This period coincided with Emperor Wuzong's anti-Buddhist policies, during which most temples across the country were abolished, monks and nuns were forced to return to secular life, and Buddhism experienced a period of decline. Sanping Temple's survival was no accident. Its founder, Zen Master Yizhong (later revered as the Sanping Patriarch), chose this secluded location for the temple, nestled between three peaks, with a "spiritual snake" behind it and a "divine tortoise" in front, hence the name "Sanping" (meaning "three-level"). The Sanping Patriarch was deeply revered by the people and received official support for his compassionate work, teaching agricultural techniques, and practicing medicine. Emperor Xuanzong of Tang bestowed upon him the title "Master Guangji," and after his death, the "Sanping Patriarch" cult was established, which continues to this day, contributing to Sanping Temple's gradual development into an important Buddhist center in southern Fujian and overseas. The Sanping Temple complex is magnificent and imposing. Most of the existing buildings were rebuilt during the Qing Dynasty, and the overall "three-courtyard" layout is grand and imposing. Our group of two walked slowly along the central axis, entering the mountain gate in sequence. We visited the Mahavira Hall, the Sangharama Hall, the Dining Hall, the Patriarch Hall, the Pagoda Hall, and the Ksitigarbha Hall. The temple's preserved artifacts, the lines of the steles, the calligraphy of the couplets, the stone carvings, and the statues all blended together to create an aesthetic fusion, showcasing the profound Buddhist cultural heritage. This temple possesses the dual characteristics of "orthodox Buddhism" and "local folk beliefs," continuing the spirit of Tang Dynasty Zen Buddhism while incorporating the open spiritual healing space, prayer for blessings, and the hope for healing and disaster relief found in Southern Fujian folk beliefs. Another feature of Sanping Temple is its natural landscape, creating a tranquil natural haven. The layout of mountains, springs, forests, and caves allows one to find peace and freedom. Lingtong Mountain, known as the "Hanging Temple of Fujian," is located in Pinghe County, Zhangzhou. The transportation here is not convenient, so self-driving is necessary, especially for the last 10 kilometers of mountain road, which has many sharp turns and is quite a test of driving skills. This time, the route is a loop: Qingyun Temple — Lingtong Rock (return) — Qingtian Peak (return) — Tiantang Temple — Lion Peak (return) — Qingyun Temple. The total length is about 10 kilometers (not recorded from the start), with a cumulative ascent of 873 meters, taking 5 hours (including breaks, photos, and drone flying). Starting from the Qingyun Temple parking lot, Qingyun Temple (Photo 10) has only one main hall. The first part of the road is an easy-to-walk highway, but the following section of stairs is quite physically demanding. Lingtong Rock (Photos 1–5) is a thousand-year-old ancient temple comparable to the Hanging Temple in Shanxi, with a very active incense burning. There are also some small scenic spots here (Photos 6–9). Tongtian Platform (Photo 11) is not necessary to visit, as the scenery is average. Returning from Lingtong Rock, you can climb Qingtian Peak along the mountain path. One section is quite steep and requires climbing iron ladders (Photo 12). The mountain shape here (Photo 13) resembles a "V" and is considered a popular check-in spot. Qingtian Peak (Photos 14–15), at an altitude of 1,288 meters, is the highest peak of Lingtong Mountain. The ascent is quite steep and somewhat dangerous, requiring the use of both hands and feet, and gloves are recommended. Although the difficulty is not as high as Ranshe Peak, it is more challenging than Diaoyuweng and Diaodenglong. The summit is quite open (Photo 16). The path from Qingtian Peak to Tiantang Temple mainly goes downhill, but the road conditions are poor (Photo 17), so a pair of anti-slip professional hiking shoes is needed, and hiking poles are even better. Tiantang Temple is very small, and about 100 meters ahead is a viewing platform (Photo 18). Lion Peak (Lion’s Mouth Peak) is another climbable mountain peak. There are very few people here. Compared to Qingtian Peak, it is less dangerous but equally steep. The summit is typical volcanic lava, more open, and offers excellent views (Photo 19). From Lion Peak back to Qingyun Temple is about 2 kilometers, mostly downhill. Navigation: Qingyun Hotel (or Qingyun Temple). Tickets cost 20 yuan, parking 10 yuan.
