The ginkgo trees at Quanzhou Chengtian Temple have turned yellow
If you miss it, you'll have to wait another year!!
This year, the time to enjoy the ginkgo at Chengtian Temple is later than in previous years. The ginkgo will probably end next weekend, so those who want to see the ginkgo should hurry up~
Chengtian Temple, second only to Kaiyuan Temple in scale~ Hidden in the bustling city but able to find peace in the noise, the temple is full of incense, well maintained everywhere, without any sense of decay, it is worth spending time to experience slowly.

Quanzhou for architecture & culture lovers !
Vibrant city to enjoy for at least 2 days for culture, architecture and food.
Few worth it half-day trips around doable by didi.
Active by day and night !
Visit the temple of the Queen of heaven in the morning then hang out around and through its southern streets during market time. Go back after sunset for a busy and messy atmosphere.
Go to Kaiyuan temple in the afternoon and hang out on Xi jie, have tea and watch the sunset from one of the rooftop. Favorite one Baishui Haoxi, a nice-edgy renovated Republic of China building (around 1930).
Get lost in the small streets and you will see small family temples built at every other corner.
Other great temples, Confucian temple, Chengtian temple, Tonghuai temple, to see both by day and pass by by night.
Stay at the Dongmian inn nearby the Chengtian temple, great host and ideal location.
A half-day trip to Xunpucun is easy by didi, this village has old houses with walls built out of oysters shell, unique.
Good destination for seafood and fish. A must try is also the ginger duck, a stewed duck long-cooked in iron pot with tones of ginger.

Chengtian Temple, located on Nanjun Road, also known as Yuetai Temple, is an ancient temple built in the Five Dynasties. Its status is no less than that of Kaiyuan Temple. It is rare that it is quietly located in the downtown area. It does not stand like a general Zen house, posing a high-cold posture, but more like a quiet garden. The most important thing is that there are no tickets here. Outside the temple, it is the lively Nanjun Lane. However, as soon as I stepped into the platform, I was isolated and noisy. The branches and leaves of the big banyan tree are covered with stone roads. With the sunshine, the heart is quiet.

A lesser-known temple in Fujian, even more serene than the Lingyin Temple
In China, besides the Lingyin Temple, there are actually many temples, both large and small. However, due to their popularity and fame not being as widespread as Hangzhou's Lingyin Temple, not many people know about them. In Fujian, there is a temple that is little known to the public. It is even more serene than the Lingyin Temple, and there is no admission fee and not many visitors! Curious friends might ask, where exactly is this lesser-known temple in Fujian? What are the secrets that are not known to the public? With these questions and curiosity, today let's talk about the stories of the Chengtian Temple in Quanzhou. Chengtian Temple, also known as Yuetai Temple, is located at 36 Nanjun Road, Licheng District, Quanzhou City, Fujian Province. The Chengtian Temple was originally the South Garden of the military governor Liu Congxiao during the Five Dynasties, and the temple was built from the end of the Baoda period to the beginning of the Zhongxing period of the Southern Tang Dynasty, initially named 'Nan Chan Temple'. In the fourth year of the Jingde reign of the Northern Song Dynasty, it was granted the name Chengtian Temple. The existing temple buildings were reconstructed in the 30th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1692). Quanzhou has many ancient temples, but Chengtian Temple is still one of the more famous ones, second only to the Kaiyuan Temple in terms of fame. Its environment is quiet and serene, a rare place of tranquility in the bustling city. The overall architectural style of Chengtian Temple is not as ornate and complicated as many Minnan (Southern Fujian) structures.

Chengtian Zen Temple, a place for quiet contemplation
Quanzhou Ancient City Walk, second stop, Chengtian Zen Temple!
Chengtian Temple is located on the east side of Nanjun Alley, opposite Chengtian Lane in Quanzhou. It was originally the South Garden of Li Congxiao, the military governor of the Qingyuan Army during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period.
Chengtian Temple, also known as Yuetai Temple, was initially named 'Nan Zen Temple'. It was built during the last years of the Baoda era to the early years of the Zhongxing era of the Southern Tang Dynasty. In the fourth year of the Jingde era of the Northern Song Dynasty, it was granted the name Chengtian Temple. The existing temple buildings were reconstructed in the thirtieth year of the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty. Along with Kaiyuan Temple and Chongfu Temple, it is known as one of the three great monasteries in Quanzhou. It is also the place where Master Hongyi preached and spread the Dharma.
The gate of Chengtian Temple faces east to west, with the Yuetai at the entrance, and a vertical plaque with the characters 'Yuetai' hanging high. Entering the mountain gate, there is no worship pavilion, but a long and quiet path. The buildings along the central axis are the Hall of Heavenly Kings, Maitreya Hall, Mahavira Hall, Dharma Hall, and Manjusri Hall. In front of the Mahavira Hall, there are two 'life release ponds' with many turtles that have been set free.
The overall architectural style of Chengtian Temple is not as ornate and complex as typical Southern Fujian architecture. The temple structures are scattered, and the temple is planted with more than two hundred plants such as banyan trees, willow trees, and longan trees, nestled among the various halls and pavilions. Although the incense is not as strong as in Kaiyuan Temple, it wins in tranquility! Here, one can stroll in the temple or sit quietly under a tree, read a book, daydream, listen to the subtle chanting, smell the faint scent of incense, and let the restless heart gradually settle!

