Craving something off the beaten path? Lake Ohrid’s Albanian side is an absolute vibe—think pure tranquility, wild mountain views, and hardly any crowds. It’s the perfect alternative to the North Macedonian shoreline, which gets all the hype but (let’s be real) can also be a total tourist magnet. What’s crazy cool: This lake is ancient, literally—2 to 5 MILLION years old 🤯! It’s one of Europe’s deepest and oldest lakes, fringed by epic mountains on all sides, so every photo is a screensaver moment. While everyone else is swarming the historic city of Ohrid over on the Macedonian side, the laid-back 30km stretch in Albania lets you soak up some real, unfiltered Balkan lakeside living. It’s all about the chill vibes! The main hubs are: Pogradec (the biggest town on the Albanian shore; Address: Rruga Gani Butka, Pogradec 7301, Albania): This is where most people start their lakeside adventure. Stroll the pretty promenade, hit up lakefront cafes, and check out the local market for all the fresh eats. Lin (super cute village on a peninsula; Location: Lin, Pogradec municipality, Albania): Tiny but totally Insta-worthy, with stone houses, wildflowers, and jaw-dropping sunset views that are next level. Tushemisht (right on the border; Address: Tushemisht, near Drilon, Pogradec 7301, Albania): Think lush springs, chill boat rides, and some iconic lamp-lit restaurants at the edge of the water 🌅. Bonus: The whole Lake Ohrid area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for both its natural beauty and centuries of epic cultural history. So wherever you explore, you’re basically living in a museum (but make it ✨aesthetic✨). Opening hours: Nature never sleeps! Most promenades and lakefront paths are open 24/7, but restaurants/cafes in Pogradec and Tushemisht usually open from 8:00 AM–11:00 PM (double-check locally for exact times). Hot tip: For the ultimate peaceful getaway, book a lakeside guesthouse in Lin or Tushemisht on trip.com and live your best lakeside dream! #lakeohrid #ohrid2026 #albaniannature #travel

Walking through the Old Town felt like traveling back in time. Historic stone houses, medieval churches, and panoramic viewpoints overlook the deep blue waters of one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes. Every corner revealed another postcard-worthy scene. 📸 One of the highlights was visiting the iconic Church of St. John at Kaneo, dramatically perched on a cliff above the lake. Europe has a reputation for being expensive, but honestly, that really depends on where you go. Some of my favorite trips have been in countries where I didn’t have to constantly think about how much I was spending. Here are three affordable European countries that I think are genuinely worth visiting. 1. Albania Albania surprised me more than I expected. Before going, I mostly knew it for its beaches, but there’s so much more to see. Tirana is colorful and full of energy, while places like Berat and Gjirokastër feel completely different, with old stone streets and beautiful historic buildings. But my favorite part is definitely the Albanian Riviera. The water around Ksamil is ridiculously clear, and in some places it almost feels like you’re somewhere in Greece just without the same prices. Food, accommodation, and transportation are generally quite affordable, so it’s an easy place to enjoy without spending too much. 2. North Macedonia North Macedonia feels a little underrated, which is probably part of the reason I liked it. Lake Ohrid was easily the highlight for me. The combination of the lake, mountains, old churches, and quiet streets makes it the kind of place where you naturally slow down. Sitting by the water in the evening with nowhere I needed to rush to was probably one of my favorite moments there. It’s also noticeably cheaper than many of the more popular destinations in Europe, especially when it comes to local food and accommodation. 3. Bosnia and Herzegovina Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of those countries that has a completely different atmosphere from the typical European destinations. Sarajevo has such an interesting mix of cultures and history, and walking around the old town almost feels like being somewhere between Europe and the Middle East. Then there’s Mostar, with its famous Old Bridge and beautiful old streets along the river. What I loved most was how much you could experience without needing a huge budget. The food is good, portions are generous, and everyday travel costs can still be surprisingly reasonable. Final Thoughts Albania, North Macedonia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina might not be the first countries people think about when planning a European trip, but that’s exactly what makes them interesting. They’re affordable, beautiful, and still have that feeling of discovering somewhere a little less obvious. And sometimes, those are the trips I end up remembering the most. #albania #northmacedonia #bosniaandherzegovina

