🎅 Must-visit Christmas events (late November to early January) ❶ Millennium Park Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony Chicago’s most ceremonial Christmas kickoff! The 68-foot Norwegian spruce 🎄 for 2025 will be lit up on November 21 at 6:25 PM, with warm-up performances starting at 5 PM: Mariachi female vocal band, America’s Got Talent choir, and a magical circus show take turns performing. At the moment of lighting, fireworks 🎆 will burst from the top of the Cultural Center, making it super romantic~ ✨Tips: Arrive an hour early at Wrigley Square for front-row spots, wear windproof down jackets + snow boots, and there’s a hot mulled wine stall to warm your hands~ The Christmas tree will stay lit until January 11, 2026, so you can still catch it even if you miss the opening! ❷ Lincoln Park Zoo Lights Who doesn’t love a free winter wonderland! 🦒 3 million LED lights transform the zoo into a fairy tale world, with color-changing light tunnels, animated installations, and ice sculpture demonstrations. Walking along the lamp-decorated tree-lined paths at night feels like stepping into Frozen~ ⏰ Time: Late November to early January ❸ Navy Pier Cheer at the Pier Winter carnival vibes MAX! Indoor ice skating rink, hot cocoa bar, and photo ops with Santa 📸. On December 4, there’s an exclusive night session (6-9 PM) to try attractions early, with commemorative gifts for the first 300 visitors~ On weekend nights at 8 PM, there’s a free fireworks show. Watching fireworks under the Ferris wheel is just too romantic! 🎡🎆 ⚠️ Note: Navy Pier closes at 8 PM Sunday-Thursday in winter, extended to 10 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, and is closed on Christmas Day~ ❹ Magnificent Mile Lights Festival Parade On November 22, Michigan Avenue transforms into a fairy tale avenue! Disney floats + giant balloon parade 🎈, Mickey Mouse personally lights up a million tree lights, and after the parade, there’s a fireworks show by the Chicago River. The whole street is filled with holiday cheer~ 🎇 Ultimate New Year’s Eve Experience (December 31) ❶ Chicago River Dual Fireworks Show The big move for New Year’s 2025! Starting at 10 PM, the Merchandise Mart building will feature an artistic projection countdown ⏳. At 11:55 PM, the bridges will simultaneously launch fireworks, illuminating the Chicago River bridges, paired with the skyline for breathtaking views~ Best viewing spot is the Franklin Street section of Upper Wacker Drive. Be sure to secure your spot before 11 PM! ❷ Navy Pier Midnight Celebration Classic event upgraded! A 15-minute extended midnight fireworks show 🎆 with custom music, plus a massive dance party for 3,000 people. At night, a skyscraper was brightly lit and outlined the majestic skyline. The pointed roof of the tall building shines like a searchlight. On the streets of Chicago, there are old and new buildings with different shapes.  Time: Chicago sees the best night scenes, but the time is short, the most beautiful moment around five o'clock

Frank Lloyd Wright is a famous architect in American history. Chicago and the nearby Oak Park are the best places to learn about his architecture, because he left his most works. Located in Oak Park is his former home and studio, and Dana Thomas House in Springfield is one of his masterpieces. I want to visit people who are impressed with his distinctive design style. He is good at using geometric figures and lines. The unique Wright art glass will have a wonderful chemical reaction with the sun.

We were able to explore downtown, Oak Park, Pilsen, Chinatown, Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Ukrainian Village and more largely using public transportation. 👟 Wear comfortable shoes. Chicago is an amazing walking city, but the steps add up VERY quickly. 🚤 Book popular experiences in advance, especially architecture cruises, the Frank Lloyd Wright Home & Studio, and special museum exhibitions. 🌡️ Prepare for summer heat. Bring water, sunscreen, and a portable fan—especially for outdoor attractions and waiting to board tours. 🏘️ Leave downtown! Some of our favorite experiences were in Chicago’s neighborhoods. Pilsen, Chinatown, Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Ukrainian Village, and Oak Park each felt completely different. 🍴 Come hungry. Chicago has so much more to try beyond deep dish and hot dogs. Make room for jibaritos, ramen, tacos, Thai food, bakeries, matcha, and plenty of desserts! 📸 Keep your camera ready. Between the skyline, Chicago River, architecture, murals, CTA trains, neighborhoods, and lakefront, there are incredible photo opportunities everywhere.