🛕 Chengtian Temple in Quanzhou is located on the east side of Nanjun Lane, opposite Chengtian Alley in the city center, also known as Yuetai Temple. Since the Song Dynasty, it has been popular and bustling with people. Continuing to this day, it still attracts a large number of tourists and pilgrims.
🌟 Quiet Amidst the Bustle
Even in the city center, as you walk deeper along the path, it quickly becomes quiet. I recommend taking your time here, wandering and pausing, slowing down to feel the rare tranquility and leisure in the courtyard.
🌟 Ten Exquisite Views
The shade of banyan trees at noon, the cool breeze under pines, no birds resting on the pagoda, the bright moon over the jade platform, the morning sun through the rolled-up blinds, the evening rain pushing through the pampas, the plum shadows on the square pond, the bamboo sounds in the howling hermitage, the evening clouds over Ying Mountain, the stones resembling parrots—quietly observe and feel the superb craftsmanship of ancient artisans and their beautiful implications.
🌟 Long History
The grand and majestic main hall with its hanging eaves and flying corners exudes historical heritage within this thousand-year-old courtyard. The scenery is winding and surrounded by green velvet stone railings and landscape courtyards. Chengtian Temple has three treasures that protect the temple: the bronze Buddha statue, the Great Compassion Hall, and the ancient pagoda that 'flew in'. All are national protected cultural relics.
🛕 A place of purity and quiet, stroll slowly, feel the historical and cultural atmosphere, look carefully, feel the tranquility, and you will be full of surprises.

Quanzhou Hidden Gem: A Secluded Temple to Escape the Crowds and Listen in Peace
🍂 Zhu Xi once exclaimed, 'This place was anciently known as the land of Buddha, where saints fill the streets'—Quanzhou, a sacred land of religion.
Here lies the renowned Kaiyuan Temple, the earliest Islamic mosque, the largest martial temple in Fujian, the ever-burning Taoist temples, and ubiquitous Christian churches. Various religions coexist and flourish together here.
🍂 Quanzhou is home to numerous treasure temples, big and small, scattered throughout the streets and alleys.
🍂 My favorite is the Chengtian Temple. Although it is one of the three major temples in Quanzhou, it is less known than Kaiyuan Temple, making it a peaceful sanctuary. Upon entering, you are greeted by a row of pagodas, with Master Hongyi's Moon Terrace Hermitage on the left, and at the end, the main hall houses an ancient Buddha statue with a powerful aura. Standing outside the hall, one can hear the monks chanting, compelling you to stop and listen. Red bricks, yellow walls, green bamboo, and the universal light of Buddha make everything seem just right.
🍂 Taking a different path: If you're not too particular about gourmet food, the local snacks are unlikely to disappoint. Spend more time experiencing the local atmosphere, explore less popular spots, and avoid the crowds.
PS: Quanzhou's city area is dotted with tourist electric battery cars known as 'Little White,' which you can hail and stop at will for just 2 yuan, and the service attitude is exceptionally good.

Quanzhou | Moon Platform Courtyard, Chengtian Zen Temple
Chengtian Temple has gone through a thousand years, growing ever larger in scale, second only to Kaiyuan Temple. Despite being in the heart of the ancient city, it is exceptionally tranquil, like a pure land in the midst of the hustle and bustle.
"Beyond the long pavilion, beside the ancient road, the fragrant grass is emerald reaching the sky..." Master Hongyi, who wrote 'Farewell', once lived in the 'Moon Platform Courtyard' within the temple, hence Chengtian Temple is also known as 'Moon Platform Temple'.
The towering banyan trees with their cloud-like canopies, the monks coming and going in the corridors, the pigeons strolling leisurely, the turtles in the release pond basking on the rocks in the sun.
From the primary school separated by a wall from the temple, the clear sound of reading can be heard, the wind is flowing, time is still, and everything is so peaceful and beautiful.