If you’re visiting #pogradec, don’t miss the chance to continue your journey just a little further across the border into North Macedonia. Only a short drive away lies St. Naum, one of the most beautiful and peaceful destinations around Lake Ohrid. 🌊 As soon as you arrive, you’ll understand why so many travelers fall in love with this place. Surrounded by crystal-clear springs, lush greenery, and breathtaking lake views, St. Naum is the perfect combination of nature, history, and tranquility. 🍃 The main attraction is the Monastery of Saint Naum, founded over 1,100 years ago. It is one of the most important spiritual and cultural landmarks in the region and is dedicated to Saint Naum of Ohrid, who played a major role in spreading Christianity and literacy throughout the Balkans. ⛪ One of the highlights of visiting St. Naum is taking a boat ride through the Springs of the Black Drin River. The water is incredibly clear, allowing you to see underwater plants and the natural springs that feed Lake Ohrid. It’s a peaceful experience and one of the best ways to appreciate the beauty of this unique ecosystem. 🚣♀️💙 As you walk around, you’ll also notice colorful peacocks freely roaming the monastery grounds, adding even more charm to the peaceful atmosphere. 🦚 After exploring, take some time to relax at one of the lakeside restaurants. Fresh fish, traditional Macedonian dishes, and beautiful views over Lake Ohrid make it the perfect place to enjoy lunch while listening to the sounds of nature. 🍽️🌊 ✨ Fun fact: Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe, estimated to be over one million years old, and both the lake and the surrounding area are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of their extraordinary natural and cultural value. Whether you’re already staying in Pogradec or exploring the Balkans by road, St. Naum makes for the perfect half-day or full-day trip. It’s peaceful, picturesque, and only minutes from the Albanian border, proving that sometimes the most unforgettable places are just around the corner. ❤️🌿 #travel2026 #travel #lakeohrid #northmacedonia #ibistravel

#underratedspots Skopje is often overlooked by travelers exploring the Balkans, but it turned out to be one of the biggest surprises of my trip. Few European capitals combine so many different architectural styles and cultures in one place. Crossing the iconic Stone Bridge, I moved from the lively Old Bazaar—with its Ottoman streets, mosques, and traditional cafés—to a city center filled with grand monuments, modern buildings, and impressive public squares. The contrast is striking, yet it gives Skopje a character that's completely its own. For the best views, head up to Kale Fortress overlooking the city. As the sun sets, the skyline, surrounding mountains, and the Vardar River create one of the best panoramas in North Macedonia. If you have time, ride the cable car to Mount Vodno and visit the Millennium Cross for an even wider view. Many travelers use Skopje as a quick stop before heading to Ohrid or neighboring countries. I think that's a mistake. Spend at least a full day here, wander beyond the main squares, and you'll discover a capital that's far more interesting than its reputation suggests. #HiddenSpots #Skopje #NorthMacedonia #Balkans #Travel #HiddenGem #TravelPhotography #EuropeTravel

