If you're in Otaru, Sankaku Market (Triangle Market) is a must-visit for all seafood lovers. And nestled inside is one of the absolute best spots: Takinami Donburi. The Vibe: It's a small, bustling, and vibrant fish market. The stalls are overflowing with fresh crab, sea urchin, scallops, and salmon. You can grab seafood to go or dine right there at one of the cozy little restaurants. Takinami Donburi — we went with this specific little spot because all their seafood looked incredibly fresh, and there was a crowd gathered around it, which is always a sure sign of quality! We got there around 11 AM and got in line (about a 20-30 minute wait). You place your order at the counter beforehand, so once you sit down, your food arrives almost instantly. We went with the large kaisendon set: · A generous bowl of rice topped with salmon, crab, uni, scallops, and other seafood · Miso soup (you can upgrade to crab miso soup for an extra 300 yen) · Everything was unbelievably fresh, vibrant, and delicious The portion size is huge; one set is definitely enough for one person. I especially loved the natural sweetness of the crab and the buttery texture of the uni. A stunning historic canal lined with old stone warehouses. It's especially atmospheric during the day and at sunset. The perfect spot for a stroll and some photos. 2. Sakaimachi Dori Shopping Street The main walking and shopping street. This is where all the best stuff is concentrated: · Glassware shops (Otaru is famous for its glass) · Souvenir shops · Lots of cute cafes and restaurants 3. Sankaku Market (Triangle Market) A must-visit for seafood lovers. The freshest kaisendon (rice bowl topped with assorted raw seafood). This is the very first location of the legendary pastry shop famous for its cheesecake. The location is incredibly convenient—just across the street from the Otaru Canal. You can easily drop by for a sweet treat after your stroll. This time, we tried their ultimate crowd-pleaser: the Ice Cream Parfait. It features silky smooth soft-serve ice cream paired with their signature cheesecake, topped with a crispy biscuit. The combination of textures and flavors is just perfection. The cheesecake is incredibly soft and literally melts in your mouth, totally living up to its reputation. The berry sauce adds a nice tartness that perfectly balances the richness, making it so enjoyable that you'll finish the whole cup before you know it. Another item I highly recommend is the Fromage Carré! It's a cheesecake sandwich made with buttery, fragrant biscuits filled with rich cream cheese. The texture is velvety and melts right in your mouth. It has the perfect level of sweetness without being too heavy. Honestly, this was a huge surprise and quickly became my favorite treat of the trip. If you visit, you definitely have to try it—you won't be disappointed! Taking the JR line from Sapporo Station to Otaru takes just 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the train type. The fare is only 800 yen one way. 🎫 Buying tickets is a breeze: · Use the automatic ticket machines at Sapporo Station. · Select Otaru as your destination. · Pay the 800 yen fare. · Alternatively, just tap in and out using an IC Card like Suica or Kitaca. 🚉 The ride itself is one of my favorite parts. As you get closer to Otaru, you'll be treated to stunning views of Ishikari Bay right from the train window. If possible, try to grab a seat on the right side of the train when heading from Sapporo to Otaru—the views are spectacular! 🌊 📍 Once you arrive at Otaru Station, it's an easy 10 to 15-minute walk to the Otaru Canal. Along the way, you'll pass by sweet shops, souvenir stores, and charming historic European-style buildings that are perfect for photo ops. 💡 Worried about navigating Japanese trains? Don't sweat it! The station signs are clearly marked in English, and there are direct trains from Sapporo to Otaru, meaning no transfers are needed. It's incredibly straightforward and perfect for first-timers exploring Japan on their own. 💕 I highly recommend this route! Usually, when people talk about Hokkaido, the first thing that comes to mind is a landscape covered in pure white snow. But for someone like me who can't stand the cold, just the thought of sub-zero temperatures is a dealbreaker. However, I really wanted to experience Hokkaido's charm at least once, so I decided to visit in October, right when the autumn foliage is in full swing. During our trip, the temperature hovered around 9-12°C. For someone who gets cold easily, this was still pretty chilly! But honestly, it was much more manageable for walking around and exploring compared to the freezing winters with heavy snowfall. What blew me away the most was the vibe everywhere we went. It was way more beautiful than I imagined. The leaves were turning vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red, popping against the crisp sky. Every corner looked like it was straight out of a postcard. Here are the places we visited on this trip: · Noboribetsu: A famous hot spring town surrounded by stunning nature. · Futami Suspension Bridge: The iconic red bridge offering breathtaking views, especially with the autumn colors. · Otaru Canal: A charming, romantic little town that's perfect for a stroll, day or night. · Otaru Music Box Museum: A must-visit spot filled with adorable music boxes and great photo ops. · Shiroi Koibito Park (Chocolate Factory): It felt like stepping into a fairytale, complete with sweet shops, cafes, and endless cute spots for photos. · Tanukikoji Shopping Street: Sapporo's