Quanzhou Nanny-Level Photography Guide
"This place was once known as the Land of Buddha, where saints roam the streets."
How should one best describe Quanzhou? Here, mortals live alongside deities, with temples every few steps and halls every few paces. The incense rising from these temples carries the prayers of the people. Here, ancient houses coexist with foreign-style buildings, marking the starting point of the Song and Yuan dynasties' Maritime Silk Road. The merchant ships setting sail from the bay carry the determination of Fujian merchants to strive for greatness at sea.
Just this past weekend, I visited the ancient city of Quanzhou, known as the 'office of the gods on earth,' and experienced the 'half city of fireworks, half city of immortals' lifestyle. The city is packed with attractions, making it perfect for weekend trips!
Here are some excellent photo spots in the old city:
Photo 1️⃣: 📍On the rooftop of Rui Bai·Yun Hotel on West Street of Quanzhou Bell Tower. Due to its popularity, the rooftop is now only open to hotel guests, so I chose to stay at this hotel. The location is excellent, with the Bell Tower and West Street just a five-minute walk away. The overall accommodation experience is on par with a standard express hotel, with slightly higher prices on weekends and holidays.
Photo 2️⃣: 📍The rooftop of Mei Chao Feng Store No.1 on West Street. There's no minimum consumption required to access the rooftop, but you may have to queue for a spot.
Photo 3️⃣: 📍The rooftop café of You Li on West Street. There's a 'gatekeeper' at the corner of the stairs leading to the rooftop, requiring a minimum spend of 20 yuan per person. A staff member checks the receipt before allowing entry. Compared to Mei Chao Feng, You Li is closer to the Twin Towers and offers an additional 'heart-shaped' photo spot.
Photo 4️⃣: 📍The Bell Tower intersection has heavy traffic and pedestrian flow. It's safer to take photos from West Street towards the department store, as there will be fewer people in the frame.
Photo 5️⃣: 📍The incense burner in the courtyard of Chengtian Zen Temple. Using the hollow part of the incense burner as a framing device, you can capture the main hall perfectly, and adding a person in the foreground can create a Zen-like atmosphere in the picture!
Photo 6️⃣: 📍The entrance of Chengtian Zen Temple. Take photos from the front hall towards the outside; when the entrance is less crowded, quickly capture the shot.
Photo 7️⃣: 📍The Quanzhou Wujiao Hua Company Bell Tower Shop. Enter through a very narrow entrance just below the shop's signboard. It's recommended to bring a small light source to make photos of silhouettes even cooler!
Photo 8️⃣: 📍The alley next to Quanzhou Film and Drama Theatre. It's perfect for women with flower hairpins to take photos, with the character and the word 'Quanzhou' complementing each other in the background and foreground. When I went to take photos, there happened to be four women with flower hairpins who happily agreed to be in the picture, resulting in a very distinctive photo.
Photo 9️⃣: 📍In front of Juruo·West Street. The most commonly seen online is the Quanzhou calendar wall, which is actually just a poster on the wall of the courtyard, already showing noticeable wrinkles and stains. Personally, I think the bamboo lantern installation next to it is more photogenic, with words like 'Quanzhou,' 'Licheng,' 'Zhao Cai' (attract wealth), and so on.

🚄: Departure from various places —— Quanzhou Station
🏠: We chose a place that combines a small coffee bar with accommodation
West Street and Kaiyuan Temple nearby are both fine. It seems that if you don't go to the seaside area, the attractions in Quanzhou are quite close, so there's no need to specifically choose the center
🛵: We chose to rent a small electric scooter, which was quite comfortable and convenient
Often saw little white bikes on the road, they should also be convenient, I saw many people recommending them
🗺️:
DAY1:
Head to the hotel to rest a bit, then rent a car to go out for food —— 【West Street】First, have some 【Taro Cake】【Auntie's Chicken Ribs】and the like —— 【Berry Super Crazy Rooftop】check in for the full view —— Come out and eat 【Chun Ge Teppanyaki】's ginkgo across the street —— 【Bell Tower】 —— 【Auntie Hou's Rice Dumplings】 —— Went for a drink, have to say it's a whole street of bars, just pick any and it's great —— 【Dongxing Beef Shop】 —— Return trip
DAY2:
Breakfast at 【Shuiguo Men Rice Noodle Paste】 —— On the way to West Street, stumbled upon 【Kun Ji Taro Cake】so delicious, even shipped some home —— After doing makeup, went to 【Hairpin Flowers】directly found a shop on West Street, very nice! —— 【Kaiyuan Temple】take photos with hairpin flowers —— 【Quanzhou Puppet Theatre】watch a puppet show, remember to book in advance, super hard to get, personally I suggest if you're not too into it just get a 30 yuan ticket to have a look —— On the way back, bought some sour stuff
DAY3:
Breakfast at the 【Mashed Potato Noodles】we saw in the alley before, also had fried vegetable cakes —— 【Guan Yue Temple】to draw lots —— 【Chengtian Zen Temple】suggest to visit with Kaiyuan Temple, taking photos with hairpin flowers there will also look good, mainly because it rained on the second day —— Pack up and head out to see Jie Jie's concert