Albania is an amazing destination, offering everything from gorgeous beaches and snow-covered mountains to historic landmarks and vibrant cities. The country’s modern history is just as captivating as its ancient past. Ledio was fantastic in showing us around and expertly managing the chaotic traffic—we simply couldn’t have done it without his support. From the outset, we tailored the itinerary to our preferences, and everything was transparent—no unexpected changes to destinations or costs. Starting in Tirane, we traveled down the coast, visiting Vlore, Himare, Porto Palermo Castle, Sarande, Ksamil, and Butrint. Afterward, we headed inland to experience the Blue Eye, Gjirokaster, and Berat, two breathtaking cities known for their distinct castles and fortresses. We concluded our trip at Lin, Albania and Ohrid, North Macedonia, enjoying the serene beauty of Lake Ohrid. #September2025 Tucked away on the high ground of the old town of Ohrid, Macedonia, lies a masterpiece of art and spirituality: the Church of Saint Mary Perivleptos. Built in the late 13th century, this Eastern Orthodox church is not only one of Ohrid's most iconic religious buildings but also boasts one of the best-preserved examples of Byzantine fresco art, offering valuable insights into the development of religious culture and art in medieval Macedonia. Built in 1295, this Byzantine church, despite its unassuming exterior, boasts breathtaking frescoes within, considered a masterpiece of late 13th-century Byzantine art. The simple exterior of Saint Mary Perivleptos, constructed with a staggered interplay of red brick and stone, embodies the classic Byzantine architectural style. Nestled between narrow streets and residential areas, it lacks the eye-catching charm of the Church of St. John on Lake Ohrid, requiring some effort to locate. Yet, it is precisely this understatedness that enhances its mystique, as if waiting for the right person to uncover its inner splendor. Entering the church, you'll be struck by the sight before you: the walls, domes, and vaults are almost entirely covered in vibrantly colored and richly detailed frescoes. These frescoes break with the traditional Byzantine style of the time, infusing it with movement and emotion. The figures' expressions are vivid, powerful, and their body language imbued with drama. The frescoes of the Church of Santa Maria Periv Leptos are not only masterpieces of art but also important historical documents, revealing the religious beliefs, social customs, and artistic landscape of the Balkans in the late 13th century. For visitors interested in Byzantine art, religious history, or fresco painting, this church is an absolute must-see on any trip to Ohrid. It is not only a cultural landmark of Ohrid but also a precious legacy of human artistic history.

#September2025 The majestic Samuel's Fortress stands proudly atop the old city of Ohrid, North Macedonia. It's not only an iconic landmark, but also a historical fortress that has witnessed the vicissitudes of the Balkan Peninsula for millennia. Its fortified walls and stunning location offer visitors unparalleled panoramic views of Ohrid and its stunning lake and mountain scenery. While Samuel's Fortress dates back to the 4th century BC, the majority of the existing structures were built and expanded by Tsar Samuel, the First Bulgarian Emperor, in the late 10th and early 11th centuries AD. During Samuel's reign, Ohrid served as the capital of the Bulgarian Empire, and the fortress served as a vital military and political center. Despite numerous wars and restorations, the fortress's sturdy walls and towers remain remarkably strong, serving as a crucial line of defense against powerful powers like the Byzantine and Ottoman empires. Every stone tells a story of heroic history. However, the glory of the Samuel Empire was short-lived. The fortress was finally conquered by the Eastern Roman Empire in 1018, and Ohrid subsequently lost its status as the capital. But the fortress still stands majestically atop the mountain, a testament to the empire's final glory. Visiting Samuel Fortress is not just about admiring the scenery, but also about experiencing the rich history it carries. More than just a building, Samuel Fortress is a living history museum, representing Ohrid's resilience and glory, and offering visitors a unique perspective to appreciate the city's unparalleled beauty.

#September2025 In the heart of Ohrid's old city, North Macedonia, the Church of Saint Sophia, with its magnificent architecture and rich history, stands as one of the city's most iconic landmarks. Not only is it Ohrid's most important medieval structure, it serves as a living history book, witnessing a millennium of change from the Byzantine Empire to the Ottoman Empire and on to the modern era. Located in the heart of this lakeside old city, the Church of Saint Sophia is not only a significant religious heritage site in the Eastern Orthodox world, but also one of the most historically and artistically significant medieval structures in the entire Balkan Peninsula. This church bears witness to Ohrid's golden age as a center of religion, culture, and scholarship, and is a core symbol of its UNESCO World Heritage status. Hagia Sophia was originally built in the mid-11th century as the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Ohrid, replacing the earlier Church of Saint Clement. This period coincided with the heyday of the Byzantine Empire, and Ohrid, as the religious center of the western empire, enjoyed a high degree of autonomy and flourished culturally. It was closely linked to the cultural renaissance of the Bulgarian Empire and served as a vital carrier of Slavic ecclesiastical traditions. Over the following centuries, the church underwent numerous alterations and changes in use. During the Ottoman Empire, it was converted into a mosque, and its murals were covered with plaster until their restoration in the mid-20th century. Hagia Sophia's architecture is a classic Byzantine cross-in-square structure, consisting of a main dome and multiple side chambers. Its exterior, constructed with a simple and solemn interlacing of red brick and stone, embodies the Byzantine architecture's exquisite pursuit of divine proportions and structural balance. Today, Hagia Sophia in Ohrid is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, part of Ohrid's cultural and natural heritage. It is not only an important religious site, but also a window into the medieval Byzantine world, allowing visitors to experience that glorious history and artistic achievements firsthand.

