If you want to experience trekking in Nepal but have limited time, and are looking for a relatively easy, less crowded route with 360-degree views of snow-capped mountains, I recommend Kokhe Danda. This is a stunning, lesser-known trekking route that features sunrise, sunset, a sea of clouds, and views of the Annapurna, Machapuchare (Fish Tail), Dhaulagiri, and other Himalayan snow mountains. It only takes three days and two nights to complete. Here’s my itinerary: 1️⃣ Pokhara - Kushma - Banau - Haljure - Lespar, accommodation: Sunrise Homestay, transportation: bus, tricycle, jeep. 2️⃣ Lespar - Mohare Danda - Kokhe Danda, accommodation: AAPA Cottage. Actually, Mohare has more lodging options and good views; it’s only 20 minutes from Kokhe. 3️⃣ Kokhe Danda - Lespar - Pokhara, take a village jeep to Kushma, then a vehicle back to Pokhara. ✅ Advantages: Few people, beautiful scenery, no mountain entry permit required 🪪. Even most foreign trekkers only go as far as Mohare Danda, so it’s quiet and peaceful. ❌ Disadvantage: You need to return the same way. ✅ Non-return route: Kokhe Danda - Taprang - Banthati - Pokhara. ❗️But you need to check the permit. If you have more time, you can visit nearby Bun Mountain and ABC (Annapurna Base Camp). Of course, if you lack outdoor experience, the return route is not suitable for solo travel. After Lespar village, you cross a large area of primeval forest with no signal and almost no people. On the morning I arrived at Banau, I was lucky to see the golden sunlight on Dhaulagiri. It was so quiet that I could only hear the chirping of insects and birds and my heartbeat. The mud-walled old houses with orange chrysanthemums, the 8,000-meter snow mountains in the distance, the nearby villages and terraced fields, children going to school by the roadside, and local people working—all looked exactly like the Nepalese countryside I saw in a Pokhara art studio. Haljure village is one hour from Banau. The first homestay here is run by an elderly lady. She has a kitten and a puppy, and from the doorstep, you can see Machapuchare and Annapurna. In front of me were blue houses and white snow mountains, sunlight warming me, wrapping my heart in warmth and peace. Back in Sichuan on an afternoon, with sunlight on me, I still remember stepping alone onto this rarely visited land. Closing my eyes and opening the live view, it feels as if the Himalayan breeze is blowing past my ears again... ⚠️ Parent-child tip: This route is suitable for parent-child families with some trekking experience. Children should be 8 years or older and well prepared.

The usual views of Dhaulagiri are from two places: the Boon Mountain viewpoint on the ABC trek and the final crossing of Thorong La Pass to Muktinath village on the ACT trek. The view of Dhaulagiri from Boon Mountain resembles Mount Kailash, while the views from Jaljala Pass and Muktinath on the ACT trek show Dhaulagiri from northern and southern angles, respectively, with the peak shape being more similar.

