Osaka is a bustling city that never sleeps. After the sun sets, the city comes alive with an energy that’s impossible to ignore. From its bright neon lights to its lively streets.
📍Dotonbori District
One of the best places to start exploring Osaka by night is Dotonbori. This iconic area is known for its lively atmosphere, bright signs, and mouthwatering street food. Take a walk along the street and be mesmerized by the famous Glico running man sign. The streets are lined with restaurants and bars, and the aromas of local delicacies like takoyaki and okonomiyaki fill the air. There are also many shops for some retail therapy.
📍Shinsekai District
The Shinsekai district is famous for its colourful signs and bustling streets. Take a walk to the Tsutenkaku Tower and see the famous Billiken statue, which is said to bring good luck to those who rub its feet.
For a taste of traditional Japanese culture, head to an izakaya. These small bars offer a cosy atmosphere where you can sample local dishes and drinks like sake and shochu. There are plenty of street food around too & expect long queues for the popular stalls.

Posing with 89YO poster
Iconic Glico poster in Dotonburi is 89YO!
A must do photo taking spot with it when passing by the Dotonburi street. Definitely not counted as "been to Osaka" if you have not taken it.
Everyday there is a light up from after sunset to midnight with 100 over LED lights. So it is good to stay there and wait for the lights up to have a better experience of the whole poster. The feel is definitely different!

Japan Travels: The Glico Running Man in Osaka
#wheretogo
We finally visited the most popular spot in Osaka, the Glico Man billboard is a must to visit in Dotonbori district and to take the winning pose together with it. The street is filled with many tourists and locals wandering around to enjoy the market food along the river. The place also offers boat rides for people to enjoy the cruise along on the river and enjoy the great city views.
If it’s hard to get a good photo taken on the busy walking paths, there is a secret spot just opposite of the Glico Man, an small entrance to enter and you will see a few people queuing to get a photo taken in a “running track” scene with an awesome view at the back.
The area is also filled with small food vendors everywhere selling delicious takoyaki, 10 yen cheese coin, shabu shabu and more!
We got the famous Cremia softserve ice cream along the riverside, it was super yummy.
The Shinsaibashi-Suji Shopping Street is also just located right beside the Dotonbori riverfront, it’s a long street filled with many local/branded shops to explore, be ready to shop till you drop!

Glico Running Man at Dotonbori
The Glico Man is the symbol of south Osaka. This sign, advertising popular Japanese snack maker Glico, was put up in 1935 and remodelled in 2014, maintaining the old design but adding new LED lights and animations that change with the time of day. The best photo-op spots are on the adjacent Ebisu Bridge or across the river on the Tonbori Riverwalk.
The back story (the Japanese love a backstory) to why the running man was chosen to be Glico’s mascot is said to derived from Gilco’s first product, a candy caramel. Company founder Ri-ichi Ezaki created the snack in 1922 as an energy product by adding glycogen from oysters to the snack. It was said each treat could give you energy to run 300 metres, so a running man has been used to this day as the companies mascot and logo.#glico #osakatravel