For Day 4, explore the neighborhoods of Lincoln Park and Lakeview East! 🌿🏙️ This is a perfect Chicago day if you want a mix of something unusual, great neighborhood food, LGBTQ+ history, beautiful parks, and plenty of opportunities to simply walk around and experience the city outside of the biggest tourist attractions. 🩺 Start at the International Museum of Surgical Science Begin the morning with one of Chicago’s more unusual museums: the International Museum of Surgical Science! The museum explores the fascinating history of medicine, surgery, and doctors throughout the centuries, with exhibits covering how medical knowledge, technology, and surgical practices have evolved over time. It’s especially worth visiting if you’re interested in medicine, science, or just slightly unusual museums! 🩻🧠 🚌 Ride up Clark Street & explore the neighborhood From the museum, hop on a bus heading north along Clark Street toward Lakeview. Honestly, even the bus ride is part of the experience! Clark Street is packed with shops, restaurants, cafés, bars, and people, and it was incredibly lively when we visited. ♻️ Thrifters: keep your eyes open! One thing we noticed throughout Chicago was just how many thrift, vintage, consignment, and secondhand stores there are. If you enjoy thrifting, leave some extra time to pop into a few as you explore the neighborhoods. You never know what you’ll find! 👕💿🛍️ 🇹🇭 Lunch at Tuk Tuk Thai Isan Street Food Stop for lunch at Tuk Tuk Thai Isan Street Food, which has been recognized as one of Chicago’s great Thai restaurants. There are tons of options to choose from, the service was wonderful, and most importantly, the food was DELICIOUS. 🌶️🥢 🌈 OPTION 1: Explore LGBTQ+ Chicago & The Legacy Walk After lunch, LGBTQ+ travelers — or anyone interested in queer history — can head toward North Halsted Street and explore The Legacy Walk. Along the street, you’ll find a series of plaques highlighting important LGBTQ+ figures and their contributions to history and culture. 🏳️🌈 Give yourself time to actually stop and read them! You can continue walking around afterward and experience the surrounding neighborhood, one of the most visibly LGBTQ+-friendly areas of Chicago. 🌈 🌳 OPTION 2: Spend the afternoon in Lincoln Park If you’d rather spend the afternoon surrounded by nature, head east toward Lincoln Park itself! There’s SO much packed into this enormous green space that you could easily spend the rest of the afternoon here. 🦋 Visit the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum for exhibits focused on nature and the environment. 🦁 Explore the Lincoln Park Zoo, an amazing FREE zoo right in the middle of the city! 🍯 Find the Peoples Gas Education Pavilion, better known as The Honeycomb, one of the park’s coolest structures and an amazing spot for photos. 🌾 And definitely walk around the Nature Boardwalk, where the pond, skyline, greenery, and Honeycomb create some absolutely gorgeous views. 📸 If the weather is nice, this whole area is a wonderful place to slow down after several busy days of sightseeing. 🍗 Come HUNGRY for dinner at Yardbird For dinner, head to Yardbird for some seriously delicious Southern comfort food! The portions here are MASSIVE, so arrive hungry. 🍗🧇 The menu is full of rich, comforting dishes that make for a very satisfying final big meal in Chicago. 🎭 See the iconic Chicago Theatre sign Before the night ends, stop by the Chicago Theatre and get a photo underneath its famous vertical CHICAGO marquee! ✨ It’s one of those classic city landmarks that looks fantastic in photos, especially once the sign is illuminated at night. 🌮🍦 Finish with a Tacolato at Dessert Dealer Obviously, there’s still room for dessert. We headed to Dessert Dealer to try their Tacolatos — and these things are HUGE. 😳 Think of a taco-inspired dessert absolutely loaded with ice cream and toppings. They’re sweet, messy, over-the-top, and so much fun to eat. Definitely grab some napkins before you begin! 