Moieciu travel guide and discussion

If you’re visiting Brașov, don’t just stay in the beautiful old town — head into the mountains. 🏔️🚗 Just outside the city lies Zărnești, a small mountain town surrounded by some of Romania’s most spectacular scenery. This is where medieval Transylvania meets the wild Carpathian Mountains. 🇷🇴✨ 📍 Brașov Old Town 🏰 Start in the heart of Brașov at Piața Sfatului, surrounded by colourful historic buildings and the impressive Black Church. Wander through the narrow Rope Street (Strada Sforii), explore the old city walls and climb toward Mount Tâmpa for one of the best views over the city. 🌆🏔️ Brașov has that rare feeling of being both a lively European city and a mountain town at the same time. 🚗 Then drive toward Zărnești As you leave Brașov behind, the landscape quickly changes. Villages, forests and enormous mountain peaks begin to surround the road. 📍 Zărnești 🏔️ Zărnești is the gateway to Piatra Craiului National Park, one of Romania’s most spectacular protected areas. The mountains here are dramatically different from the rolling hills around Brașov. The Piatra Craiului ridge rises sharply above the forests, with limestone cliffs and narrow valleys creating an incredible landscape for hiking. 🥾🌲 🥾 Zărnești Gorge — Prăpăstiile Zărneștilor One of the highlights is the spectacular Zărnești Gorge, a narrow limestone canyon surrounded by towering cliffs. The road/trail winds between the enormous rock walls, with forests and mountain peaks rising above you. It’s an easy place to spend a few hours walking, taking photos and simply enjoying the scenery. 🐻 Wildlife territory This region is also famous for its wildlife. The Carpathians are home to brown bears, wolves, lynx and wild boar, making the mountains around Brașov some of Europe’s most important remaining wilderness areas. And yes… Romania has a LOT of bears. 🐻😂 🏔️ Piatra Craiului If you’re into hiking, this is where the adventure really begins. Piatra Craiului is famous for its dramatic limestone ridge, with trails ranging from relaxed forest walks to challenging mountain routes. On a clear day, the views across the Carpathians are incredible. 🌄 🌲 The best part? You don’t need to travel deep into the wilderness to experience it. Within a relatively short drive from Brașov, you can go from medieval streets and cafés ☕ to forests, gorges and towering mountain peaks. 🏔️ ⭐ Perfect day: Brașov Old Town → Mount Tâmpa viewpoint → drive to Zărnești → Zărnești Gorge → Piatra Craiului National Park → back to Brașov ⏱️ Allow a full day if you want to properly explore the mountains, or stay overnight in the Zărnești area for even more hiking. 🇷🇴 Brașov gives you the history. Zărnești gives you the wilderness. Together, they make one of the best combinations in Transylvania. ❤️🏔️ #romania

#easytravelpost Piatra Craiului is a 25 km limestone blade, La Om (2,238 m) at its high point, with the Zărnești Canyon (Prăpăstiile Zărneștilor) on its east foot and the Grind sheepfold (stână) on the west ridge approach. I took the Brașov→Zărnești train (45 min, ~regio fare), taxi to Fântâna lui Botorog (30 RON), walked the canyon to Curmătura Chalet (4 hrs, yellow band), reached the ridge next day. The cliff moss is the canyon wall and the sheepfold stone: Fissidens and Hylocomium in the canyon seep where the Fagus drips, Sphagnum on the sheepfold's limestone trough wall, and the cliff above the Crăpătura saddle has Racomitrium on the wind face—limestone blade-moss is tufted silver, glowing at 06:30. I crouched at the Grind sheepfold at 07:00, the moss silver, a chamois on the ridge 100 m up, the canyon a green slit 800 m below. The ridge is narrow, exposed, no water above Curmătura—carry 3 L. Mistake: I climbed to the Crăpătura saddle in trail runners after rain and the limestone was glass—approach shoes mandatory, the rock is polished by 100 yrs of boots. Another: I photographed the sheepfold dogs without the shepherd's nod and got a 10 m charge; ask before any lens near a stână. Would you walk Zărnești Canyon to the Grind sheepfold for the limestone-moss dawn at 07:00, or skip the canyon and do the full ridge traverse instead?

#easytravelpost Piatra Craiului is a 25 km limestone blade, and the Zărnești side is the cleanest entry. I took the Regio train from Brașov to Zărnești (45–50 min, ~10 RON), taxi to Fântâna lui Botorog (30 RON), bought the park ticket (10 RON, 7-day), and walked the gorge—cool, enclosed, rocky, 1.5 hours to Curmătura Chalet at 1,470 m. There I ate polenta with sheep cheese (35 RON) while a flock moved past the sheepfold below. The ridge proper (La Om, 2,238 m) is exposed limestone with cables at “La Lanțuri”; I didn’t traverse the full blade, just climbed to the Grind meadow for the tooth-line view and came back via the yellow-band alpine flank. Bears are real—make noise, don’t run, keep 50 m from the sheepfold dogs. Mistake: I filled one bottle at Botorog spring and trusted “springs higher up” blogs—limestone is porous, no water on the ridge. Carry 2.5 L. Another: I hiked the gorge at noon in August and baked; morning shade is the move. Would you stop at Curmătura for the gorge-and-meadow loop, or commit to the 2-day ridge traverse with a rope-and-cable head?

#hellohalloween Piatra Craiului National Park is one of Romania’s most stunning mountain destinations, located in the Southern Carpathians, near the town of Zărnești in Transylvania. The park centers around the Piatra Craiului Massif, a dramatic limestone ridge about 25 km long, with sharp, jagged peaks rising up to 2,238 meters (La Om Peak). It’s known for its distinctive knife-edge ridge, beautiful limestone cliffs, alpine meadows, and rich biodiversity.
