Bird Haven Vila🌅
#mytraveldiary
Stretching along about 8.5 km of coastline in the municipality of Vila do Conde, from the mouth of the River Ave in the north to the mouth of the River Onda in the south, this protected landscape blends sea, dunes, wetland, rocks, and farmland. The Mindelo Ornithological Reserve, established in 1957, was Portugal’s first protected site for birds and forms a core part of this region. Together, they offer one of the most minimally preserved coastal zones between Esmoriz and Esposende.

Ambience & Setting
Here you’ll find a diverse patchwork of habitats: shifting sand dunes sculpted by wind and tide, rocky shores where waves crash, soft sandy beaches, patches of wetlands and marshes, and agricultural lands interspersed with bushlands. The mosaic of natural and semi-natural areas provides refuge for wildlife, especially birds and amphibians, while also giving a sense of coastal openness tempered by inland greenery.
