Next, stop by Shinkyo Bridge, an iconic red bridge that serves as a symbol of the town. It's incredibly gorgeous for photos, especially in the morning or during the autumn foliage season. When Tokyo was 35 degrees and felt like my soul was melting, I escaped to Karuizawa’s 25-degree summer in just an hour on the Shinkansen 🧊 I instantly felt alive again The 1,000-meter-high plateau basin is no joke. In July, short sleeves are perfect during the day, but you actually need a light jacket in the morning and evening. I even dug out a knit cardigan from my suitcase 😂 🚄 “How’s the transportation?” From Tokyo Station to Karuizawa Station, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen Hakutaka, fastest direct trip in 62 minutes, reserved seat 6,420 JPY Key point 💡 Buy the JR Tokyo Wide Pass (15,000 JPY/3 days). Karuizawa is covered, so one round trip pays for itself. You can also use it to visit Nikko and Kawagoe on other days—great value Right outside Karuizawa Station is the outlet mall. Lockers cost 400–700 JPY. Big lockers fill up early, so go early What to do after arriving? Here are three routes I tried for you 👇 🚲 “Cycling is the way to go” The soul of Karuizawa is cycling! The two churches are connected by a 3-minute walk, so visit both together 🍃 “Rest stop guide for Elm Street Town” Also in the Hoshino Resort area, a small commercial street built along a creek with about ten independent shops and cafes Sitting at an outdoor seat by the creek with a hand-brewed coffee, listening to the flowing water—this kind of relaxation doesn’t exist in Tokyo I recommend Maru’s coffee, made with locally roasted Karuizawa beans, very clean taste 🏡 “Where to stay” 🌲 The guesthouse is deep in the birch forest of Naka-Karuizawa, just a few minutes’ drive from Hoshino Resort, surrounded by towering trees, with green views from every window 🌲 The whole house is a log cabin style with a high-ceiling living room and a floor-to-ceiling fireplace (purely decorative in summer but sets the mood). The loft bedroom upstairs has a skylight, perfect for star-gazing from bed at night 🌲 The host provides hand-brew coffee equipment and local Karuizawa tea. Drinking coffee on the terrace while listening to birds in the morning—that’s what a vacation should be Here’s how to plan your second day 👇 💦 “Shiraito Falls: only worth visiting in summer” From Karuizawa Station North Exit, take the Kusakaru Kotsu bus from platform 2 to Shiraito Falls Station, about 20 minutes, fare 720 JPY The waterfall is only 3 meters high but 70 meters wide!! Summer has the most water flow, like a white curtain spread out. About 800 JPY per jar—perfect as a souvenir The local loop bus also passes here, 100 JPY per ride, convenient for those who want to skip walking 📋 “Practical tips” · Average temperature in Karuizawa in July is 20–25 degrees, cool in the morning and evening, so bring a light jacket · UV rays are stronger than in the lowlands! Exploring Nikko, a World Heritage City A city boasting both breathtaking beauty and a rich cultural heritage. 🚞🚌 For this trip, we took a train from Ueno Station and got off at Tobu Nikko Station. From there, you can easily walk around and explore the city. This time, we visited the World Heritage area! 📍 Shinkyo Bridge: A sacred bridge located within the grounds of Futarasan Shrine. 📍 Futarasan Shrine (Futarasan Jinja): An ancient shrine with a history of over 1,000 years. 📍 Nikko Toshogu Shrine: Considered the absolute highlight of Nikko, registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. 📍 Taiyuin Temple: Situated just west of Nikko Toshogu Shrine. 📍 Rinnoji Temple (Rinnōji): The most important temple in Nikko.

If you're getting bored of Tokyo, I highly recommend escaping to Nikko for a day trip. Let's check it out! World Heritage Shrines and Temples of Nikko Shinkyo Bridge x Toshogu Shrine x Rinnoji Temple x Futarasan Shrine They're all in the same area, so you can easily explore everything on foot. You can keep the pace super chill—a day trip is absolutely perfect for this👍 ⛩️ Shinkyo Bridge This is the landmark at the entrance. You'll spot its eye-catching red color right as you arrive. Spanning the river below, it instantly shifts your vibe from "tourist mode" to feeling like you've just "entered a sacred realm." 🌿 Rinnoji Temple This is the perfect first stop. It's not too crowded, and the vibe is pretty quiet. You can take your time strolling around as a warm-up for the rest of Nikko. Just a heads-up: you'll need to buy a separate ticket if you want to go inside the main hall~ 🏯 Toshogu Shrine Definitely set aside a chunk of time for this one. The whole place is incredibly ornate and packed with details—you'll find yourself constantly stopping to take it all in. The famous Three Wise Monkeys🙉🙈🙊, the Imagined Elephants🐘, and the Sleeping Cat🐈 are all here. The architectural art is absolutely stunning. It’s the resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Keep in mind you need a separate ticket for this, and photography isn't allowed inside⚠️ ⛰ Futarasan Shrine Personally, I think this is a hidden gem. Lots of trees, fresh air, and it's nice and quiet. If Toshogu is "glamorous," then Futarasan is simply "soothing." You'll feel super relaxed walking through here. Rumor has it that the golden rabbit🐇 brings luck in love, so definitely go give it a rub~ 📍 I'm a massive "P" (super spontaneous), so this was a totally last-minute trip. Make sure to book your train tickets in advance via Tobu Railway or major booking platforms! I got there at 1:30 PM on Feb 1, 2026. The earlier you arrive, the better, as the morning sunlight is gorgeous. I highly recommend riding the newest "SPACIA X" train—sadly, I missed out on it this time around😩 I departed from Asakusa Station, and the ride took about 2 hours. Once you step out of Tobu Nikko Station, you can hop right on a bus to Shinkyo Bridge. Alternatively, you can take a 30-minute stroll and browse the local shops along the way. When you're done at Futarasan Shrine, there are buses waiting to take you straight back to Tobu Nikko Station. Not having to trek all the way back is an absolute blessing for lazy folks like me~😊