go-to shopping arcade. "Otaru Sankaku Market" is a popular spot right outside Otaru Station. While the inside of the market was bustling with tourists, this particular diner is located just before the market entrance! I ordered the Chutoro (medium fatty tuna) lunch seafood bowl, which comes with miso soup for just 1,200 yen. It includes premium Chutoro from Oma, Aomori Prefecture, all for this amazing price!! It’s also topped with a variety of other fresh ingredients like octopus, king salmon, shrimp, squid, shellfish, and other fish. It looks absolutely gorgeous! Considering the price, it’s an incredibly great deal. The portion size is a bit on the smaller side, making it absolutely perfect if you're planning to try different sweets and snacks while exploring Otaru, or if you just want to enjoy some delicious market food at an affordable price!! Since it’s just a short walk from Otaru Station, it’s highly recommended for a meal to kick off your sightseeing or right before you head home! The staff were all very friendly and welcomed us with warm smiles! Taking the kids to Hokkaido was truly the best decision we've ever made! The moment we landed, the kids were stunned and said, "Mom, have we come to the world of Frozen?" Thick powder snow, steaming hot springs, adorable penguins strolling, delicious Sapporo ramen—this 7-day, 6-night snow country trip was truly as beautiful as a fairy tale. The kids said this was the most fun place they've ever been and that they could talk about it forever. ❄️ The snow in Sapporo is incredibly healing On the first day, we leisurely strolled around downtown Sapporo. The Snow Festival at Odori Park was absolutely stunning, with huge snow and ice sculptures that looked magical when lit up at night. The kids rolled in the snow, built snowmen, and had snowball fights, getting their hair wet but refusing to go back to the hotel. Shiroi Koibito Park is a must-visit, perfect for families! You can tour the chocolate factory, watch the entire chocolate-making process, and even make cookies by hand. The kids made a heart-shaped cookie and said they wanted to bring it home to grandma. You can climb the Sapporo TV Tower for a panoramic view; the whole city covered in white snow is especially beautiful. Downstairs, Tanukikoji Shopping Street offers plenty of places to eat and shop, including drugstores, snack shops, and restaurants. You must try the melon ice cream—super sweet and rich. The kids ate two and wanted more. Don’t miss Sapporo ramen either; the miso broth is rich, and the chashu pork is tender. One bowl warms you up completely. · -- 🐧 Asahiyama Zoo is so adorable We specifically set aside a day to visit Asahiyama Zoo just to see the penguin parade! It was incredibly cute—little penguins waddling right past you, so close the kids could almost touch them. Besides penguins, there are polar bears, seals, and red pandas, all very cute. The zoo is well designed for close-up viewing, and the kids were very excited, constantly saying how adorable everything was. The penguin parade happens twice a day, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., so be sure to arrive early to get a good spot; otherwise, it’s too crowded to see. You can have lunch at Ramen Village right outside the zoo, which has 8 ramen shops famous throughout Hokkaido. Any choice is delicious. We had miso ramen, and the broth was so rich we drank it all. · -- 🚂 The romance of Otaru is unmatched Otaru is perfect for photography! Snow by the canal, vintage gas lamps, European-style buildings—every shot looks like a masterpiece. The kids threw snowballs and laughed by the canal, and every photo turned out great. The Music Box Museum is a must-visit, with all kinds of music boxes. When the music plays, it’s especially romantic. The kids picked a little train music box and loved it. The glassware at Kitaichi Glass is stunning, and you can try glassblowing. The kids made a small cup, which was a bit crooked but very meaningful. Don’t miss the sweets at Rokkatei—strawberry chocolate sandwich cookies are delicious, and we bought many as souvenirs. LeTAO’s cheesecake is also a must-try, melting in your mouth with a rich milky flavor. · -- ♨️ Noboribetsu Onsen is so relaxing We spent the last two days soaking in Noboribetsu’s hot springs, which was incredibly refreshing. The scenery at Jigokudani (Hell Valley) is breathtaking, with steaming volcanic craters and a strong sulfur smell, making you feel like you’ve entered another world. At the Bear Park, you can feed the bears; the big bears wave their paws for food and are very smart. The kids had a great time feeding them. Soaking in the outdoor hot springs at night while watching snowflakes fall is a truly magical experience. You must try the onsen eggs—the whites are tender, and the yolks are half-runny, especially delicious dipped in soy sauce. The hotel’s kaiseki meals are exquisite, featuring seafood, wagyu beef, and sushi, each dish very tasty. Taking kids to Hokkaido means no rushing itinerary—just playing in the snow, soaking in hot springs, and enjoying delicious food at a relaxed pace. We’ll definitely come back next winter; it’s just too beautiful. Crafted by a Canadian clockmaker, it plays a five-note melody (like a whistle) using steam every 15 minutes. That exact moment when the steam hisses out every 15 minutes is absolutely perfect for a video clip. Framing both the retro brick building and the clock together in your shot is the classic way to do it! Even though they are simply called "music boxes," the variety is astonishing.
