#underratedspots One of the free Nara viewpoints I think gets overlooked is the one at Nigatsudo. Most people come to this part of Todai-ji for the Great Buddha, but we went up to Nigatsudo around 5pm during winter and ended up catching the last bit of daylight over Nara. 🌇 Come around sunset Japan gets dark surprisingly early in winter, so 5pm+ was actually a really nice time to be there. We arrived in the late afternoon, just as the sky was starting to change, and could see Nara stretching out below from the wooden veranda. As the light faded, the city slowly started lighting up too. It was much quieter than the main Todai-ji area, which made it a nice place to just stand around and take in the view. If you’re visiting during winter, I’d check the sunset time for the day and work backwards rather than assuming 5pm will always be right. You’ll want enough time to walk up before the light disappears. 🏮 The viewpoint Nigatsudo sits higher up on the hillside behind Todai-ji, so you do have to walk uphill and take some stairs to get there. The wooden veranda is the main spot for the view. You get a wide look over Nara, with the city below and hills further out. The temple itself is also really photogenic, especially with the wooden structure and lanterns around the veranda. 🚶 Worth the extra walk It’s easy to skip Nigatsudo when you’re already focused on Todai-ji, but I think the extra walk is worth it. You don’t need to spend ages here either. Around an hour is enough to walk up, explore, take photos and enjoy the viewpoint. A few things to know: We went around 5pm+ during winter Check the sunset time before going Go a little earlier so you have time to walk up There are stairs and an uphill section The wooden veranda has the best views Around 1 hour is enough Late afternoon is great for sunset colours It gets dark quickly in winter, so plan accordingly Wear comfortable shoes I think this is one of those Nara stops that’s easy to overlook because it isn’t the main attraction. Seven cities in ten days sounds like an itinerary that leaves you needing a vacation to recover from your vacation. But it doesn't have to be that way. The main mistake here isn't the number of cities. It's when people try to string together seven far-flung destinations and end up spending every other day lugging a suitcase around. If you want to see different sides of Japan in one trip, it's best to build your route along a single transit axis and do day trips to some cities without changing hotels. Here is an option I would genuinely recommend for a first trip. DAYS 1–3 • TOKYO 3 nights / 3 days Don't try to see all of Tokyo. Divide the city into logical zones: Day 1: Asakusa → Ueno → Akihabara in the evening Day 2: Meiji Jingu → Harajuku → Shibuya Day 3: Shinjuku → a quieter neighborhood like Kagurazaka or Kiyosumi-Shirakawa This way, in three days, you'll at least get an initial feel for the different vibes of the city. DAY 4 • KAMAKURA 🚆 Tokyo → Kamakura → Tokyo Leave your suitcase at the hotel. Kamakura is perfect as a day trip: temples, green hills, the Great Buddha, and the coast are all relatively close to Tokyo. Basic route: Kita-Kamakura → temples → Hase → Great Buddha → Enoshima or the coast Head back to Tokyo in the evening. City #2 checked off, without changing hotels. DAY 5 • KYOTO Move in the morning: 🚅 Tokyo → Kyoto After checking in, don't try to knock out half the temples right away. It's better to take a relaxed first route: Gion → Yasaka Shrine → Higashiyama → evening stroll If you arrive early enough, you can explore part of Higashiyama in the afternoon. But I would still save Kiyomizu-dera for a separate early morning. WHERE WE SLEEP 🛏 Tokyo: 4 nights 🛏 Kyoto: starting the second block So in the first five days, we've already covered: TOKYO → KAMAKURA → KYOTO without the daily hassle of dragging suitcases around. DAY 6 • KYOTO Dedicate a full day just to Kyoto. For example: 07:30 Kiyomizu-dera → Sannenzaka → Ninenzaka → Yasaka Pagoda → Kodai-ji → Gion Or choose Arashiyama if that's a higher priority for you. Don't try to pack both sides of the city into a single day. DAY 7 • UJI + NARA Here you can combine two small cities along the same train line. Morning: 🍵 Kyoto → Uji Byodo-in → tea street → Uji River. Afternoon: 🚆 Uji → Nara Nara Park → Todai-ji → Kasuga Taisha. In the evening, you can either stay overnight in Nara or head back to Kyoto. To minimize moving around, I'd choose Kyoto as a single base. That takes care of cities #4 and #5. DAY 8 • OSAKA 🚆 Kyoto → Osaka Head over in the morning and drop your bags at the hotel. During the day, you could check out Osaka Castle and the central districts, and in the evening, dive into the Osaka that everyone really comes for: Shinsekai → Namba → Dotonbori. 