In northern China lies the autonomous region of Ningxia which mostly characterised by sweeping sand dunes that go on for miles! I’ve been twice (January and June). In January, most of the desert and fresh water is completely frozen over which is quite surreal for a desert. 4X4 cars were able to drive over the oasis because it was so solidly frozen. In the summer, it can become quite warm but still comfortable enough to camp overnight. There are camel rides available although we chose to hike. Away from the same dunes, you can find wine vineyards and pretty mountains. A great place for nature lovers #ningxia #mountainview #deserts #china

This place is an impressive archeological gem, its facade is beautiful and its reconstruction from ruin was a total success. Take a sleeper train to the little-travelled city of Yinchuan in Ningxia and explore China’s main wine region, where you can actually find drinkable wine! (Our goal of the trip). The main wineries are Xige and Silver Heights, which also have accommodation. Friends, I really went all out this time! To see the millennium-old Buddha statues hidden on the cliffs with my own eyes, I went straight to the Xumi Mountain Grottoes hiking trail in Ningxia! This is not an ordinary scenic tour; it’s a real mountain climbing challenge combined with a cultural knockout—legs trembling from exhaustion but totally worth the ticket price! Below, I’m sharing my hard-earned experience in full, so be sure to save this hardcore guide! Transportation First, the Xumi Mountain Grottoes are not in the city! They are about 55 kilometers northwest of Guyuan City, Ningxia, in the mountains. I started from downtown Guyuan and strongly recommend staying overnight in Guyuan or Sanying Town (which is closer). ✅ For self-drivers: Navigate directly to “Xumi Mountain Grottoes Visitor Center.” The parking lot is large and costs 10 yuan/day. But here’s the key! The grotto clusters are scattered on the cliffs, and the main trailhead is near the “Great Buddha Tower.” Make sure to park in the right spot to avoid unnecessary walking. The mountain roads are winding, so a high-clearance vehicle is recommended. ✅ For non-drivers: Take the “Guyuan-Sanying” shuttle bus from Guyuan Bus Station (about 15 yuan, 1 hour). After arriving in Sanying, take a taxi to the scenic area (about 30 yuan, remember to keep the driver’s number for the return trip!). You must take the scenic area shuttle bus (15 yuan round trip) from the visitor center to the hiking start point; otherwise, you’ll have to walk 40 minutes along a dull road. ⚠️ Important: Start early! The scenic area opens at 8:30 AM, but I left Guyuan at 7 AM to have plenty of hiking time. The mountain tends to get windy in the afternoon, so descending early is safer. The best part is they can pack breakfast (steamed bun, egg, and porridge for 10 yuan), saving you time. Standard rooms are about 120 yuan/night, excellent value. If you want a wilder experience, check if the scenic area has tent campsites (they were planning them when I visited), but the mountain has big temperature swings day and night, so choose carefully if inexperienced. ❌ Not recommended to stay in Guyuan city; the morning commute wastes too much time and you won’t enjoy the trip fully. Must-Visit Checklist (Hiking Route Difficulty Levels) Xumi Mountain is not just a single cave but over 150 grottoes scattered across 5 cliffs! The hiking routes connect these highlights in a challenge! 1️⃣ 【Beginner】Great Buddha Tower Trail (Must-see!) Start at the shuttle bus endpoint, climb 15 minutes up stone steps to see the 20.6-meter tall Tang Dynasty Maitreya Buddha! This is Xumi Mountain’s symbol, stunning under the blue sky. Suitable for everyone with plenty of photo spots. 2️⃣ 【Intermediate】Descendants Palace - Yuanguang Temple Loop (Core Challenge!) From the left side of the Great Buddha Tower, this is the main hiking route. First, climb a zigzag steep slope (about 40 minutes, 200 meters elevation) to Descendants Palace, where grottoes are dense and beautifully styled in Northern Wei fashion. Continue to Yuanguang Temple; the trail narrows but the views are spectacular, overlooking the entire red sandstone valley. The loop is about 3 km and takes 3 hours with slow walking and photos. 3️⃣ 【Advanced】Xiangguo Temple - Peach Blossom Cave Exploration (Physical Test!) This route is wilder! From the Yuanguang Temple fork, go deeper. The path to Xiangguo Temple is almost carved into the mountainside, with some sections requiring hands and feet (wear non-slip shoes!). Peach Blossom Cave has well-preserved Northern Zhou murals, fewer people, and feels like an adventure treasure hunt. This round trip adds at least 2 more hours. 4️⃣ 【Hidden】Pine Tree Hollow - Zen Pagoda Peak (Sea of Clouds Sanctuary!) If you still have energy, ask staff about the small trail to Pine Tree Hollow (not obvious). Climb about 500 meters elevation to near Zen Pagoda Peak, the highest point at about 2100 meters. I was lucky to see a post-rain sea of clouds, with Buddha statues faintly visible in the mist—a divine scene! But the path is slippery and steep, so assess your stamina; the round trip takes 4 hours. 5️⃣ 【Cultural】Grotto Museum (Rest Stop) Don’t miss the free museum at the entrance after descending! It has many artifacts and reconstructed caves, helping you connect the fragmented knowledge you just saw and instantly deepen your understanding. Tips (Life-saving Practical Version) 1. Gear is king! Hiking boots (non-slip!), windproof jacket, quick-dry base layers, and a backpack are essentials. Mountain weather changes fast—I experienced sun, wind, and rain all in one day. 2. Bring enough supplies! There’s only a small shop at the entrance. I carried 2 liters of water, energy bars, chocolate, and bread. Have lunch on the mountain and be sure to pack out all trash! 3. Safety first! Some grotto railings are low, so don’t get too distracted taking photos. Start descending after 4 PM as it gets dark with no lighting. Download the trail on the “Two Steps” app beforehand, bring a power bank and a survival whistle (hope you won’t need it). 4. Be respectful!