😂🍦 ✨ DAY 4 COMPLETE! ✨ This itinerary is a great way to experience a more relaxed, neighborhood-focused side of Chicago. Explore the history of medicine 🩺, ride through bustling Clark Street 🚌, eat some amazing Thai food 🇹🇭, discover Chicago’s LGBTQ+ history 🌈, wander through one of the city’s most beautiful parks 🌿, and finish the night with comfort food and an enormous dessert. 📸 Tip: If you love photography, give yourself extra time around the Nature Boardwalk and Honeycomb. For Day 3, venture beyond downtown Chicago and spend the day exploring three completely different neighborhoods and areas: Oak Park, Pilsen, and Chinatown! 🏡🎨🏮 This itinerary is perfect if you love architecture, local food, art, neighborhood exploring, and discovering parts of Chicago with completely different personalities. Plus, you can do the entire day using public transit! 🚇 🥐 Take the Green Line to Oak Park & start at Broken Tart Start your morning by hopping on the CTA Green Line and heading west to Oak Park. First stop: Broken Tart, an absolutely adorable neighborhood bakery and café. Everything we tried was incredible, but I especially recommend the biscuits, banana bread, or cookies. Honestly, you really can’t go wrong here! 🍪🍌 It’s the perfect cozy start before a morning of architecture and exploring. 🏡 Tour the Frank Lloyd Wright Home & Studio After breakfast, walk over to the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio for a guided tour! Even if you’re not an architecture expert, this is such an interesting experience. You’ll learn about Frank Lloyd Wright’s life and career while actually walking through the home and studio where he lived, experimented with design, and developed some of the ideas that would define his work. There are so many beautiful architectural details to notice throughout the house, so take your time looking around! ✨ 🎁 And definitely stop in the gift shop afterward. There were tons of beautiful and surprisingly well-priced gifts and souvenirs. 🏘️ Take an architecture walk through Oak Park Before leaving, spend a little time walking around the surrounding neighborhood. Oak Park has an incredible concentration of homes designed or remodeled by Frank Lloyd Wright, so the architecture tour doesn’t have to end when you leave his studio! Just remember that these are real homes where people actually live, so admire and photograph them respectfully. 📸 🌮 Next stop: Pilsen! For the second part of the day, make your way to Pilsen, one of Chicago’s most vibrant Mexican-American neighborhoods. Come hungry because your first stop should be Carniceria Maribel for some incredibly delicious and authentic Mexican food. 🇲🇽 This food stop is in the back of a bodega, so don’t be afraid or back out when you walk in and don’t see it. Just keep walking to the back and soon you’ll be greeted with an amazing smell! 🌮 GET THE TACOS. They’re packed with flavor and absolutely worth the trip! 🎨 Visit the National Museum of Mexican Art After lunch, head over to the National Museum of Mexican Art, one of my biggest recommendations in Pilsen. Best of all: admission is FREE! 🙌 The museum showcases an incredible collection of artwork by Mexican artists and art exploring Mexican identity, history, culture, and experiences in both Mexico and the United States. It’s a wonderful cultural stop and easily worth fitting into your Chicago itinerary. 🖼️ Explore Pilsen’s murals & street art Don’t immediately leave after the museum! Part of the fun of visiting Pilsen is simply walking around and seeing the neighborhood itself. Keep an eye out for the colorful murals and street art covering buildings, walls, and viaducts throughout the area. 🎨📸 There are beautiful works everywhere, so give yourself some time to wander! 🏮 Finish the day in Chicago’s Chinatown For the final part of the day, head to Chinatown! 🚇 CTA tip: If you’re taking the Red Line south, check whether there’s a baseball game happening that day. The trains can get VERY crowded with fans heading toward the stadium! 🥢 Put your name down at Chubby Skewers FIRST If you’re planning to eat at Chubby Skewers, make this your first stop when you arrive in Chinatown. There WILL probably be a wait. We waited around 1 hour and 45 minutes for our table! 