Here’s my whirlwind journey across Northern Italy, from Palermo to Milan. The highlight? Experiencing Milan’s stunning Piazza del Duomo, the majestic Milan Cathedral, and chilling by the iconic Naviglio Grande — all with sun-drenched skies and those Italian vibes!
Top Spots to Visit in Milan:
1. Piazza del Duomo (P.za del Duomo, 20122 Milano MI, Italy) — Open 24/7, this central plaza is the heartbeat of the city. Perfect for early morning strolls or late-night people watching.
2. Milan Cathedral (Piazza Duomo, 1, Milan, Italy) — Open daily 9:00 AM–7:00 PM (except a few special days). Entry is €24, but it’s totally worth it for those epic rooftop views. Tip: Buy tickets early to skip the lines!
3. Naviglio Grande (Alzaia Naviglio Grande, 20144 Milano MI, Italy) — Open all day, every day. The canal is lined with cute cafes, perfect spots to grab an aperitivo, and vintage shops. Best to visit in the evening for a lively local scene.
Travel Insights:
Smoothest flight hack: Ryanair’s low-cost fares from Palermo mean extra cash for gelato and street food. Check sunny flying conditions — you get killer window seat views!
Local tip: Milan’s metro and tram network gets you everywhere fast. Get a day pass via trip.com and avoid taxi fees.
Money-saving: Water fountains in Milan are everywhere. Bring a bottle and refill!
Food recommendations: Don’t miss aperitivo along Naviglio Grande, pizza at Spontini near the Duomo, and breakfast espresso with cornetto at any local bar.
Key tips: Weather in spring is sunny but unpredictable — pack a light rain jacket. Most museums and attractions are card-friendly, but carry some cash for small purchases.

Solo in a Royal Landscape: The Gardens of Venaria Reale
#hellohalloween
While the Reggia di Venaria palace rightfully stuns every visitor, stepping into its Gardens (Giardini) is like discovering the royal family's private park. My solo trip here was a journey into a vast, beautifully orchestrated landscape of fountains, sculptures, and green "rooms," offering a peaceful and majestic escape perfect for an independent explorer.
My Perfect Solo Itinerary: A Morning of Leisurely Grandeur
10:00 AM - A Grand, Green Entrance
After marveling at the palace interior, I exited directly into the gardens. The scale is immediately impressive. Spread over 50 hectares, these are not intimate flower beds but a grand 17th-century French-style garden, recently restored to its original splendor. The sense of space and freedom was exhilarating.
10:30 AM - The Dance of Water and Sculpture
I began my walk along the central axis, following the path of the Grand Canal. The highlight here is the Fountain of Hercules, a monumental and powerful spectacle. As a solo visitor, I could stand and watch the play of water and light for as long as I wanted, with no one to hurry me along.
I then wandered through the Garden of Flora and Pomona, where intricate flower parterres are adorned with beautiful statues representing seasons and mythological figures. The solitude allowed me to appreciate the perfect symmetry and the quiet dialogue between art and nature.
12:00 PM - A Stroll to the Temple of Diana
For a change of pace and perspective, I took the shaded path up to the Tempio di Diana. This 18th-century hunting lodge, perched on a small hill, offers a breathtaking panoramic view back over the entire garden complex and the palace beyond. It was the perfect spot for a solo traveler to sit, enjoy the vista, and feel like the lord or lady of the entire domain.
Solo Traveler Tips I Discovered:
· Buy the Combined Ticket: The full "Reggia e Giardini" ticket is essential. You haven't truly experienced Venaria without walking in its gardens.
· Rent a Bike or Take the Train: The gardens are enormous! For a small fee, you can rent a bicycle or hop on the small tourist train that circuits the grounds, saving your energy for exploration.
· Pack a Water Bottle: You'll be doing a lot of walking in the open sun. Staying hydrated is key to enjoying your visit.
· Embrace the Scale: Don't rush. The beauty of these gardens is in their grand, sweeping vistas. Find a bench and just soak in the atmosphere of royal leisure.
The Gardens of Venaria Reale are a masterpiece of landscape architecture. For a solo traveler, they offer a peaceful, reflective, and wonderfully spacious counterpoint to the opulent crowds inside the palace.