🛏 Overnight in Osaka. DAY 9 • HIMEJI 🚅 Osaka → Himeji → Osaka City #7. The main goal is Himeji Castle, one of the most beautifully preserved original castle complexes in Japan. After the castle, add in Koko-en Garden. And then... just go back. There's no need to squeeze in three more cities just because the day isn't over yet. DAY 10 • OSAKA Keep the final day free of major travel. You could hit up Kuromon Market, Nakanoshima, Umeda, do some shopping, or just relax for a few hours before your flight. If your return flight is out of Tokyo, you'll need to adjust the itinerary to allow for the trip back to the capital. THE FINAL 7 CITIES 1. Tokyo — the megalopolis 2. Kamakura — temples + sea 3. Kyoto — the historic capital 4. Uji — tea + river 5. Nara — ancient temples + park 6. Osaka — food + nightlife 7. Himeji — the castle OVERNIGHT STAYS Tokyo — 4 Kyoto — 3 Osaka — 2 And this is the key point. 7 cities ≠ 7 hotels. Over ten days, there are only three bases here. Kamakura is a day trip from Tokyo; Uji and Nara from Kyoto; Himeji from Osaka. This is exactly how an itinerary stays action-packed without turning into ten days of: check-out → train station → train → luggage lockers → sightseeing → check-in → repeat. For an itinerary like this, I'd even make a separate saveable cheat sheet: "7 cities / 3 hotels / all transit." It's much more useful here than just another list of attractions.

I've been planning an independent trip to Osaka recently and realized there are actually so many spots around the city worth visiting~ 🦌 Nara + Uji In the morning, head to Nara Park to see the deer 🦌, take a stroll around Todai-ji Temple and Kasuga Taisha Shrine, and soak in the historic vibes of the ancient capital. In the afternoon, make your way to Uji 🍵. It's absolute bliss for matcha lovers~ You can take your time wandering around Byodo-in Temple, the matcha shops along Omotesando, and The Tale of Genji sites. Nara is a small city near Osaka and Kyoto where deer are considered sacred animals. According to Shinto tradition, they have been revered as messengers of the gods for over 1,200 years, and thanks to this status, they roam freely throughout the city instead of being kept in enclosures—today there are about 1,300 of them, and all are under official protection as a national treasure. Visiting and falling in love—that's Nara in a nutshell. It's a place where you turn into a Disney princess. How to get there 🚉 We traveled from Osaka by train, which is the most convenient option. There are two ways to go: ✨ JR Line: from Osaka Station to JR Nara Station, takes about 50 minutes. ✨ Kintetsu Line: from Osaka-Namba Station to Kintetsu Nara Station, takes about 35–40 minutes—and importantly, it's only a 5-minute walk from this station to the park, whereas it takes about 20 minutes from JR Nara Station. So, if you're not relying on a JR Pass, the Kintetsu Line is definitely more convenient. First steps in the park 🦌 Once you arrive at the park, you can immediately buy a few packs of deer crackers—they'll be gone in a flash. Please take this seriously: you shouldn't feed the deer just anything. Right in front of me, a woman was feeding them spicy chips, and I just wanted to cover my eyes 😱 Don't linger right at the start of the path—the park is massive and incredibly beautiful. Feel free to venture deeper into the scenic grove and closer to the temples. Especially for the subway 🚇 Google Maps shows the lines, transfers, departure times, and even the exact station exit you need. Plus, you can save all your spots in advance and build your route directly through them. We were in Japan for 8 days and managed to hit up Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara — it would've been so tough without Google Maps 😭 🗺️ 2. DON'T TRY TO SEE ALL OF JAPAN We squeezed in 4 cities in 8 days, but I definitely wouldn't do that now ! If your trip is only 6–8 days, I'd highly recommend picking a maximum of 2 cities and taking your time to explore them. Even a week just for Tokyo might not be enough. Also, it's better to book intercity train tickets and some attractions in advance — like a few weeks ahead, because the good options sell out fast. 