[Autumn in Obuse, Shinshu] Only available for about a month! Head to Obusedo Main Store in search of the legendary chestnut sweet, "Chestnut Dim Sum Suzaku"!
As autumn approaches, one thing I crave is chestnuts! 🌰 This time, I'd like to introduce "Suzaku," a super-premium chestnut dim sum from Obuse-do in Obuse Town, Nagano Prefecture—a must-try for any chestnut lover!
Incidentally, this is my second time trying it, following last year!
Suzaku has a beautiful appearance, almost like somen or soba noodles! In fact, it's made from fresh, steamed, and strained chestnuts, luxuriously squeezed out without any added sugar.
Because no sugar is used, the moment you put it in your mouth, you're greeted with the rich aroma and flavor of the chestnut itself.
Made using only the chestnut's natural moisture, it's fluffy and melts delicately in your mouth. Hidden inside is a refined sweet chestnut paste, creating a perfect balance when eaten together.
It's only available for a short period each year, from early September to mid-October. It's truly the ultimate chestnut dim sum, only available during this limited time in autumn.
This year, there were Vermilion Bird sculptures in front of the main building and in the courtyard of Obusedo. These are authentic spatial art pieces created by Takesada Shoten, a long-established Kyoto company specializing in bamboo materials and bamboo interiors. The sculptures realistically express the "flexibility" of the Vermilion Bird, and the delicate and beautiful "chestnut paste folds" of the bird are brilliantly recreated by dynamically bending real bamboo (flat-split bamboo).
Recommended as a photo spot. Only those with reservations for the Vermilion Bird experience are allowed in. Alternatively, those staying at the Masuichi Guest House can also enter.
Vermilion Bird merchandise is also sold. There was a vending machine.
❇️ How to reserve a "Vermilion Bird" experience
In the past, long lines forming from early morning were a famous feature, but now, to alleviate congestion, it is "completely reservation-only."
It's recommended to register as a member of the ticket sales site (TicketPay) in advance. Access is concentrated as soon as sales begin, and on some days, tickets sell out in minutes. Setting an alert on your calendar is recommended. I also made a reservation through the Obusedo website immediately on the day tickets went on sale.
You reserve your seats in advance; you cannot choose your seats on-site. There is a strict 45-minute seating rotation system.
Once you pay and reserve, refunds are not available.
It's important to plan your schedule around your Suzaku reservation.
If you don't have a reservation, there are "same-day tickets" available. For the 2026 season, same-day tickets for "Chestnut Dim Sum Suzaku" are for the 12:00 (or 12:15) seating each day. There are only a very limited number of tickets, about 41 per day. If you wait until the last minute, the tickets may already be sold out. If you absolutely want to get a same-day ticket, it's recommended to arrive early and check the situation.
Another trick is to stay at the group's luxury inn, "Masuichi Kyakuden," located right next to Obusedo, on the Suzaku plan; this guarantees you a Suzaku reservation! From 2026, a new accommodation building called "Masuichi House" will open, and it is also included in the Suzaku menu. I stayed there last year and highly recommend it. The quality of the accommodation itself is very high, with a blend of traditional storehouse-style exterior and modern interior, creating a sophisticated hideaway for adults.
Reservations for Masuichi Kyakuden begin six months in advance on the same day (from 9 AM) via phone or the official website. I made my reservation six months in advance.
If you make a reservation, you can enjoy the Suzaku without waiting in line, and it's delicious, so I recommend it. A truly unique chestnut confection ♥
