If you're torn between Moorea and Bora Bora and planning a trip to one of them, here are a few things we wish we knew before we went. Moorea is quieter, cheaper, and less touristy than Bora Bora. Getting here from Tahiti is easier, there are more accommodation options, and prices are way more budget-friendly. However, there are a few things to keep in mind. 🚗 Getting Around The island is pretty big, so you'll definitely need some form of transport. – Taxis are expensive—we paid 5500 XPF for a 30 km ride. – You can rent a scooter for around 5500 XPF a day, but we were also asked for a $1000 USD refundable deposit. – If you plan to really explore the island, renting a car is your best bet. Both international and local rental agencies operate on Moorea. 🏡 Where to Stay There are way more housing options here compared to Bora Bora: apartments, guesthouses, villas, and a few luxury resorts. We stayed in an apartment for about €103 a night. The price included kayaks, snorkeling gear, and direct lagoon access, so we didn't have to pay extra for rentals. ⚠️ Things to Keep in Mind · Pick your location carefully—the island is large, and the main attractions are pretty spread out. · There aren't many public beaches; many of the most beautiful coastal spots belong to the hotels. · Always book your taxi in advance—you can't just order a ride through a ride-hailing app here. · Shops close early, and many places are completely closed on Sundays. Bottom line: If you want to experience French Polynesia on a tighter budget and with a more relaxed vibe than Bora Bora, Moorea is a fantastic choice. Ideally, you should visit both islands with some well-planned logistics. But you'll definitely get the most out of Moorea if you explore it by car or scooter.

We arrived in Papeete in the evening from the US and stayed here our first night before heading to Bora Bora the next day. That night, we had a Garden View room in what seemed to be a newer section of the resort, which was very comfortable—a perfect spot to rest after our travels. The next morning, we enjoyed Sunday brunch featuring a dance performance, which far exceeded the Kona Hawaii luau experience we attended a few years ago. The performers were fantastic, with about 40 minutes of dancing, multiple costume changes, and a photo opportunity at the end. After Bora Bora, we booked a two-night stay since our departing flight wasn’t until after 9 PM, and we didn’t want to sit in the lobby for hours, which would’ve been the case even with a day pass. This time, the room felt like it was in an older or less updated part of the resort. The bed was extremely firm, and we couldn’t lower the temperature below 20°C or reduce the humidity. We were “upgraded” to a Moorea View room, but the view was only visible if you looked 90 degrees to the side from the balcony. Overall, it didn’t feel like the upgrade improved our stay. At check-in, we were given two free drink vouchers for being IHG members, which was a nice touch. The check-in and check-out staff were outstanding—welcoming and helpful. The grounds were beautiful, and the on-site restaurants offered food that was above average for hotel dining. While it’s unlikely we’ll return to this area of the world, I’d definitely stay here again if we ever did.

The most convenient route from Bora Bora to Moorea turned out to be this: first, a flight to Tahiti (as we used to get to Bora Bora), and then a ferry to Moorea. ✈️ Bora Bora → Tahiti The flight takes about 50 minutes. If you can get a window seat, don't miss it – the views of the Bora Bora lagoon on departure are just as impressive as on landing. These flights are usually open seating – just board the plane and choose any available seat! ⛴ Tahiti → Moorea From the airport, travel to the port of Papeete, from where ferries depart regularly. The main carriers are Aremiti and Terevau. Tickets start at 1350 XPF (approximately €11) one-way, and the journey takes 40-50 minutes. We used Aremiti and bought tickets before departure – no complications. You can also fly, but the flight only takes about 15 minutes and costs about five times more than the ferry. In our opinion, there's no real point in overpaying; the only convenience is not having to travel from the airport to the port. 🚢 The ferry itself was a pleasant surprise: spacious cabins, open decks, an onboard cafe, and a very beautiful interior. The trip turned out to be more than just a transfer between islands, but an additional part of the journey. So, my advice: if you're not pressed for time, choose the ferry. As someone who works in design, I’m usually pretty picky about colors and lighting, but man, the blues in French Polynesia are just different. It literally feels like walking through a high-budget film set. I spent most of my time just chilling, but these spots really blew me away: First off, Matira Beach in Bora Bora. The sand is incredibly fine, and the water transition from light turquoise to deep blue is insane. I just hung out here in the late afternoon around 3 to 5 PM when the sunlight gets really soft. Got some great, clean shots. It actually felt like being in one of those classic castaway movies, just pure tropical paradise. Then there's the Coral Garden in Taha'a. If you're going, do yourself a favor and bring a waterproof action cam. The underwater colors are crazy vivid. The boat ride to get there was a bit pricey, but honestly, it was pretty worth it. Lastly, you don't even need to pay for expensive tours to get the best views. Just walking along the water villa wooden decks during sunset is enough. The sunset colors against the water are top-tier. Overall, it’s definitely on the expensive side, but for the visuals? Not bad at all. Pretty good experience.