😳 But don’t let that scare you away. Put your name down immediately and use the wait as your built-in Chinatown exploration time. And yes — I thought it was worth the wait! 🍢 The ingredients were great quality, there’s a huge variety to choose from, and the different spice mixes and seasonings were SO flavorful. 🛍️ Explore Chinatown while you wait Now you have the perfect excuse to wander! Explore the plazas, side streets, shops, bakeries, restaurants, and drink spots throughout Chinatown. Some fun places to check out include The Midi, Ichiban Candy & Snacks, and Joy Yee. 🧋🍬 📸 Don’t forget to look UP! Head to the second level of Chinatown Square for some fantastic photo opportunities. The elevated walkways give you great perspectives looking down into the alleys and plaza, and you can also get some really cool urban shots incorporating the Chicago skyline, CTA station, and elevated train tracks. 🚇🏙️ Chinatown is especially fun to photograph as the sun starts going down and everything begins lighting up! 🍢 Finally, dinner at Chubby Skewers! Once your table is ready, head back for dinner and start ordering! One of the best things about this restaurant is the variety, so it’s a great opportunity to order lots of different skewers for the table and try a little bit of everything. The seasoning makes it especially memorable. 🌶️🥢 🍵 End with dessert at Matcha En You can’t end the night without dessert! Head to Matcha En for a selection of delicious matcha drinks and Japanese-inspired sweets. 🍵💚 If you can’t decide what to order, go for the taiyaki! 🐟 It’s the perfect sweet ending after a long day of exploring. ✨ DAY 3 COMPLETE! ✨ This was one of my favorite ways to experience how diverse Chicago and the surrounding area can be. In a single day, you can go from the quiet, architecture-filled streets of Oak Park 🏡 to the colorful murals and Mexican-American culture of Pilsen 🎨🇲🇽 and finally the food, shops, lights, and energy of Chinatown 🏮🥢. 🚇 Tip: This itinerary covers a LOT of ground, so use the CTA whenever possible and wear comfortable shoes. Ready to explore beyond the usual Chicago tourist spots? 👀 Day 2 is all about dinosaurs, Pokémon, incredible neighborhood food, quirky shops, horror, taxidermy, local bakeries, and some genuine hidden gems. This is a GREAT itinerary if you want to see a completely different side of Chicago! 🏙️ 🍵 Start with matcha at Foxtrot Market Start the morning in River North with a matcha from Foxtrot Market before hopping on the CTA and heading south toward Museum Campus. 🦖 Spend the morning at the Field Museum Give yourself PLENTY of time for the Field Museum because this place is absolutely massive. You could easily spend hours wandering through its exhibits. Some highlights include Ancient Americas, The Changing Face of Science, Regenstein Halls of the Pacific, Abbott Hall of Conservation: Restoring Earth, Native Truths: Our Voices, Our Stories, and the incredible Griffin Halls of Evolving Planet, where you’ll find Chicago icon SUE the T. rex! 🦖 And, of course… Pokémon. ⚡️ The Pokémon Fossil Museum is a must for Pokémon fans. It uses Pokémon alongside real-world fossils to teach you about paleontology, fossilization, and excavation. Seeing Pokémon fossils compared with actual prehistoric specimens is such a fun concept! 🎟️ Important: You’ll need a separate timed ticket, so BOOK IN ADVANCE! Even with limited admission, the exhibit space itself is fairly small and can get crowded — especially with lots of excited kids — but it’s absolutely worth checking out. 🍌 Take the CTA to Ukrainian Village for a jibarito Now for one of my favorite food discoveries of the trip: Smash Jibarito! A jibarito replaces the bread of a traditional sandwich with crispy fried plantains, and the result is delicious. 🤤 The jibarito here was one of the best and most interesting takes on a “burger” I’ve ever had. If you want to try something you probably aren’t eating every day back home, PUT THIS ON YOUR LIST. 