I arrived in Monbetsu on a tourist bus from Sapporo, a 3.5-hour drive, to board the drift ice sightseeing ship, the Garinko. There were many tour buses parked in the parking lot, and a fairly large crowd had gathered. The ship had seats on the first, second, and third floors, and it looked like we could even see the drift ice from the windows (though the windows were a bit dirty). People were thronging the deck... You need to search for "Momonbetsu Marine Park, Mombetsu City, Hokkaido, Japan 094-0031" for a more accurate location; you'll see a model icebreaker on land. I arrived in Mombetsu at 11:00 AM, only to be told that all the ferry services were full, and the earliest was the 2:30 PM ferry, but there were no ice floes that day either.
