Since it’s a public holiday, many places might be closed, but I was lucky enough to find a döner kebab shop 🌯, and to my surprise, it was absolutely delicious 🤤. The lake is long, shallow, popular with sailboats (no motor), and the mossy cliff walk is the 3 km sentier botanique linking the dam to the village of Rasiguères. I went off-season (late Sept), had the schist path to myself, smelled thyme and wet stone. No facilities at the lake—Caramany village has a caveau selling Muscat (6 EUR/bottle, card ok). Water 1.5 L enough, shade is sparse, hat mandatory. Mistake: I assumed "Pyrenees" meant cold—it was 29°C, the moss was dry crunchy, not dripping. Different moss, different rule. Local rule: the château cliff is private (vineyard owner), no climbing, no off-path. The botanical trail is free, signed with Occitan plant names. I came by car from Perpignan (1 h 10, fuel ~12 EUR), parked at the Belvedere de Galamus (3 EUR coin), and walked the 800 m gorge path both directions. The moss is on the north wall where the Agly river sprays—July temps hit 34°C outside, but the gorge stays 10° cooler, dripping. No facilities in the gorge; Saint-Paul has a bakery and a tabac, card ok. Swimming in the Agly is technically allowed at the downstream pools but the current is vicious after rain—locals shake their heads. I wore sandals, slipped on moss, saved myself on a holm oak root. When you actually visit those cities, you'll find ridiculously overpriced restaurants (I'm just a normal person), glamorous celebrity travelers from all over the world (major jealousy), and especially during the summer high season, it's way too crowded to even feel like a vacation 😭 That's why I highly recommend traveling to Perpignan in the spring, just before the peak summer season kicks in!! ⭐️ Why I Recommend Perpignan ⭐️ 1. Easy transportation from the airport to the city center This time, I took a 6:10 AM flight from London and arrived at Perpignan Airport in about 2 hours. You can easily get to the city center in about 30 minutes on a single bus right from the front of the airport. You can pay contactless with a card, so no cash is needed, but I recommend having a few different cards ready just in case. Also, all the main attractions in the city are within walking distance. 2. Delicious food Perpignan is the central city of French Catalonia; it was once part of Spain's Catalonia region and is about a 2-hour drive from Barcelona. You can enjoy both French and Spanish cuisine! And at a much more reasonable price than in Paris, Nice, or Barcelona 🥹 This restaurant where I had lunch gave me one of the highest levels of satisfaction among all the restaurants I've ever visited 🐷💞 The €30 daily 3-course menu was perfectly balanced, and I could feel the incredible effort put into each and every dish—something unimaginable at this price point 🥹🥹 The waitresses were all so charming, and I want to go back again as soon as possible! 📍 Location: Le 17 1 Rue Cité Bartissol, 66000 Perpignan, France Since it's close to the sea, you can also eat fresh and delicious oysters 🦪 I grabbed an assorted platter of Spanish Jamón Serrano nearby and had the absolute best Cava right from the afternoon 🥂 📍 Location: POISSONNERIE CHEZ MIREILLE 5 Rue René Paratilla, 66000 Perpignan, France 3. You'll never get bored with so many small towns nearby Transportation is highly convenient, allowing you to use Perpignan as a base to visit various charming towns. For example, the seaside town of Collioure is about 20 minutes away by train 🌊 The hilltop town of Carcassonne is about 1 hour and 30 minutes away by train. I loved Collioure so much that I spent most of this trip there, but renting a car would expand your range of exploration even further 🚗✨ Collioure and its surrounding areas are plenty of fun even without a rental car 👌 4. Fewer tourists Compared to other cities in the South of France, there are fewer tourists, giving it a much more relaxed vibe 😌 I'm sure it gets more crowded in the middle of summer, especially in the seaside town of Collioure, but Perpignan itself doesn't have an overwhelming amount of tourist spots, making it the perfect choice for a 3-day, 2-night Easter holiday getaway. I even got to see the Procession de la Sanch on Good Friday, which was a very special experience. After carcassonne we were trying to make our way to Barcelona. I was trying to think of a place that would help explore the Pyrenees region. Perpignan seemed comfortably placed and while there was no raving feedback from people i knew, i figured it would be worth getting to know on my own. In terms of just that reason, as a place to help explore the Pyrenees region, Perpignan fares pretty well. While that wasn't the main focus, I wanted to glimpse the region that I hadn't been able to all these years. The spanish border is less than 10 miles away and the languedoc region can be easily reached from here. During my time i was able to explore the old town, retain the benefit of an urban stay and there were beaches too. It's actually a very colorful place. And the weather was perfect for beach days. The night life experiences were satisfactory. It's got a vibrant night scene. It was nothing to brag about, but turned out to be a purposeful stay. Three days later, the cross border TGV line allowed us a smooth travel to Barcelona under an hour.

In the evening we stayed at Mas Latour Lavail, owned by Cazes Manor, which is about five or six minutes drive from the winery. The boss drew a map on the paper. I am worried that we can't read it. If we forget it, we will drive us directly. To my surprise, the rating of this homestay on the travel website is too high, it is incredible. Later, I realized that because of the high cost performance, all the guests would find it worth the money. The boss didn't even think about making money. It seems that the rich second generation in France is also like this. If you have money, you will be willful. The B&B is a converted wine cellar, and the rest of the lobby still retains the look of the wine cellar. Every design seems to be prepared for wine tasting. The five rooms at are different in design, and the colours are inspired by the colours of the five bottles of wine in the Cazes manor. Although it is a homestay, the hardware facilities and software services are not inferior to the hotel, but it feels more at home.
