In northern China lies the autonomous region of Ningxia which mostly characterised by sweeping sand dunes that go on for miles! I’ve been twice (January and June). In January, most of the desert and fresh water is completely frozen over which is quite surreal for a desert. 4X4 cars were able to drive over the oasis because it was so solidly frozen. In the summer, it can become quite warm but still comfortable enough to camp overnight. There are camel rides available although we chose to hike. The Great Wall of China and the Yellow River is a place that you can’t miss if you are in the city of Zhongwei. The recommended sightseeing time is half an hour or maximum one hour. This place is an impressive archeological gem, its facade is beautiful and its reconstruction from ruin was a total success. Try not to miss out the sunset as this Great Wall has a great panoramic view to the Yellow river. Plan accordingly to get a good spot to take some photographs. Take a sleeper train to the little-travelled city of Yinchuan in Ningxia and explore China’s main wine region, where you can actually find drinkable wine! (Our goal of the trip). The main wineries are Xige and Silver Heights, which also have accommodation. Ningxia also has ancient ruins to explore (Western Xia Tombs and Helanshan) as well as the Tengger Desert where you can sleep in glamping yurts. Bring the wine you purchase at the wineries and make it a party!

In the distant Gansu, the most impressive impression is the slightly deserted Gobi Desert in the northwest. Although, I can't say exactly what the Gobi Desert and the Gobi Desert really look like. Just came to Gansu to start from Lanzhou, and showed me a colorful Gansu, because Gansu's geographical span is large, it is actually richer than I expected. This trip will not go too far into the conventional scenic spot, another kind goes deep into Gansu, but today there is still a chance to have a quick contact with the Tengger Desert.

I am increasingly fond of this way of exploring and unlocking the lifestyles of different cities. I know we cannot choose the length of our lives, but I want to make my life broader and broader. I haven’t deeply specialized in any one field; I just want to experience different things. In recent years, I have also fallen in love with skiing, enjoy spending time in cinemas, have taken up hiking, and love climbing mountains. The fruit and flower wine in the set meal is also incredibly photogenic; my friends were snapping photos non-stop! Itinerary Planning Introduction: The Five Lakes Traverse refers to crossing five lakes in the Tengger Desert (6 or 7 lakes are also possible, the route can be customized). There are two ways to traverse: hiking (over 50 kilometers) and by off-road vehicle. Hiking takes 2-3 days; I will mainly share the off-road vehicle method. Trip Time: The entire Five Lakes Traverse takes approximately 3-4 hours. Transportation: Self-driving + Chartered Car: Drive to the entrance to the desert via the Dream Desert Highway, then transfer to an off-road vehicle to enter the desert. Off-season price is 900 RMB per vehicle. Chartered Car: Many drivers in the Tengger Desert can pick you up from the high-speed rail station or airport, but the price will be higher. You can choose to land in Yinchuan or Wuhai; both cities are great for fun and delicious food! Attraction Introduction Ulan Lake: The iconic lake of Tengger. From July to September each year, the high temperatures cause microorganisms in the lake water to multiply rapidly, turning the water red. From the air, it resembles a powerful heart. A drone is a must! Aerial views reveal the lake's heart-shaped waters, a striking contrast of red and white salt flats. Hailüqi Lake: A yellow salt lake with herds of cattle and sheep grazing along its shores, reminiscent of a desert pasture. Capture the animals and lake scenery with a telephoto lens; the sunset's light and shadow are breathtaking. Camel Lake: A pink lake with a meadow in its center, exuding a youthful charm. Even still photos are possible; wear light-colored clothing and stand by the lake to capture the pink reflection. Guitar Lake: Resembling a giant guitar from the air, hence its name. Rich in sulfides, it has an orange-yellow hue. Guitar Lake is also the only lake where birds were photographed. Egg Yolk Lake: Composed of numerous small ponds, its color gradually turns orange-yellow, resembling an egg yolk, during July and August due to increased evaporation, hence its name. Tips: 1. Aerial photography is key! A trip to Wulan Lake and Camel Lake without aerial shots is practically a wasted trip. 2. Clothing: A long red/white/black dress or a windbreaker—sun protection and great photos! If you're sun-resistant, you can wear short sleeves, shorts, and go barefoot like I do, but the sand gets very hot under the sun. 3. Motion sickness prevention: Take motion sickness medication before departure; desert off-roading is like a roller coaster. 4. Signal: Except for Ulan Lake, there is no signal throughout the entire route.

🏔 Stayed at a stunning sandstone-colored hotel in Yinchuan, Ningxia, backed by Helan Mountain 📍 Location: Anmo Hotel, Zhongwei, Ningxia (recommended to drive or take a taxi) If you want to find a quiet place for a secluded weekend, this is a great choice. The hotel has its own vineyard and wine cellar, with a sandstone-colored exterior echoing the Helan Mountain landscape, and the interior incorporates many wine elements. The spiral staircase in the lobby resembles a wine bottle opener. The large terrace outside the second-floor restaurant is great for photos, with a distant view of the Han Meilin Art Museum at the foot of Helan Mountain. 🛁 Room: A standalone two-story villa-style room. I chose the second-floor Helan Mountain view king room, which has a large balcony and floor-to-ceiling glass, allowing you to lie in bed and look at Helan Mountain. The room is quite spacious and fully equipped, with Liu Sanduo Eight Treasures Tea available for brewing. As an art student walking into the desert🏜️, I found an art museum hidden in the desert. Because I was going to Gansu for my sister's wedding during the National Day holiday, I planned a trip to Ningxia to explore the desert using Xiaohongshu for research. I accidentally discovered an art museum still under construction. There was a staff lady at the entrance. When she learned we came from Sichuan, she opened the small gate for me to go in and take photos but reminded us not to step on the sand dunes on either side of the road as it would affect the aesthetics. Overall, the photo opportunities were excellent. I probably stayed inside for about half an hour. Since the schedule was tight, we booked a desert hotel next to the MILIAN Desert Art Museum. We went to Zhongwei city center for a stroll at noon, then headed to the desert scenic area to play. After playing in the desert, it was just a 10-minute drive to get there.