Revolving Around the Beauty of Architecture: Eyes – Italy
Stop: Cappella Reale Espiatoria, Monza
The Cappella Reale Espiatoria in Monza is a solemn and intricately designed monument, built to honor the memory of King Umberto I of Italy, who was assassinated in 1900. Commissioned by his son, King Victor Emmanuel III, the chapel blends Gothic revival architecture with symbolic artistry, making it both a place of remembrance and a striking architectural landmark. Its tall spires, ornate stone carvings, and richly detailed mosaics emphasize reverence and grandeur, reflecting Italy’s historic tradition of commemorative architecture.
Surrounded by peaceful gardens, the chapel’s setting amplifies its contemplative atmosphere. Inside, visitors are drawn to the delicate stained glass windows and marble detailing, each telling a story of devotion, loss, and remembrance. The use of light and shadow within the space enhances the spiritual and emotional resonance of the memorial, while the exterior sculptures recall themes of sacrifice and eternity.
As both a historical site and an architectural masterpiece, the Cappella Reale Espiatoria stands as a testament to Italy’s royal past and its ability to weave memory into monumental design. For those exploring Monza, it offers not only a moment of reflection but also a chance to appreciate the blend of artistry, history, and solemnity that defines this remarkable structure.

Revolving Around the Beauty of Architecture: Eyes – Italy
Stop: Villa Reale di Monza
The Villa Reale di Monza is an exquisite neoclassical palace that embodies the elegance and grandeur of 18th-century Italian architecture. Commissioned by Archduke Ferdinand of Austria and designed by architect Giuseppe Piermarini, the villa was conceived as a royal summer residence, reflecting both refinement and harmony in its design. Its symmetrical façade, sweeping colonnades, and ornate interiors highlight the influence of Enlightenment ideals, where proportion and beauty were celebrated as symbols of cultural progress.
Inside, visitors encounter lavishly decorated halls, frescoed ceilings, and opulent furnishings that speak to the lifestyle of Europe’s aristocracy. Each room offers a glimpse into the artistic and social life of the Lombard court, with intricate detailing that combines Italian craftsmanship and Austrian influences. The expansive gardens surrounding the villa, with geometric layouts and serene pathways, extend its grandeur into the natural landscape, creating an integrated experience of architecture and environment.
Today, the Villa Reale di Monza stands not only as a monument to royal history but also as a cultural hub, hosting exhibitions, concerts, and events. Its careful preservation allows modern audiences to appreciate its artistic richness while engaging with its role in Italy’s architectural and historical narrative. For visitors, the villa represents a journey through time, art, and elegance in one of Lombardy’s most treasured landmarks.

My Day Trip to Monza: A Close Call at the Royal Villa! 🇮🇹👑
#summervacay
I almost missed seeing the Royal Villa in Monza, but what an incredible day trip it turned out to be! Monza, the third-largest municipality in Italy's Lombardy region after Milan and Brescia, is perfectly suited for a day trip from Milan.
My Recommended Route: Monza in a Day!
My itinerary started at the Duomo di Monza, moved to the Cappella Reale Espiatoria, and finished at the Villa Reale di Monza.
Getting there from Milan was easy; I took a local train and could even use my public transport pass. From Monza train station, it was just a 10-minute walk to the Cathedral, where I found plenty of restaurants if I needed a quick break. From the Cathedral, it was another 10 minutes to the Monument, and then only 5 minutes more to the Royal Villa. Behind the villa, the park is perfect for sunbathing, and there's even a small farm to explore.
Monza Cathedral (Duomo di Monza)
The Duomo di Monza is a stunning Gothic cathedral. Its facade alone is incredibly intricate and beautiful to behold. Though the main church was completed in 603 AD, it underwent continuous renovations and additions, finally reaching its current form in 1681.
Expiatory Chapel (Cappella Reale Espiatoria)
The Expiatory Chapel was commissioned by Vittorio Emanuele III, son and heir of King Umberto I. Architect Giuseppe Sacconi designed it to commemorate the very spot where his father was assassinated by anarchist Gaetano Bresci on July 29, 1900. It's a powerful and somber monument with a rich history.
