#bucketlistdestinations Nat Ma Taung, also known as Mount Victoria, is the crown jewel of the Chin State. The road from Bagan to Kanpetlet is a bone-rattling 8-hour journey in a shared pickup (around 15,000 MMK, cash only). The final ascent to the summit (3,053m) takes you through a transition zone where the dry lowland forests give way to a mossy blue mountain forest dripping with fog. The Chin people here are famous for their traditional tattoos, but the mountain itself is the real masterpiece. I attempted the pre-dawn hike to the summit in jeans and a t-shirt, a rookie mistake. The temperature at the top hovers around 5°C. A Chin grandmother selling hot tea and hard-boiled eggs at the parking lot saw me shivering. She wordlessly unwrapped the shawl from her own shoulders and draped it over mine. “The mountain is cold, but the people are warm,” she said in Chin, her granddaughter translating. She refused my money for the shawl, only accepting payment for the tea (500 MMK). The view from the top is a sea of clouds, but the real magic is the forest on the way down. The trees are draped in thick, blue-tinged moss and epiphytes. It feels like walking through a giant’s greenhouse. The Chin State is one of the last places in Myanmar where the old ways still hold sway. This mountain isn’t a tourist destination; it’s a living sanctuary. Does the increasing accessibility of Nat Ma Taung risk turning a sacred Chin mountain into just another item on a traveler’s checklist?

This was the legendary mountain before what I learnt in Geography. Now is the time to set my feet on it. So happy for it. This is a must-do in Chin State. Coz it is located at (100,20) ft above sea level, it's not ok to hike up and down for everyone. I am also like to take hiking experience, but it's better to do it with motorbikes only. Otherwise, you will be exhausted coz of hiking for sure even in a few minutes. It will take only 15 minutes to go to the top of the mountain and to go down to the ground by taking motorbikes. But it will take about 2 & half hours to go up and down by hiking. It is not a good place for very young children and old people coz this is an adventurous and tiring trip. Natmataung Mountain (Mount Victoria) is the tallest mountain in Chin State. The mountain peak is one of the highest at Southeast Aisa, measuring 3,053m above sea level. Located in Kanpetlet Township, it is now under the protection of the Natmatuang National Park that was established in 1994. You will be able to see the panoramic view of Chin. This massive mountain has an ASEAN Heritage Park and is known to be a significant bird migration area. You will see hundreds of bird species including rare ones at this area. You can also trek the mountain and head towards the National Park that is only 15 miles away. Witness a bountiful of flora and fauna species in their natural habitat. This park has a strict rule against illicit hunting which is why it is a safe haven for endangered and rare wildlife species.
