Secret Land of Northern Sichuan: Pingwu Baima, Tianmu Lake, and the Ancient Tibetan Village
In the northern part of Mianyang, Sichuan, deep within the Min Mountains, lies a little-known ethnic corridor. Unlike the bustling main routes of western Sichuan, this area boasts equally clear alpine lakes, well-preserved ancient villages, and a group known as one of the "oldest tribes in East Asia"—the Baima people.
This guide is dedicated to presenting the land in its original form.
Tianmu Lake: The Emerald of the Plateau
Tianmu Lake is a gem in the Baima people's settlement area. The lake lies quietly in a valley over 2,000 meters above sea level, with crystal-clear water that shifts in shades of blue and green depending on the light.
The most notable feature around the lake is the distinct seasonal landscape layers:
· Late autumn (late October to mid-November), the hillsides around the lake are covered with colorful forests in red, orange, yellow, and green, creating a striking contrast with the deep blue water;
· After winter snowfall, snow-capped mountains reflect in the lake, with occasional mist on the surface, evoking a serene and chilly atmosphere;
· In spring and summer, the lake is a vibrant blue, surrounded by lush greenery.
The best spot to view the lake is the observation deck near Water Buffalo House Tunnel No. 1, offering a panoramic view of the lake. There is also a wooden boardwalk along the shore for leisurely walks, where you might occasionally see locals fishing. Since the lake has not been heavily developed, there are no commercial areas nearby, presenting pure natural scenery.
Baxijia Ancient Village: Living History
Baxijia Ancient Village, the most important Baima settlement by Tianmu Lake, is known as the "First Ancient Village of Baima," with a history spanning over a thousand years.
The village is built facing the lake and mountains, mostly with wooden structures, preserving traditional stone foundations and stilted wooden houses. Walking on the cobblestone paths, you can see wooden doors, windows, and walls all maintaining their original appearance. The white rooster totem standing on the rooftops is a unique symbol of Baima people's faith.
The village is open to visitors, and residents still live there. Here you can experience:
· Intangible cultural heritage workshops: making Cao Gai masks, weaving flower waistbands, felting hats, and other traditional crafts;
· Daily life: residents dressed in traditional clothing, communicating in their native language;
· Courtyard scenes: many homes have gesang flowers planted at their doors, adding a lively touch.
At nightfall, bonfires often light up the square, and locals dressed in festive attire lead guests in the "Round Dance," offering the most direct experience of the ethnic spirit.
Surrounding Extensions: Canyons and Forests
Several natural canyons are scattered around Tianmu Lake, ideal for hiking enthusiasts:
· Sea Buckthorn Gorge: accessible by vehicle, ending with a calcified waterfall and alpine meadows; autumn colors and the waterfall create a classic scene;
· Hujiagou: a high mountain stream canyon behind Baxijia Ancient Village, surrounded by red maple and fragrant trees, perfect for deep hiking, known as the "Eastern Alps";
· Gaojiamo Gorge: rich in waterways and sparsely populated, suitable for boating exploration.
Local Flavors and Accommodation
Food specialties:
· Honey Zha Wine: a low-alcohol drink fermented from highland barley, sweet with a honey aroma;
· Smoked Pork Rib Soup: mountain native pig smoked meat stewed with local wild mushrooms, fresh broth and tender meat;

· Aged smoked meat and sausages: traditional smoked products with firm texture.
Accommodation options:
Several guesthouses are available within the ancient village, such as Tianyuan Inn and Flower Waistband Inn. Most are renovated local residences; while not as modern as county hotels, they offer lake and mountain views from the windows. Alternatively, you can stay in Pingwu County for more complete facilities.
🚉 Transportation Guide:
· Self-driving: The Jiumian Expressway is fully open. It takes about 2.5 hours from Mianyang to the Baima Tibetan Township exit, and about 3.5 hours from Chengdu. After exiting the highway, the road is paved, and there is free parking at the ancient village entrance.
