I parked in Cannon Beach’s downtown lot (paid metered, $2.50/hr, card) and walked the sand south 0.8 mi to Haystack Rock at low tide—a 235 ft sea stack with tufted puffins nesting on top April–July (stay 50 ft back, it’s a protected bird refuge, ranger fines apply). Then I drove 2 mi north to Ecola State Park (2026 day-use $5 per vehicle, self-pay kiosk, cash or the ParkPass app), hiked the Clatsop Loop Trail: 2.5 mi round trip through Sitka spruce forest opening to Indian Beach and Tillamook Rock Lighthouse on a far islet. The trail is muddy in winter, roots slick—wore trail shoes, saw a couple in sandals slide. No potable water in the park; fill in Cannon Beach. Mistake: I went at 1 pm on a July Saturday and the Ecola lot was full, had to park on the highway shoulder 0.5 mi out. Arrive before 10 or after 4. Another mistake: expecting Haystack Rock close-up at high tide—you can’t reach the base, so check tides (minus tide gives tidepools with anemones). Worth it? From Burns, OR, it's 70mi south to Frenchglen (fill fuel in Burns — none on the loop), then 28mi paved-to-summit front side. The East Rim Viewpoint is at ~9,700ft, 1.5h drive from Frenchglen. I rolled up at 6:20 p.m. in September (sunset 7:05), parked at the rim lot, walked 50m to the unfenced edge. The 5,500ft drop to the Alvord Playa is the whole show: the desert floor went from tan to rose, the playa cracked surface turned a sheet of hammered copper, and Steens' own east face caught a last band of orange while the summit behind me was already blue. A $6 milkshake from Fields Station (cash, $10 card min) bought on the way in. Mistake: doing it in a sedan after rain — the backside loop is slick clay, you'll slide to Frenchglen. Another: arriving at 5 p.m. in August — 35°F wind at the rim, no sun angle yet. Rule: no drone (BLM wilderness buffer); no walking to the rim edge in 60km/h gusts (no rail, 5,500ft drop); pack 1 gal water per person, zero services. Opinion: Steens East Rim is the only sunset in this set where you watch the shadow climb your own mountain — the desert lights up because the peak is already dark. Japanese Garden, experience the Portland Japanese Garden, especially the winter dry landscape, with very large koi. There are also several attractions such as the Oregon Zoo. It is a natural trip worth visiting. 🐛

Starting from the Minam Store in Oregon, Washington, you are able to rent all the necessary equipment for your adventure, including large rafts, kayaks, paddles, dry boxes, coolers, dry bags, fire pans, life vests, and helmets. The Minam Store also provides any last-minute supplies you need for the trip, which is convenient. We embarked on a three-day journey downstream, and the breathtaking views of the mountains, wildlife, and untouched nature made the experience even more memorable. Despite encountering low water levels in some areas, which caused our raft to get stuck on rocks frequently, the river's speed allowed us to reach your destination as planned. Overcoming these obstacles definettly added some excitement to your trip. At the end of our adventure, the employees from the Minam Store arranged for our vehicle to be dropped off at a convenient location. This location had restrooms and easy access to the river, allowing us to have one final splash before concluding our trip. We enjoyed your white water rafting journey on the Grande Ronde River. In 2019, I took a leave of absence from college and was worried about my future. I wandered around a lot and didn't have a clear future goal in sight, so I went on a trip to the United States. Among them, I visited Lavender Valley in Oregon, which is known as a hot place for Koreans. My first thought was that it was too famous only in our country and that it wasn't anything special. On the contrary, looking at the endless lavender, I realized that the world I had seen so far was so small and shabby, and it was a place that allowed me to broaden my perspective. It is around an hour from Portland so it is super easy to get to for most visitors! To get the most out of this hike… here are a few tips🤌 🔄 Do this hike clockwise! Since it is a loop, this is the recommended way to do the hike. We recommend parking at the South Falls lot and starting the hike from there. 💲 Don’t forget your credit card! This is a state park so 5 dollars is needed to park at some parking lots. There are machines to make payment easy. 💧 You get to walk behind FOUR waterfalls so expect to get a little wet. During the colder months we recommend bringing a rain jacket to stay dry. ⏱️ Go to the park website prior to your hike to grab the trail map or download an app like alltrails to make sure you stop and see all 10 falls. There are one or two that require a side trail to see. 🐕 Dogs cannot hike the Trail of Ten Falls.