🍣 3. EXPENSIVE SUSHI ≠ DELICIOUS SUSHI And this goes for food in general. Maybe it's just our experience, but we actually liked the sushi from 7-Eleven more than at some pricey restaurants ! Japanese people generally aren't big on cooking at home, so convenience stores are packed with ready-to-eat meals. Honestly, when it comes to cafes and restaurants, the most mouth-watering dishes were often found in small, cheap local mom-and-pop shops. So don't be afraid to walk into places that lack a fancy interior or a line of tourists. 💸 4. DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE BUDGET It totally depends on your travel style, but it's hard to call Japan a budget-friendly destination. My breakdown was roughly: ✈️ ~70,000 ₽ — flights 🏠 ~$650 — accommodation + intercity trains Plus food, transit, entertainment, and shopping 🛍️ We were a group of 6 and rented a house — it turned out way cheaper for us than a hotel. In my experience, you should budget at least ~200,000 ₽ per person, factoring in flights, accommodation, transit, food, and other expenses. But the final amount heavily depends on the season and your comfort level. 🚇 5. GET A SUICA CARD Don't bother buying a separate subway ticket every single time. Suica makes traveling a breeze: top up your balance → tap the card → go. You can also use it to pay for stuff at conbini, vending machines, and a bunch of other places. 💴 BONUS: BRING SOME CASH Cards are widely accepted, but you might still need cash for small joints and local hidden gems. And one more thing: English might not help much in day-to-day interactions, especially in smaller towns. We got the vibe that most Japanese locals aren't fluent in English. So it's best to always have a translator app handy on your phone! Stations usually have English info, but in tricky situations, a translator app is an absolute lifesaver. 📶 You can also buy a SIM/eSIM in advance via Trip.com — everything worked flawlessly for us and didn't cost a fortune. 🥺 BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY — LEAVE SOME TIME TO JUST WANDER WITHOUT AN ITINERARY. Despite a pretty packed trip, my impressions of Japan are just mind-blowing! I definitely want to go back — and for sure more than once! Before visiting Japan, I expected everything to be incredibly expensive. Surprisingly, that wasn’t my experience at all. I spent around USD 120 - 180 per day, including a comfortable hotel, transportation, food, and sightseeing. Staying near train stations made getting around easy, and convenience stores like 7-Eleven and Lawson often became my go to for quick, affordable meals that tasted much better than I expected. Some of my biggest expenses were entrance tickets and long distance train rides, but they were worth every yen. Walking through the endless torii gates at Fushimi Inari Taisha, watching the sunset from Osaka Castle, crossing the famous Shibuya Crossing, and exploring the peaceful streets around Senso ji Temple became unforgettable highlights. Osaka - Kyoto - Nara 🍵🌷 Osaka in June is just as gorgeous as any other month. Everywhere you look, there's lush, eye-soothing greenery. The summer flowers are vibrantly colored, especially the hydrangeas that are blooming everywhere. The weather is cool and breezy—not too hot, though the sun can be surprisingly harsh in certain spots T_T Besides Osaka, Kyoto and Nara are equally stunning. I totally fell in love with Kyoto because Arashiyama is way more beautiful than I ever imagined! The riverside of the Katsura River is the absolute best. Enjoying the scenic view with the cool breeze blowing is pure bliss. And the biggest surprise was Uji! It's incredibly beautiful and perfect for a stroll. Honestly, if I had the time, I'd probably wander around there all day, haha. During my visit, there were stalls giving off major local temple fair vibes—egg-scooping games, lucky draws—it was so lively and bustling! Overall, I'm deeply impressed with Kansai. Even though it was packed everywhere (seriously, insanely packed with tourists and students on school trips T_T), there was never a dull moment. There was so much to see, and each spot had its own distinct, non-repetitive charm. The food was amazing, too! I discovered that I absolutely adore Osaka-style takoyaki—so soft and gooey. After a long day of sightseeing, being able to take a hot shower and relax in the bath is fantastic. There's a self-service amenities area on the second floor. Toothbrushes, razors, toner, cotton swabs, tea bags, etc., are convenient and prevent waste. 🍜【4.
