Mountain, Beach and Temple - what a place. A highly recommended place for 3/4 days tour. I took bus from Suzhou and got off at the Putuo bus station. Then took another tourist bus (red double decker) to the ferri station. Had a 15mins vessel (small ship) ride and finally arrived at the Putuo mountain. That was just at the wharf. Then took another tourist bus to Zizhulin Bamboo Forest where the Guanyin Pusa statue is located. Later walked to another place called `Unwilling to go` (please check online to know the interesting story behind this name). Next day, I visited all major three temples of Putuo - Puji, Huiji and Fayu temple. If you want to visit to Huiji temple, think twice. You have to take stiff stairs of about 2 km. It`s really a hard job than it sounds. Trust me! At the end of the day, I went to the beach and rest for a while. One thing, here hotels and foods are expensive. And in Putuo other than bus, there is no other option for journey. Either you walk or take bus. This island is filled with temples and people come here to pray. Best day to visit is not on the weekend. We came on Thursday and it was already lots of people, but it was not packed and crowded. As we were leaving the island on Friday, people were starting to arrive and it was very crowded. To get around the island, it is not hard. There are shuttle buses that you can catch, and pay as you go. On the bus station, it tells you the next bus destination, so you won't be lost. Really enjoyed the view from the cable car where you can have a bird's eye view looking out the island. Every inch of land is soaked in Zen, and every sea breeze carries the warmth of faith. Arriving at Zhujiajian Wugongzhi Pier, after boarding the boat for just a short while, the cruise docks at Putuo Mountain Pier. From the pier to Puji Temple, you can choose to walk or take the scenic area shuttle bus. Walking, the stone slabs underfoot are worn smooth by time, and the surrounding plants and scenery unfold slowly like a scripture waiting to be carefully read; taking the bus allows for a brief rest while enjoying the panoramic views along the way. Both ways have their own charm. The island is lush with greenery, and century-old trees are everywhere. Some have twisted branches, others stand tall like canopies, each shape seemingly holding stories of time. Interestingly, many trees have been adopted by people, a tradition believed to bring blessings, adding a touch of human warmth and kindness to the forest. Temples are scattered along the route, their red walls and black tiles hidden among green trees and blue sea. Looking up reveals the grandeur of the "Buddhist Kingdom of Sea and Sky," while looking down shows the tranquility of the "Sacred Realm of the South Sea." No words are needed; the mind naturally calms. Puji Temple is the island’s core place for prayer. The scenic area offers three free incense sticks, while visitors’ own cylindrical incense sticks are kept outside the temple. This rule reflects reverence and purity of faith. Inside, incense smoke curls around worshippers holding incense sticks; some chant quietly, expressing their heartfelt wishes; others kneel devoutly, entrusting their hopes to the Bodhisattva. Amid the interplay of light and shadow, the warmth of incense and the sincerity of the people blend, creating a solemn and moving scene that inspires awe and a deep understanding of compassion and kindness. Leaving Puji Temple, head along the coast toward the South Sea Guanyin. In the sunlight, the statue of the South Sea Guanyin is bathed in golden light, standing majestically between mountain and sea, dignified yet gentle. From the moment you arrive on the island, you can see its silhouette from afar, and approaching it up close is even more awe-inspiring. Large crowds of pilgrims gather here, some standing with hands clasped, others praying silently. The power of faith here is silent yet overwhelming. Descending from the South Sea Guanyin, make brief stops at Bukenqu Guanyin Courtyard and Purple Bamboo Forest, then follow the beach back to the pier. The sea breeze gently brushes by, carrying the salty freshness of the sea and the fragrance of plants. Looking back toward Putuo Mountain, the red walls, green trees, blue sea, and golden Guanyin statue blend into a picturesque scene.