💩 Make a pilgrimage to the St Fountain Yes. The St Fountain. 😂 This is absolutely a “we’re nearby, so why not?” attraction, but that’s exactly what makes it fun. Stop by, take your obligatory photo, send it to your friends with zero context, and continue on your way. 🥐 Try Kasama… if you planned ahead! The acclaimed Filipino bakery and restaurant Kasama is right around the corner. If this is high on your list, plan ahead! We arrived to find a line stretching down the street and unfortunately had to skip it. 😭 🥧 Get a local slice at Hoosier Mama Pie Company Time for first dessert! Hoosier Mama Pie Company has tons of delicious and often seasonal flavors. It feels like the kind of neighborhood bakery you hope to stumble across while traveling, so grab a slice and see what’s available that day. 🥧 🚇 Find the perfect souvenir at Transit Tees Public transit nerds, this one is for you. 🚇 Transit Tees has tons of Chicago-inspired designs and CTA-themed merch that make for MUCH more interesting keepsakes than another generic Chicago magnet. 🥐 Make another bakery stop at Mindy’s Still capable of eating? Excellent. Stop at Mindy’s Bakery for another sweet treat. 🍪 If you happen to visit toward the end of the day, check out the remaining pastry selection — we found pastries discounted 50% before closing, which made this stop even sweeter. 🔪 Enter horror heaven at The Brewed Horror fans NEED to check out The Brewed. ☕️🩸 This horror-themed café is packed with creepy decor and themed drinks, making it one of the coolest coffee shops we found in Chicago. 💿 Browse Bric-a-Brac Records Conveniently, Bric-a-Brac Records is right next door! The Insect Asylum is a taxidermy museum filled with fascinating specimens, insects, bones, oddities, and even LIVE animals. 🦎🕷️🐢 We saw a tortoise, birds, iguanas, tarantulas, and tons of incredible taxidermy. Tickets were $25 when we visited, and somehow we had the entire museum to ourselves for about an hour! It was peaceful, fascinating, a little bizarre, and the perfect escape from the Chicago summer heat. Easily one of the biggest hidden gems of the trip. 💯 🍜 Dinner at Akahoshi Ramen After all that exploring, head to Akahoshi Ramen for dinner. My order: Aburasoba + Extra Shio Koji Chicken Breast. The noodles were insanely flavorful and the chicken was SO good. This was easily one of my favorite meals of the day and a fantastic way to end an afternoon of exploring the neighborhoods. 🍦 Dessert at Pretty Cool Ice Cream Except we’re obviously not actually done eating. Right across the street is Pretty Cool Ice Cream, an adorable shop specializing in creative ice cream bars! I got the Caramel Horchata Crunch and it was to die for. 🍦 🎬 BONUS: End the night with a 4DX movie Still have energy? Head to Regal City North and see something in 4DX! 🎥💨💦 If you’ve never experienced one, 4DX turns the movie into basically a theme park ride with moving seats and physical effects synchronized with what’s happening on screen. It’s a chaotic and extremely fun way to end the night. ✨ DAY 2 COMPLETE! ✨ This day takes you away from some of the biggest downtown attractions and into a completely different Chicago — incredible neighborhood restaurants, independent businesses, weird roadside-style attractions, horror, museums, and some of the best food of the trip. 🚇 Tip: The CTA makes this itinerary very doable without a car, but you’ll be moving through several different neighborhoods, so give yourself plenty of time and don’t feel like you need to hit every single stop. Had a great time with my wife and daughter. We tried the 4D cinema, which my little one really enjoyed, though the air conditioning in the room was too strong. The jeep safari was amazing, especially stopping among the zebras and ostriches, which you could almost touch. However, I didn’t enjoy the big cats section; their cages seemed too small, and the animals looked quite depressed. The bird area was beautiful, but unfortunately, the track ride was closed for maintenance. Staff were kind, especially the bus driver. Overall, a nice experience.