#September2025 The ancient city of Ohrid in North Macedonia, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is renowned not only for its beautiful lakes and medieval churches but also for its many lesser-known archaeological sites. One such quietly glittering Byzantine gem is the Tetraconch Basilica. Although only fragments remain today, these ruins offer a glimpse into the city's former glory. The word "tetraconch," derived from the Greek word for "four shells," refers to a unique architectural form whose floor plan features a central void with semicircular apses extending in four directions. From an aerial perspective, it resembles a blooming four-leaf clover. This design was common in early Byzantine church architecture, particularly between the 4th and 6th centuries, exemplifying the architects' masterful use of space and light. Located in the heart of the ancient city, close to the shores of Lake Ohrid, Ohrid's Tetraconch Basilica is estimated by archaeologists to have been built in the late 5th or early 6th century, coinciding with the golden age of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. The church is large and exquisitely decorated, with its magnificent interior mosaic floor, the most striking feature of the site. Depicting a variety of flora and fauna, such as peacocks, lions, vines, and flowers, the mosaics are detailed and vivid, imbued with the symbolism of early Christian art. Although only ruins remain of the Tetraconch Basilica today, archaeological excavations have revealed that it was once adorned with intricate mosaic floors and stone carvings. These artistic elements not only reflect the aesthetics of early Christianity but also demonstrate the high level of religious art in Ohrid at the time. The Tetraconch Basilica is a significant symbol of Ohrid's historical and religious heritage. Its architectural style, historical context, and cultural significance offer a deeper understanding of religious life during the Byzantine period.

#September2025 If there's one sight in Ohrid that embodies the romance and tranquility of this ancient city, it's the Church of Saint John at Kaneo. With its unique location and captivating views, the church has become a beloved landmark on Lake Ohrid, frequently appearing on tourist postcards and in photographs. Built in the late 13th or early 14th century on a cliff above Lake Ohrid, the church isn't as old as other churches in the city, but its unique architecture and location endow it with unparalleled charm. The church's architecture blends Byzantine and Armenian elements, with a cross-shaped floor plan and an octagonal dome at its center. Constructed with alternating stone and red brick, the simple yet refined design blends seamlessly into the surrounding natural environment, creating a sense of natural beauty. Although the church's interior once boasted a rich collection of frescoes, most were destroyed during the Ottoman Empire. Today, only a few remnants can be seen on the dome of the apse and the north wall of the altar. These frescoes depict John the Baptist, saints, and angels. Though faded, the exquisite brushwork and vibrant colors still linger, testifying to the church's former glory. The atmosphere within is solemn and serene, and the confined space creates a sense of closeness to the spirit. Visitors can light candles here and experience the power of Orthodox faith. St. John's Church is more than just a religious building; it is a sacred site that blends history, art, and natural beauty. It is a symbol of Ohrid, an indispensable image in every traveler's camera, and a spiritual haven in the heart of every culture enthusiast. Standing on the platform in front of the church, as the lake shimmers and the gentle breeze and chime of the bells reach your ears, you realize that this is not just a journey but a profound dialogue with history, nature, and faith.

