Medieval streets of Pals
Mediterranean Coast Tour in Spain ~ Girona (Region)
The county of Baix Empordà in the province of Girona has a lovely old town in this town, declared a Historic Artistic Site.
In the Gothic quarter of Pals, pretty cobbled streets flanked by noble houses await you. Pals Beach ends the visit to the walled town. At any point you can taste the cuisine of the region, which is made with products from the sea and the mountains.
A few kilometers from the coast of the Costa Brava, the wild coast of the province of Girona, there is a medieval town. Its historic center is located on a hill, surrounded by plains that were originally marshland. You have to go back to the 9th century - the period to which this castle belongs - to find the first written reference to this town. Constant war confrontations meant that only the castle, a defensive structure, has been preserved over the centuries. It is a round Romanesque tower built between the 11th and 13th centuries. The 15-meter-high tower stands on a natural rock platform, which contains many Visigothic tombs. In the 15th century, it was used as a bell tower, hence the name "Torre de las Horas" (Tower of the Hours).