Overview of Chengtian Temple
Chengtian Temple is located on the east side of Nanjun Alley, opposite Chengtian Lane in the center of Quanzhou City, Fujian Province. Also known as Yuetai Temple, it was originally named 'Nanzen Temple'. It was built during the last year of the Baoda era to the beginning of the Zhongxing era of the Southern Tang Dynasty (957-958 AD). Chengtian Temple | Immersive experience of temple culture~ Beautiful and magnificent, the beauty of ancient architecture~
Chengtian Temple is located on the east side of Nanjun Lane opposite Chengtian Lane in the center of Quanzhou City, also known as Yuetai Temple. It's hard to imagine that such a vast temple is hidden inside a temple gate that is not conspicuous on the fashionable Nanjun Road.
Chengtian Temple was originally the southern garden of the Five Dynasties' Jiedushi Liu Congxiao, and the temple was built from the end of the Baoda period of the Southern Tang Dynasty to the beginning of the Zhongxing period, initially named 'Nan Chan Temple'. In the fourth year of the Jingde period of the Northern Song Dynasty, it was renamed Chengtian Temple, and the existing temple was rebuilt in the 30th year of the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty (1692).
The Daxiong Hall of Chengtian Temple is a five-entry deep building with a hanging mountain top and double eaves, which is majestic and solemn. The corridor starts from the Drum Tower and Nanjing Drum Tower, and there is a nearly 150-meter-long wooden plank road on both sides, connecting the Maitreya Hall, Daxiong Hall, and Dharma Hall. The corridor Buddha statue gallery has a unique style with reddish bas-relief patterns reaching more than two meters and twenty-four heavenly images. Inside the hall, there are two banyan trees with a crown diameter of about 200 years, and other various green plants in the temple also make this place more refreshing.
There are also some pigeons in the temple that are not afraid of people. This was also once the place where Master Hongyi preached and preached. The mountain gate pillar has a couplet written by Master Hongyi: 'There is boundless freedom, enter the non-dual Dharma gate.' Inside the temple, you can also find the 'place where Master Hongyi reincarnated'. But what is more worth going to is the small hill behind the reincarnation place, where you can sit and read, making people linger. You can also sit under the big banyan tree in a daze, listening to the subtle chanting, smelling the faint incense, and letting the restless heart settle down.
Tickets🎫: Free
🎫Free to the public
⏰05:00—17:00🈺Stop entering after 16:30
🚌You can take multiple buses in the city to the 'Chengtian Temple' station
Play time: Half an hour is enough
🌟 Tour highlights:
1⃣Mountain gate: (Temple entrance) The word 'Yuetai' is hung on the door, and on both sides is the couplet written by Master Hongyi 'There is boundless freedom, enter the non-dual Dharma gate'.
2⃣Seven Buddha Pagodas and 'Quannan Buddha Country': After passing the mountain gate, there is a long east-west corridor. Under the huge banyan tree, there are seven stone pagodas standing, known as the Seven Buddha Pagodas. At the end of the corridor, the four big characters 'Quannan Buddha Country' on the wall were written by Zhang Ruitu, one of the four great calligraphers of the Ming Dynasty.
3⃣Yuetai Branch: The residence of Master Hongyi. 'Outside the long pavilion, beside the ancient road, the fragrant grass is green and connected to the sky...' This song written by Master Hongyi (Li Shutong) has been sung for a hundred years. Master Hongyi has a deep connection with Chengtian Temple. The last 14 years of his life were spent in Quanzhou, his household registration was in Chengtian Temple, this was his most common residence, and also his reincarnation place (cremation place).
3⃣The treasure of the temple-Sui Dynasty bronze cast Amitabha Buddha: Enshrined in the Dharma Hall, the statue is two meters high and weighs more than a ton, which is rare in China.
4⃣Song Dynasty stone sutra pagoda: In front of the Wenshu Hall after the Dharma Hall, the carving is exquisite and basically well preserved. It is octagonal, about 7 meters high, and carves the Zunsheng Sutra (but most of them have been weathered and peeled off), and the bas-reliefs include Buddha statues, lotus petals, mountain and water wave patterns, etc.
5⃣Ying Mountain: A small hill in the temple, one of the famous old eight scenes of Quanzhou 'Ying Mountain Evening Cloud' is here. Although Ying Mountain is not high, it only takes a few steps to reach the top, but it can also take in the scattered red tiles and colorful ridge decorations inside Chengtian Temple.