#September2025 Besides ancient churches and tranquil lakes, Ohrid in North Macedonia boasts a site steeped in romance and history: the stone bridge known locally as the "Bridge of Wishes." A 140-meter-long wooden walkway stretches close to the lake, spanning a small canal on the shores of Lake Ohrid. While not Ohrid's most magnificent structure, the legend and stunning scenery behind it make it a must-see for tourists. The Origin of the Legend: A Beautiful Wish The name "Bridge of Wishes" isn't official, but rather derives from a long-held local legend. It's said that if someone makes a wish while crossing the bridge and throws a coin into the water below, their wish will be granted. This legend imbues the bridge with a special magical power, attracting countless visitors who drop coins in the hope that their wish will be carried away by the lake and finally come true. Beyond its legend, the Wishing Bridge itself is a stunning scenic spot for both viewing and photography. Standing atop the bridge, you can admire the magnificent views of St. John's Church, the tranquil fishing village of Kaneo, and Lake Ohrid. A landscape bridge brimming with natural beauty, cultural significance, and a romantic atmosphere, the Wishing Bridge offers more than just a convenient path to St. John's Church; it also serves as a place for visitors to slow down, make wishes, and reminisce along the shores of Lake Ohrid. The Wishing Bridge is more than just a passage connecting the two shores; it bridges reality and dreams. It carries people's beautiful wishes and witnesses the sunrise and sunset along the shores of Lake Ohrid. Visiting here, you might discover that the most beautiful things often lie in ordinary places, yet filled with stories. #TheBridgeofWishes #OhridLake #Ohrid

#September2025 Tucked away in the historic old town of Ohrid, North Macedonia, lies a breathtaking ancient structure: the Ancient Theatre of Ohrid. Built during the Hellenistic period, this open-air theater is not only a vital witness to Ohrid's Roman history, but also one of the best-preserved ancient theaters in the Balkans, a testament to Ohrid's rich cultural heritage and artistic vitality. Its architectural design is imbued with Roman influences, with its fan-shaped auditorium (cavea) and central stage clearly demonstrating the ancient Romans' love of drama and performance. The theater's location, cleverly utilizing the natural slope between two hills, not only provides excellent sound transmission but also offers panoramic views of Ohrid's old town and the lake, a prime example of the perfect fusion of architecture and nature. Today, the ancient theater of Ohrid has regained its cultural mission, hosting numerous concerts, plays, and dance performances annually, particularly during the Ohrid Summer Festival, which attracts artists and visitors from around the world. Hearing music and watching performances under the stars is an unforgettable cultural experience for many visitors. The theater not only echoes history but also lives on in the spirit of art and humanity. More than a historical relic, the ancient theater is a living cultural space, proving that even after thousands of years of slumber, the ancient stage can still shine brightly and continue to tell its stories.

#trip Family Travel Best Choice Nestled amidst the beautiful lakes and mountains of Ohrid in North Macedonia lies a monastery of extraordinary historical significance: the Monastery of Saint Panteleimon. This monastery is not only one of Ohrid's most important religious centers but also the birthplace of Slavic civilization. Located at the archaeological site of Placoshnik in the ancient city of Ohrid, its history dates back to the late 9th century, when it was founded by Saint Clement during the reign of the First Bulgarian Empire. The architecture of the Monastery itself bears witness to a turbulent history. The original church, founded by Saint Clement, was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt throughout history. During the Ottoman Empire's rule, it was converted into a mosque until it was rediscovered during archaeological excavations in the late 19th century. Inside the monastery, you can see numerous murals and icons depicting Christ, the Virgin Mary, and Orthodox saints. Some are copies from modern reconstructions, while others retain their medieval appearance, showcasing a rich tapestry of Orthodox mystical art. St. Panteleimon's Monastery is more than just a religious landmark in Ohrid; it's a living museum, telling a legendary story of knowledge, faith, and perseverance. It reminds us that even the most ancient civilizations had their shining beginnings. @trip.com_tw "Download the Trip.com app ➜ Search [FamilyTravel] on the homepage ➜ View recommended family trips and exclusive deals!"

In our case, the bus to Skopje even departed from the ticket office in the center.

📍St. John at Kaneo Church 4Q6Q+CGJ, Kocho Racin, Ohrid 6000, North Macedonia I visited Kaneo Church, located in the seaside town of Ohrid near the border of Macedonia and Albania. The first photo was taken around 6:00 AM, while the fifth photo was taken in the afternoon. If you want to avoid backlighting, I recommend visiting early in the morning 🌅. From the center of Ohrid, you can walk along a narrow path by the sea, and eventually, the church will come into view. The view from the hilltop is a stunning spot for photography, as shown in the pictures. Be sure to climb to a position where you can capture a shot that makes the church look like it's floating on the sea ✨. By the way, there is no entrance fee, so you can enjoy this incredible view for free. It's truly a blessing!
