In the decades after the earthquake, the town was rebuilt in typical Sicilian Baroque style. The exteriors of the buildings are exquisite and gorgeous, full of classical style. It was later listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site. Many buildings are constructed using sandy yellow tuff, which gives the town a honey-gold hue when the sun shines on it. Southern Italy in August is truly hot, but there is so much to do. I spent a full week in Sicily, covering everything from the east coast to the south coast and the interior, and today I am sharing it all with you. This is not just a superficial "take a photo and leave" account. It is an itinerary I put together after learning the hard way, getting sunburned, and taking some wrong turns. · — ① The right way to experience Taormina Do not go during the day. Take my advice and head up the mountain after 4:00 PM. In August, it is 37–38°C during the day, and the Greek Theatre has no shade—it is scorching. After 4:30 PM, the light turns honey-colored. Tickets for the theatre are €13. Standing on stone steps that are over 2,000 years old, with Mount Etna directly in front of you and the Ionian Sea at your feet, the composition is divine. From Catania Airport to Taormina, there are direct intercity buses in 2026 that take 50 minutes and cost about €8 one way. You do not need to drive up the mountain and look for parking (parking in town is extremely difficult, and spots are hard to find during peak season). ② Syracuse: Ortigia Old Town It is a 1 hour and 10 minute drive south from Taormina. Ortigia Island is the heart of Syracuse. The island is not large, and you can walk around it in two hours. The cathedral, converted from the Temple of Athena, is a must-see; tickets are €8. The Doric columns embedded in the Baroque facade are enough to make architecture students cry. The ruins of the Temple of Apollo are free and located right next to the bridge entering the island. It is best to go in the evening, when the stones are filled with locals playing music and chatting. ③ Noto: The Baroque City Drive another 40 minutes south. The entire city was rebuilt after the great earthquake of 1693 using uniform golden limestone. Both sides of Corso Vittorio Emanuele are lined with churches and noble palaces; walking through it is like visiting an open-air architecture exhibition. The "Infiorata" (Flower Festival) takes place on the second weekend of August. The whole street is covered in flowers. In 2026, it was the week of August 9, which I happened to catch. It is free. ④ Agrigento: Valley of the Temples Drive 2 hours west from Noto. Seven ancient Greek temple ruins are lined up along the ridge. The Temple of Concordia is the best preserved. Tickets are €12 and include the archaeological museum. I recommend entering the park at 5:30 PM and staying until sunset. When the temples turn into silhouettes, the whole valley glows purple. The park is large, so allow at least three hours and wear sneakers. ⑤ The interior: Valleys and wheat fields After finishing the coastline, I turned into the center of the island. This is a place most tourists do not visit. The rolling hills are covered in golden wheat fields and rows of olive trees, with the occasional solitary stone farmhouse appearing along the road. I rested at a family-run farmhouse that has been operating for generations. The stone house was surrounded by wheat fields, and it was so quiet that all I could hear were the cicadas and the wind passing through the wheat ears. The owner showed me their mill and olive oil press. That sense of stability, of generations guarding the same piece of land, touched my heart more than any viral tourist attraction. · — ⑥ August survival guide (key points) → Sun protection: SPF 50+. The UV index in Sicily in August is consistently 11. If you do not apply it, you will peel. → Pace: Plan activities for before 10:00 AM and after 5:00 PM. During the three hours in between, find an air-conditioned church or museum to hide in. → Driving: The A19 and SS121 are main roads and are fine, but many country roads are single-lane. You need to yield to each other when passing. Do not rush. → Water: Carry a 1.5L water bottle. Many small town squares have free drinking fountains (fontanella). The water quality is fine, so you can fill up directly. → Clothing: Linen or cotton-linen blends. Choose lighter colors; dark clothes will be soaked through in five minutes under the sun. → Cash: Many restaurants and gas stations in inland towns only accept cash. Keep €50 in small change. It will not hurt. · — One last thing: Southern Italy is not a "budget version of Tuscany." It has its own narrative logic. The sea is intense, the light is scorching, the stones are old, and the people are slow-paced. You have to tune yourself to that frequency for it to open up to you. Today, Noto has transformed into a city "reborn from the ashes." The 7.4-magnitude earthquake in 1693 destroyed the old city of Noto. After the disaster, the local residents and architects made a visionary decision to rebuild a new city about 10 kilometers away from the ruins on a limestone plateau, following the ideal city planning of the Enlightenment era. They used the then-emerging late Baroque style, with most buildings constructed from the local honey-colored limestone. When we visited last year in the afternoon, the sunlight shining on the buildings turned the entire town into a warm golden hue. Noto is small, and all the attractions are concentrated along both sides of the main street, Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Half a day is enough to leisurely walk the entire route.