【Settle- Incense】|I don't understand what it means, but I really love the color - Quanzhou - Chengtian Temple
Chengtian Temple has been repaired and destroyed many times, and after a thousand years, its architectural scale has become larger and larger, and it is known as one of the 'Three Great Jungles of Quanzhou' along with Kaiyuan Temple and Chongfu Temple.
The Chengtian Temple we see now was rebuilt on the original site in 1985. Chengtian Temple has a quiet environment and is quite like a city forest, which is a rare garden edge in the bustling city.

The overall atmosphere is very good. When I went there, I encountered the temple's activities, which were solemn and solemn, and I really liked this sense of solemnity. A sense of awe arises spontaneously. Highly recommend to go for a visit.

Quanzhou Travel|This homestay next to Balang Fish allows me to integrate into local life
It is said that Quanzhou is a city that one must visit at least once in a lifetime, so staying in a homestay and experiencing the local life is also a must.
So how to choose a homestay full of local atmosphere and also have a comfortable accommodation experience? I found one—"Bantiao Homestay".
🌟Highlight features:
Located in the quiet in the hustle and bustle, the culture is intertwined in the alley, both adjacent to the quiet Chengtian Zen Temple, and in the center of all kinds of specialty shops, it is really the best experience of half the city's fireworks and half the city's fairy.
In the morning, have a hot old-fashioned peanut soup for breakfast in the alley, and then go to Chengtian Temple for a walk and stroll.
In the afternoon, when you are tired, have a cup of coffee at the Balang Fish Coffee Shop opposite, or look at the sunset of the old city from the rooftop of the homestay. This is the comfort of travel.
🛏Room facilities:
The room is spacious and bright, with a log style, comfortable and textured. The old city scenery outside the window has the taste of Minnan architecture. You can also see the top of a church. Stealing half a day's leisure, enjoying the wind and falling leaves at Chengtian Temple
This deep tour of Quanzhou, a whole day was given to the ancient city. 🌈The ancient city is located in Licheng District, in a 6.4 square kilometer area, there are 8 world heritage sites, 8 national key cultural relics protection units, and countless local cultural relics...🌟These numerous ancient buildings densely present the world's multicultural and religious culture of Quanzhou during the Song and Yuan dynasties, which is amazing!
♦️Among so many historical relics, Chengtian Temple left a deep impression on me. Originally it was not in my itinerary, when I visited the Memorial Hall of Master Hongyi in Kaiyuan Temple, I learned that after the master passed away on October 13, 1942, he was reincarnated in Chengtian Temple, so I left Kaiyuan Temple and went to Chengtian Temple along West Street.
🌸Chengtian Temple, a Zen temple, was built during the Xiande period of the Later Zhou Dynasty of the Five Dynasties (AD 954-959), and was named Yuetai Chengtian Zen Temple by the court in the fourth year of the Southern Song Dynasty Jingde, and has the reputation of 'the first temple in southern Fujian'.
👉The narrow and quiet corridor is located in a bustling residential area, on one side of the corridor is the Seven Buddha Stone Pagoda created by Zen Master Zuzhen during the Song Shaoxing period, which seems to remind me that I have arrived at Chengtian Temple. ⤴️Turning into the small mountain gate, the spacious courtyard, tall and solemn buildings, dense trees inside, form a strong contrast with the 'narrowness' outside the mountain gate.
I like Chengtian Temple😀🌸Maybe it's because it's too quiet here, one door and two heavens, the outside noise is instantly isolated, listening to the wind and falling leaves, placing my heart at will; 🌸It may also be because the place where the master was reincarnated makes people feel 'good understanding without obstacles, forever peace'; 🌸It may also be because of that big white rabbit who is leisurely and at ease🐰...
