2026 Morlaix Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in August)

Older than Stonehenge, the Megalithic Temples of Malta, and the Great Pyramids of Egypt, the Cairn of Barnenez has lurked quietly on the western edge of France for millennia waiting for people to remember that it’s there. At some 6500 years old it’s a strong contender for the title ‘oldest building in Europe’ - something that propels the circumstances of its rediscovery by Brittany’s modern residents firmly into the category of ‘sacrilege extraordinaire’. The inhabitants of the burial chamber were rudely awakened from their eternal slumber in the 1950’s when a huge chunk of the western end was quarried out for construction stone. Luckily, the discovery of four of the burial chambers halted the destruction, and the remains of the edifice have been sensitively restored and looked after ever since. What tops off this great day out, though, is the free bus (LineoTim number 20, from the stop under Morlaix viaduct) that takes you through beautiful pastoral surroundings to the coast. Get off at the ‘Cairn de Barnenez’ stop outside a campsite, and catch the bus back to Morlaix from the other Cairn de Barnenez stop at the crossroads (yes, we were confused too - I’ve included pictures of both stops). If you have time you could even ride the rest of the bus route, which takes you past vast white-sand beaches (Saint Samson Plage us the best) to the village of Saint-Jean-du-Doigt, which, as the name suggests, proudly boasts a treasury containing the finger of St John the Baptist. · Location: near Plouézoc’h, Brittany, France · Entrance to the cairn is €7 for adults. Morlaix’s stand-out feature is its statuesque railway viaduct which has stood straddling the town - despite Allied attempts to bomb it - since 1865. The walkway traversing this leviathan’s first level is a great way to orient yourself on arrival: marvel at the viaduct’s awesome underbelly, and drink in the views (framed by tottering spires, chimneys and jaunty attic windows) across the market on Place des Otages to the Town Hall. Take either the stairway marked by the mural of the mystic with a snake, or, on the opposite side, the staircase leading from the Venelles de Morlaix walk. Entrance is free (daylight hours only). From the viaduct, hot-foot it down to Bar Le Commerce on Place des Otages (I know it’s early on in the visit, but it’s got a great range of beers and the terrace is a prime place to soak up the Morlaisienne atmosphere. I also love its screens of authentic French random sport). Place des Otages isn’t the only striking square in Morlaix; if you walk generally south-west you’ll be rewarded with a smattering of beautiful half-timbered houses culminating in venerable old Place Allende, bordered by bewitching seventeenth-century dwellings that look straight out of a magical movie. Here there is one of Morlaix’s ‘must-do’ attractions: the stunning Maison de la Duchesse Anne with its ornate carved staircase (entrance €3). For lunch, neighbouring Ty Coz is a good option. They describe themselves as a cultural bistro, and it does have an intellectual air - along with a great selection of local real ales and cheese platters. Let lunch settle with a stroll back along the waterside as far as Quai de Léon, where you’ll find La Manufacture, an ex-tobacco factory with fascinating exhibitions about its smoky history. Also on this site are a Science Museum (great for kids with lots of hands-on exhibits) and an Arts Centre that specialises in Morlaix’s wonderful street art.