On a bright Saturday morning in early June, the park was bustling. I was attempting to get a clear reflection shot of the Chicago skyline without any people in the frame, a nearly impossible task. I was crouched low, trying to wipe a smudge off the stainless-steel surface with my shirt sleeve, which was doing more harm than good. A man standing nearby, who had just finished setting up his own tripod, noticed my struggle. Without a word, he reached into his camera bag, pulled out a specialized microfiber cloth, and leaned over to gently buff the exact spot I was pointing at. "The oils from your skin will streak it," he explained quietly. "And shirts are too abrasive. Use this." He then offered a piece of advice that changed my entire approach to photographing the sculpture: "Wait for the clouds. The reflections pop more when the light is diffused." He shared that while many tourists try to touch the Bean constantly, the city actually cleans it nightly with a specialized solution, but during the day, a clean microfiber cloth is a photographer's best friend. He also pointed out that the southern side of the sculpture, facing the AT&T Plaza, often has fewer people clustered around it compared to the northern entrance. We talked about the best times to shoot—he swore by the "blue hour," just after sunset, when the city lights reflect with a deep, rich contrast. His gesture wasn't just helpful; it was an act of professional courtesy that acknowledged our shared goal of capturing the art. We had an amazing afternoon with these wild animals. The trip wasn't planned; we decided to go after seeing an advertisement. Once there, we got the opportunity to stroke and touch the big cats. It's great that you can choose which ones you want to interact with. You get ten minutes with each animal you select, and the photos they provide are fantastic.

This is a free zoo located about 10-15 minutes by bus from downtown Chicago. The bus stop is right in front of the entrance, making it very easy to access from downtown. The zoo is spacious, allowing you to see giraffes, rhinos, polar bears, lions, and other animals up close. The staff were also very friendly; no matter which area you went to, a staff member in that area would approach you and readily answer any questions you had. Just in time for Thanksgiving, Chicago received its second snowfall of the winter; heavy snow, a rarity in Beijing, seems to be the norm here. Having not run outdoors for several days due to the cold, and not wanting to become lazy, I braved the snow this morning, fully bundled up. Most of the city's sidewalks were covered in ice and snow, making snow removal ineffective. My shoes and socks were soaked after less than 2k. My original plan was a 20k LSD (long slow distance), but the lakeside track north of Ohio Street Beach was closed due to heavy snow (p3). It seemed like fate, so I strolled to 9k and headed home. Running in the snow was quite fun. It was the first time I'd seen the lakeshore beach transformed into a "snow beach" (p4). Grant Park had large, thick patches of snow perfect for frolicking. I couldn't resist lying back in the snow, leaving a snow pit in the same pose as when I encountered a snowman (p5). Of course, there were also plenty of animal tracks—p6 shows two sets of dog paw prints (even in heavy snow, pet owners have to go out for a walk), and p7 shows the geese, a regular sight on the shores of Lake Michigan. I happened to see that the Christmas market downstairs from my apartment didn't have a line (the previous two days were peak holiday season, with lines stretching all the way to the next block...), so I decided to check it out. The snow-covered eaves added to the "winter Christmas" feel (p8), proving that snow is what gives Christmas markets their soul. Note that they only accept cash, but thankfully I'm used to carrying some with me these days. I was wearing running clothes, and after a short while, I got cold, so I bought a hot cocoa (p9), which warmed me up nicely. The cup came with a 2025 Christmas special edition, which I could take home; the cup's design and heart shape were quite unique.
