Pay homage to one of the nine sacred stupas of Chiang Rai
🛕 Phra That Chom Waen is located at Wat Phra That Chom Waen, one of the nine significant stupas of Chiang Rai. It was built by Phaya Ngam Muang, the ruler of Phu Kam Yao (now Phayao), around 1294 AD.
🌄 While the ruler ascended Doi Sang Kham (Doi Chom Waen) to inspect his territory, in the fourth month of the same year, he ordered Khantasena Mat, along with knowledgeable individuals and commoners, to construct Phra That Chom Waen on Doi Sang Kham.
🙏🏽 The stupa enshrines sacred relics, including hair relics of the Buddha, as well as precious gems, gold, and silver.
🧱 Later, due to unrest in the region, villagers migrated elsewhere, leading to the stupa's deterioration. In 1837 AD, Phaya Han, the first ruler of Phan, restored the stupa.
🛕 During the reign of Phaya Chai Chana Songkhram, the third ruler of Phan, the stupa was renovated again, enlarged, and enshrined with the Maha Chinda relics. A tradition of pouring water over the stupa on the full moon day of the 8th Northern month was also established.
🏠 Within the temple, there are significant structures, including the vihara housing the principal Buddha image in the Mara Vichaya posture, the Phra Phuttha Chom Kesa Maha Mangalanu Sorn, a large Buddha image in the blessing posture, a large reclining Buddha, and a statue of Phra Sangkachai.
