Even if I would personally recommend to spend more than one day in this incredibly beautiful Italian city, often compared to Paris for its elegance and architecture, your visit can also be the perfect easy day trip from Milan, to enjoy and admire another stunning destination while having limited time in the country! Spend one day in Turin, the first capital of Italy, rich in culture, history and beauty, just a short train or bus ride away from Milan! After reaching Porta nuova station, walk along Via Roma, the main shopping street in town and enjoy the buildings, squares and fountains along it before starting your day visit in Piazza Castello, the heart of the city, its main square, where the royal palace is located, to see the stunning baroque architecture. Walk to the nearby Palatine Gate to view almost perfectly preserved Roman ruins. Head inside the Royal Palace of Turin and/or step into the adjacent Turin Cathedral to view the home of the Holy Shroud (the relic itself is not on display), note that the royal palace gardens are free to access!! Stop for a morning coffee at a historic spot like Caffè al Bicerin to try layers of espresso, chocolate, and milk, or Baratti e Milano, for the most luxurious coffee experience in town! And yes, all of that was beautiful. But strangely, the part I remember most happened later, when the day started winding down. During the afternoon, Amalfi felt almost too full of things to look at. Boats were constantly moving across the water, people were stopping in the middle of narrow streets to take photos, tables outside cafés were filling up, and everywhere I looked there seemed to be another staircase, another balcony, another tiny street disappearing between old buildings. I walked toward the center without much of a plan and eventually ended up near the cathedral square. There were baskets of lemons outside small shops, people sitting with gelato, café tables spilling onto the pavement, and that warm Italian summer noise of conversations coming from every direction. Then I saw one of those giant Amalfi lemons being served with lemon gelato inside. Of course I had to try it. It was messy, slightly ridiculous to carry around, and probably one of the most touristy things I did on the trip — but somehow it became one of my favorite memories. I walked through the narrow streets with melting lemon gelato in my hand while the temperature finally started dropping. That was when Amalfi began to change. The intense afternoon light softened. Shop windows started glowing. Restaurants turned on their little lamps. The stone streets became warmer in color, and people who had spent the day rushing between ferries and viewpoints suddenly seemed to slow down. Eventually I found myself back near the sea. The coastline looked completely different from earlier. During the day, Amalfi had felt dramatic — cliffs, blue water, boats, crowds, movement. At dusk, it felt intimate. Lights appeared one by one across the hillside. Restaurants along the waterfront became brighter as the sky became darker. The sea reflected small streaks of yellow light, and the colorful buildings above looked almost like they were floating on the mountain. That was the moment I understood why I wouldn’t recommend visiting Amalfi only as a quick daytime stop. You really need to see what happens after the beach bags start disappearing. For me, Amalfi was beautiful during the day, but the evening was when I actually fell in love with it. And I still can’t decide which memory wins: swimming beneath the cliffs or wandering through town with lemon gelato as the lights came on. The itinerary is also surprisingly good. Outbound, you fly the Boeing 777-300ER from Singapore to Dubai before connecting to the A380 for Milan. Coming home, it’s the A350 from Milan to Dubai, followed by the 777-300ER back to Singapore. And unlike the alternative itinerary I found, both Milan sectors use Malpensa (MXP), with relatively sensible Dubai connections. At this price, it isn’t simply about finding a cheap ticket to Europe. You stop and think: wow, what is that place? Pastries and patisseries are arranged like jewels in the display case. Waiters in formal attire move through rooms that still feel like the 1950s. It's elegant, old‑world, and quietly confident. I highly recommend the Uova in Purgatorio – eggs gently poached directly in a bubbling tomato sauce with Parmigiano and fresh basil. Simple, comforting, and delicious. They also do beautiful individual portions of the famous Sacher torte (generous enough for two). Their version uses raspberry jam, which cuts through the rich chocolate cake perfectly. A treat, and worth every cent. The place has been here since 1936, run by the same family for three generations. Poets, artists, and intellectuals used to gather here.
