In late August last year, we spent 4 days driving south along California State Route 1. Starting from San Francisco, passing through Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, Solvang, Santa Barbara, and finally arriving in Los Angeles. We originally thought it would be just an ordinary road trip, but later realized— the true magic of California State Route 1 is how it constantly redefines your imagination of the "coastline." 🌁 Big Sur road closure, but unexpectedly saw a different kind of scenery Because part of Big Sur was closed at the time, we had to detour via Highway 101. We were a bit disappointed at first, but as we drove along, we discovered: Driving along the sea brings coastal romance; driving along the mountains offers a different kind of vastness. Valleys, ranches, golden grassy slopes, rolling mountains in the distance, the view outside the car window felt like a continuous replay of a Western movie. Later, we even felt— this "unplanned" detour became a very special part of the trip. 🌊 To avoid regrets, we drove the southern section again Thinking it over later: we had already come such a long way. Since we didn’t fully drive the northern section, we decided to make up for it by driving the southern section as well. So we started again from San Luis Obispo, driving the southern part of Route 1 from south to north. The result was— we "double drove" Route 1. 😂 But we don’t regret it at all. Because the most charming thing about California State Route 1 is that it never repeats itself. The same road: is different on sunny days and cloudy days; different in the morning and at dusk; the sea looks completely different when driving north or south. Sometimes the sun shines on the cliffside coast✨ sometimes thick fog swallows the mountains and sea🌫️ sometimes you turn a corner and suddenly see the boundless Pacific Ocean. That feeling of "not knowing what you’ll see next" is truly addictive. 🚗 What I love most about Route 1 It’s not a trip where you have to rush to see all the sights. The most comfortable way is: stop when you’re tired of driving. get out when you see a beautiful coast. stay longer if you find a town you like. The scenery along the way isn’t just at the destinations. Often, the most unforgettable moments are: some unnamed stretch of coast, a sunset suddenly shining into the car, and the mountains and sea passing by outside the window just as music plays. As the only elephant seal rookery in the world that is easily accessible, free, and open to the public year-round, it was an incredible opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures up close. Located just seven miles north of San Simeon on Highway 1, we didn’t need any reservations to enjoy the experience. The history of the rookery is remarkable; dating back to the 1700s, these seals were nearly hunted to extinction for their oil-rich blubber, which was used for lamps and lubrication. By the early 1900s, northern elephant seals were thought to be extinct, but thankfully, they were granted protected status in the U.S., allowing their population to recover. Watching the enormous elephant seals lying lazily on the beach was a sight to behold. DAOU sits on its own mountain above Paso Robles, and getting up there tells you something before you even taste the wine: there's a security checkpoint at the bottom, and without a reservation, they don't let you drive up. No exceptions, no walking up to "just take a look." Book ahead, or don't go. What's actually on top of that mountain is a genuinely unlikely story. Brothers Georges and Daniel Daou emigrated from Lebanon, studied engineering together at UC San Diego, and built a healthcare IT company from scratch. When they sold it, they didn't retire — they went looking for the best possible dirt to grow Cabernet on, and found it 2,200 feet up, on a slope so steep parts of it grade 56%. As Georges has put it, they didn't buy a winery: they bought raw land — no wells, no vines, no power, no tasting room. Everything on the mountain now, they built. The soil is the actual reason the wine is this good: a rare calcareous clay over limestone, nearly identical to what you'd find in Saint-Émilion in Bordeaux. Combine that with cool air pulled in through the Templeton Gap and the ocean just 14 miles away, and you get small, concentrated berries that don't happen at lower, hotter elevations. It's not a marketing angle — it's why serious Cabernet people started paying attention to Paso Robles in the first place. One detail I liked: the original vineyard on this mountain was planted decades earlier by Dr. Stanley Hoffman, one of the pioneers of Paso Robles wine. You don't really arrive at Hearst Castle — you get delivered to it. We booked tickets ahead of time (the Grand Rooms Tour, if memory serves) and left the car at the Visitor Center in San Simeon, because you're not allowed to drive up yourself. A bus takes you the rest of the way, winding up the hill for what feels like forever — past the spot where Hearst used to keep his own private zoo. Some of the animals were never rounded up. Zebras still roam those hills today, and you genuinely might spot one from the road on your way in. Then the bus rounds a corner and the whole thing just appears above you. Here's what nobody quite prepares you for: Hearst Castle doesn't commit to one style of anything. Spanish tile next to Roman columns, Mediterranean stucco next to Gothic ceilings. There's a reason for that. Hearst's mother took him on a grand tour of Europe when he was ten, and he spent the rest of his life trying to rebuild everything he'd fallen in love with as a kid, on one hill, all at once. He worked with his architect, Julia Morgan, for 28 years — and the castle was still technically unfinished when he died. To my very unsophisticated eye, it reads as an enormous, gorgeous piece of nonsense. I mean that as a compliment. The Neptune Pool is the part everyone photographs, and it earns it — Roman colonnades, a temple façade Hearst had shipped over from Europe, water so blue it looks retouched. It isn't. What most people don't know: Hearst wasn't happy with it the first two times, and had it rebuilt three separate times before he finally let it be. Inside, the Refectory — the dining hall — is where the whole place gets absurd in the best way: medieval banners hanging under a carved Gothic ceiling, a table set with fine antique china... and a bottle of Heinz ketchup sitting right there on it, completely unbothered. Hearst was famous for exactly that mix of grandeur and no-fuss American normalcy. His dinner guests reportedly included Charlie Chaplin, Winston Churchill, and George Bernard Shaw — presumably all passing that same ketchup bottle down the table at some point. Let me start by saying I set off from Monterey (San Francisco to Los Angeles, passing through Monterey) — Highway 1 Big Sur section! 📍Route: Monterey → Carmel → Big Sur Drive south along Highway 1 the whole way. The entire route features coastal cliffs, forests, and ocean waves, with almost no chance of getting lost. Recommended stops (north to south) 📍1. Garrapata State Park Overlook You’ll see this shortly after entering Big Sur. The cliffs and coastline here are especially spectacular, with fewer people, making it perfect for great photos. 📍2. Bixby Creek Bridge (famous bridge) The most iconic landmark in Big Sur! Built in 1932, about 85 meters high, it’s one of the most famous concrete arch bridges in the US. Many car commercials, movies, and Apple wallpapers have been shot here. 📍3. Point Sur Lighthouse (view from a distance only) A century-old lighthouse built on volcanic rock, full of history.
