Okinawa is Japan’s tropical south and it feels nothing like the rest of the country. Palm trees, turquoise water, coral reefs and a culture that blends Japanese, Chinese and uniquely Ryukyuan traditions. Here’s what to actually do when tha gets there: Snorkel at Cape Manza. The coral here is some of the best accessible snorkelling in Japan and the reef can be reached just by swimming from the beach. Visit Shurijo Castle for a glimpse of the pre-Japanese Ryukyu Kingdom. It’s currently being rebuilt after a fire but sections are open and the grounds are free. Take the ferry to Zamami Island from Naha for a day trip. The water colour is genuinely unreal and the island has beaches that beat anything in the main Okinawa islands for peace and quiet. Eat at a local soba shop. Okinawa soba is nothing like mainland Japanese ramen, it’s a thicker, chewier noodle in a pork and bonito broth. Costs about £3-4 a bowl at a local place and it’s completely addictive. Try Awamori, Okinawa’s local rice spirit. Very different from sake. Very strong. Worth trying once. Hire a bicycle and explore Naha’s backstreets away from the Kokusai Street tourist strip. The local markets around Makishi are genuinely fascinating and almost entirely tourist-free. Best time to visit: April, before the summer crowds and humidity peak. Quieter, cheaper and still warm enough for swimming.

However, since it's such a popular tourist destination, there are actually very convenient bus routes to all the famous attractions. There are even many one-day passes available. If it's your first time visiting Okinawa, you can just buy the Okinawa Fun Pass. Why do I recommend this pass? Because 90% of the included attractions are accessible by public transport, with convenient and frequent schedules. Plus, using this pass can significantly cut down on ticket costs, so I highly recommend it. Day 1: After arriving at the airport, take the monorail to your downtown hotel, and explore Kokusai Dori in the evening. Note: If your flight arrives in the afternoon, you can choose to stay in American Village to make the next day's trip to Churaumi Aquarium easier. Of course, since you aren't driving, I recommend staying at a hotel near Kokusai Dori for the entire trip. This is the most convenient option, as you won't have to lug your bags around, and catching buses is a breeze. Day 2: Churaumi Aquarium + Cape Manzamo. You can use the Okinawa Fun Pass for all of this. Tickets are included, and the bus route is very straightforward, saving you from unnecessary detours. Day 3: Nago Pineapple Park + American Village. In the morning, take a bus to the Pineapple Park for a half-day visit, then catch another bus to experience American Village at night. It's absolutely stunning, which is why it draws such a crowd. These spots are also easily accessible by bus and are located in the same direction, making for a smooth, full-day itinerary. Day 4: DMM Kariyushi Aquarium, Itoman Market, and Toyosaki Seaside Park. I guarantee you'll want to spend the entire day here. You can stroll through supermarkets and department stores, and enjoy the free beach. Day 5: Naminoue Shrine + Senagajima. Since you're flying out on Day 5, lugging baggage around can be a hassle. I recommend leaving your luggage at the hotel early in the morning and heading to Naminoue Shrine to snap some photos. Afterward, pick up your bags, drop them off in an airport coin locker, and head to Senagajima. It's gorgeous there and perfect for capturing stunning, Instagram-worthy shots.
