, but may irritate snorkellers), and a few boulders that are hard to see in the bright sunlight. It is very easy to stub your toe so all I’d say is be careful!!!. The restaurant had limited food options (but a really good cocktail menu). I’d also recommend arriving early - we arrived at 3pm and the main beach was packed, forcing us into a narrower, slightly more polluted strip. At 6 the crowds died down significantly and the beach was even more beautiful. Another tip would be to spend time hopping between the bays either side of Ghajin Tuffieha - you could easily spend 1-2 days within 600m of the coastline due to the many different bays, some of them more secluded than this one. Ultimately this was the best beach I visited on the main island of Malta. Perfect, almost hippie vibe, golden sand, crystal clear water.

A hike along the coast between Riviera Bay and Gnejna Bay in autumn offers some of Malta’s most breathtaking scenery. The summer heat has softened into a gentle warmth, and the air carries a crisp hint of sea breeze. The coastal path winds along golden cliffs and terraced hills, with views stretching over the deep blue Mediterranean. Wild herbs and hardy shrubs release their scent as you walk, and the quiet landscape feels peaceful after the busy summer months. The descent toward Gnejna reveals its tranquil bay framed by rugged rock formations—a perfect reward for a serene autumn hike. #falladventures

#hellohalloween Malta does sunsets like few places on Earth — the sky turns flaming orange and the limestone coastline glows gold. Waves crash, boats drift by, and everything slows down for a moment. I loved sitting barefoot in the sand with the warm wind blowing, watching the sun sink into the Mediterranean. The sea reflects every color — from peach to deep purple. Photos can’t quite capture how it feels, but wow… it’s unforgettable. 🌊💛 📍 Best Spots to Catch the Magic · Golden Bay – wide beach, perfect glow over the horizon · Għajn Tuffieħa – romantic cliff path + postcard views · Mellieħa Bay – calm water & family-friendly evenings · St. Peter’s Pool – waves & rock formations in silhouette · Dingli Cliffs – dramatic drop with the sun on the open sea ✨ Best Time Arrive 45 minutes before sunset — the colors change fast and the golden hour gives Malta its most magical light. Whether you're with someone special or just soaking up the moment on your own — sunset at the beach in Malta is pure peace.

#hellohalloween If you think Malta is only busy beaches and sun loungers — think again. Some of the island’s most magical coastlines are the quiet ones, hidden between rocky cliffs or tucked behind fishing villages. And honestly? Those were the places where I felt the island’s soul the most. 🌅 I loved wandering along the coast and suddenly finding a tiny cove with just a couple of locals reading or swimming. Clear water, golden stone, the sound of waves echoing against the rock… pure therapy. 🏖️💙 📍 Where to find that peaceful seaside feeling · St. Peter’s Pool early morning — fossils & natural rock pools · Fomm ir-Riħ — dramatic views worth the hike · Għar Lapsi — village charm + stunning snorkeling · Small coves around Marsaskala and Xlendi — quiet local life 🚍 Getting there Most require a bit of a walk or a bus ride from Valletta — but the harder they are to reach, the quieter they stay 😌 ✨ Personal favorite Watching the sun melt into the horizon with just the waves for company… no crowds, no rush. Those are the Malta moments that stay with you.

#hellohalloween Malta isn’t just calm blue lagoons — its coastline shows a wilder side too. At places like Dingli Cliffs, Għajn Tuffieħa, and northwestern Gozo, the waves crash dramatically against limestone rocks, sending spray high into the air and filling the senses with the raw power of the Mediterranean. 🌪️🌊 I stood on the edge, feeling the wind whip past, hearing the relentless roar of the sea below, and it was impossible not to feel alive. These moments reveal a different Malta — untamed, dramatic, and utterly breathtaking. 📍 Best spots: Dingli Cliffs, Għajn Tuffieħa, Sanap Cliffs (Gozo) 🕒 Tip: Visit in late afternoon for golden light and a dynamic seascape — sturdy shoes recommended! Malta’s rough waves remind you that even a small island can hold infinite power and beauty. ⚡💙

📍 A full day of sun at Riviera Beach and the historic charm of Valletta. Don't miss the cannon shot at noon, authentic pinsa at Sotto Pinsa, and jazz on the steps of The Bridge Bar. A perfect blend of relaxation and culture! 🏖️ Valletta, Riviera beach 🚇 Bus and taxi 🍜 Italian cuisine and local rabbit 🏠 Closer to beaches (Northern part of the island) and Sliema for activities

📍Golden Bay Malta offers numerous hiking trails, and this time I ventured to a small hill beyond the beach at Golden Bay. While some might associate hiking with tiring walks and feel reluctant, this particular trail is not overly challenging. As you ascend the hiking path, you’re treated to stunning views of the sea, and during sunset, you can witness a breathtaking view of the sun setting. The rocky surfaces illuminated by the evening sun glow in a beautiful orange hue, making the hike feel effortless! The trail is quite rugged, so I highly recommend wearing sneakers! 👟
