Everywhere you look there are honey-colored limestone houses, terraces, arches, narrow stairways and beautifully carved stone details. I had never seen a city with this kind of architecture or layout — not in Turkey and not anywhere else I had visited. But the biggest surprise came when I climbed up to a rooftop and looked beyond the city. Suddenly, I was looking across Mesopotamia — a name I had known all my life from history books. I had read about ancient civilizations and cities in this region, but I had never imagined what it would feel like to actually stand there and see that landscape with my own eyes. That contrast really stayed with me: behind me was this incredibly old, layered stone city, and in front of me was the vast landscape where so much ancient history happened. It felt completely different from simply visiting another historic city. 💙 My recommendations for Mardin: 1. Visit Deyrulzafaran Monastery. This ancient Syriac Orthodox monastery is just outside Mardin and is one of the most important Christian heritage sites in the region. 2. If you have time, go further toward Midyat and visit Mor Gabriel Monastery. Founded in 397 AD, it is one of the oldest surviving Syriac Orthodox monasteries in the world and sits in the historic Tur Abdin region, close to the Syrian border. 3. Try the local Mardin cuisine. Look for kaburga dolması (stuffed lamb ribs), sembusek, ikbebet, and dobo. Mardin’s food has strong Syriac, Arab and regional influences, so it tastes quite different from the Turkish food you may know from Istanbul or Antalya. Mardin surprised me because I didn’t expect to find a city that looked so completely different from the Turkey I thought I knew — and I definitely didn’t expect to stand above the Mesopotamian plains and realize that the place I had only read about in history books was suddenly right in front of me. ✨
