In 1148, King Aongso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, defeated the Moors who had ruled this place for a long time and took over the city. And in 1201, it is said that he gave this city to Queen Ureca as a wedding gift. There is an interesting anecdote that many kings gave this city to their queens until the 16th century, and this city earned the nickname of the Queen's City. Ginger wine is famous in Obidos! Far from the hustle and bustle of the big city, it offers only the peaceful tranquility enclosed by its ancient walls. If you love places rich in history and enjoy snapping Instagram-worthy photos, this little town will have you clicking your shutter non-stop! There is a sweet history behind this town. Back in 1282, King Dinis I of Portugal brought his fiancée, Queen Isabel, to visit. She fell in love with the beautiful town at first sight. Seeing this, the King grandly gifted her the entire town of Óbidos as a wedding present! From then on, it became a Portuguese royal tradition: successive kings would present this town to their queens as a dowry. This ultimate royal romance ensures that the ancient town still exudes a sweet, romantic atmosphere to this day. The town has preserved its medieval, maze-like cobblestone streets, lined with rows of traditional pure white houses. What makes them truly special is that the corners, window frames, and doorways of these white houses are painted in vibrant shades of bright yellow and royal blue. Yellow: In local tradition, it represents warding off evil spirits and bringing good luck. Blue: Symbolizes nobility and purity. Walking the City Walls: If you're feeling adventurous, you can walk along the ancient walls that encircle the town. Looking down from above offers an incredible panoramic view of the town's terracotta roofs and the surrounding countryside (just be careful when taking photos, as there are no handrails!). In terms of restaurants yes, there is not much varieties. However there is an old-fashion bakery offering some sort of their in-house bread and pastries which are very different from those commercial things (which taste all the same). I tried a scone-like bread which they named it “olive oil walnut honey bread”. It has different layers of taste and texture, aroma of olive oil was not strong but it makes the “bread” not dry at all. Be reminded that it was very dense (like a soda bread) but pair very well with a cup of espresso. Ginja is a typical Cherry wine originated from Obidos. You can buy in bottle or have a taste of it from stores €1.5 and they will serve you with a chocolate-made cup. The wine goes very well with chocolate but personally I found it too sweet. Recommend to have a carry-on rather than luggage when visiting this place. The stone ground is very bumpy and staircase and slopes are all over.

I highly recommend visiting this place. A whole day is definitely enough to explore it all. The atmosphere is fantastic, and you get to experience walking on the city walls. It's a very quick ride from Caldas da Rainha, about 15-20 minutes. However, since there are no railings on the walls, anyone planning to climb them should be mindful of their physical condition.

#europetrip Óbidos is one of Portugal’s oldest towns, founded by Celtic tribes. In Roman times it served as an important port; later it was ruled by the Visigoths and the Moors. Only in the 12th century did King Afonso Henriques firmly establish Portuguese rule here. The town - essentially just a couple of streets with about ten thousand inhabitants - was once an impregnable citadel, which is reflected in its name. The old castle, Castelo de Óbidos, built by the Moors and rebuilt on Afonso Henriques’s orders, still stands. There are no natural freshwater bodies within the fortress; water is obtained from wells, and the oldest city aqueduct dates back to the 16th century. We came by car - there is a large paid parking lot near the entrance. From the entrance, immediately go up the stairs to the right and walk along the fortress walls. To wait out the rain you can sit in a cozy café with good coffee and the traditional pastry pastel. Also visit the atmospheric bookshop housed in a former church. Wander the quiet, narrow streets, then emerge onto the main street with its crowds and shops, where they serve the local specialty Ginja (a cherry liqueur served in chocolate cups). It’s incredibly tasty (though not everywhere). You can stroll along the little street, popping into local shops full of souvenirs for every taste. There are many tourists, but if you turn off the main street onto adjacent lanes you can enjoy a peaceful walk in relative silence.#travel2025

Stepping into the city walls is like entering a medieval fairytale world. 📍Must-see attractions: 1️⃣ Óbidos City Walls: Walk around the ancient city walls for a panoramic view of the white-walled town—absolutely dreamy. 2️⃣ Santa Maria Church: Located in the main square (Praça de Santa Maria), it's the town's most important religious building. 3️⃣ Rua Direita Main Street (lots of souvenir shops and restaurants; be sure to try a glass of Ginja here!) 4️⃣ Livraria de Santiago Bookstore (converted from an old church) 🍒Must-try and buy: · Ginja: Served in a small chocolate cup; drink the liqueur and then eat the cup—super unique! I also bought a few bottles of the award-winning cherry wine to give to friends!❣️ · Obidos City Wall Cups: I saw a kind old lady's stall selling city wall cups, they were so cute! I bought a cup of sangria, it was delicious!