Got around by bus, tuk-tuk, and jeep. 2️⃣ Lespar → Mohare Danda → Kokhe Danda. Crashed at AAPA Cottage. Btw, Mohare has more places to stay with pretty good views too, and it's just a 20-minute walk from Kokhe. 3️⃣ Kokhe Danda → Lespar → Pokhara. Hopped on a village jeep to Kushma, then caught a ride back to Pokhara. ✅ What's great: Not many people around, stunning views, and no mountain permit needed. Most hikers, even foreigners, usually just go as far as Mohare Danda, so it's pretty quiet and peaceful. ❌ The downside: You'll need to go back the same way you came. ✅ If you want to avoid backtracking: Try Kokhe Danda → Taprang → Banthati → Pokhara. ❗️ But make sure you check if you need a permit for this one. Got extra time? You could also check out nearby Mount Bune and ABC. Just a heads up though - if you're new to hiking, the backtracking route isn't really ideal for going solo. Once you pass Lespar village, you'll be walking through this huge stretch of untouched forest with zero signal and hardly anyone around. Woke up in Banau one morning and got super lucky - caught Dhaulagiri all lit up in the golden sunrise. It was so quiet there, all I could hear were the birds chirping, insects buzzing, and my own heartbeat. The old mud-walled houses with orange chrysanthemums, the 8,000-meter peaks in the distance, the village and terraced fields up close, kids heading to school and locals working in the fields... it was exactly like the Nepalese countryside I'd seen in the art studio back in Pokhara. Haljure village is about an hour's walk from Banau. The first homestay you'll find there is run by this sweet old lady. She's got a little cat and dog, and you can see Machapuchare and Annapurna right from her doorstep. #itinerarycheck Itinerary Check: Ghandruk → Ghorepani → Poon Hill (Annapurna South Face) I did this classic 4-day teahouse trek in late March, timed so the rhododendron forests between Ghandruk and Deurali were in full crimson bloom. Flying into Pokhara (USD 110 from Kathmandu on a budget carrier), I took a shared jeep from the Baglung Bus Park to Kimche (NPR 600, ~USD 4.50, 2.5 hrs on a rough switchback road). From Kimche it’s a 1-hour paved climb to Ghandruk (1,940 m), a Gurung village where I paid NPR 200 entry (ACAP permit, brought in advance from Kathmandu or Pokhara’s tourism board office—carry passport photos). Day 1 Ghandruk to Tadapani (2,630 m): 6–7 hrs, mostly uphill stone stairs through rhododendron and oak. Teahouses in Tadapani are basic; I paid NPR 800 for a twin room and NPR 450 for dal bhat. Friend Luke and I decided to meet halfway around the world and spend nearly three weeks touring Nepal and Tibet via China, which turned out to be excellent thanks to Himalayan Windows. I highly recommend the Mardi Himal trek. It's a moderately challenging, less crowded teahouse trek in Nepal's Annapurna region. The route offers stunning close-up views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri, passing through beautiful rhododendron forests and high-ridge landscapes. Our guide, Raj, was exceptional—highly experienced and well-connected. He ensured our safety, health, and proper nourishment throughout the trek and secured the best teahouse accommodations. Nestled against the continuous snowy peaks and guarding the sea of clouds at dawn and dusk, it allowed me to experience the ultimate clash of storm and clear sky in a single day. When I arrived yesterday, the mountain weather changed suddenly. Dark clouds surged over the mountain tops, and hailstones the size of beans poured down without warning, striking roofs and leaves with a crackling sound. The white hail instantly covered the hillside, while the distant snowy mountains and nearby forests were shrouded in a chaotic mist, leaving only a hazy white between heaven and earth. The mountain wind carried a chill as it swept through the hall. Standing quietly by the window, I found a wild kind of poetic beauty in this sudden mountain storm. After a peaceful night, I was awakened by the faint light outside the window in the morning. The moment I opened the window, I was speechless—the storm from last night had long passed, and under a clear blue sky, a grand sunrise was slowly unfolding. The eastern horizon glowed with soft dawn light, gradually blending into shades of orange, pink, and gold. A ray of morning light pierced through the clouds, gently shining on the continuous Himalayan peaks. The snowy mountains gradually awakened, their summits gilded with dazzling golden light. From Dhaulagiri Peak to Mount Everest, the snow-capped peaks stretched endlessly like a silver dragon spanning the horizon, sacred and magnificent. On clear days, the snowy mountains are as vivid as paintings, seemingly within reach; when clouds and mist rise, the mountains appear and disappear like a dream. Without the noise of the city, only the mountain wind, pine waves, and endless mountain and sea scenery remain, making the heart clear and peaceful. Life, it turns out, is like the weather in Nagarkot—there are unexpected storms, but also unexpected bright suns. The rains we endure and the darkness we survive will eventually turn into clear skies after the rain, dawn’s rosy light, and this breathtaking earthly spectacle before our eyes. We hiked the entire route to the summit of Dhaulagiri and camped overnight to enjoy the view of the peak in the morning. The atmosphere was fantastic, resting by the river with fairly cool weather.
