The Beauty of Kunming's Jacaranda: A Dreamlike Purple Sea of Flowers and a Scenic Romance
In the streets of Kunming, the jacaranda trees unfold like a dreamy scroll. Tall jacaranda trees are neatly lined up, with their canopies laden with strings of blue-purple flowers, resembling a purple cloud spreading across the sky. The flowers, delicate and bell-shaped, shimmer with a mysterious light under the sun.
When a gentle breeze blows, petals of the jacaranda flutter down like a purple rain, dancing lightly in the air before softly landing on the ground, forming a soft purple carpet. The streets are adorned with jacaranda, as if stepping into a fairy-tale world, filled with romance and poetry.
Looking up, the blue-purple sea of flowers contrasts with the azure sky, creating a stunningly beautiful scene. Sunlight filters through the gaps in the flowers, casting mottled shadows and creating a blurred and dreamy atmosphere. The air is filled with the faint fragrance of jacaranda, intoxicating and refreshing, as if the entire world is enveloped in the beauty of the jacaranda, making one marvel at the magic and wonder of nature.

Jacaranda | Kunming's Romantic Purple
If there really is a door that leads wherever the heart desires, I would set my gaze upon Kunming in May. In this season, the city, blooming with flowers, seems like the earth's celebration of life, and the romantic purple jacaranda trees are the most moving poem of this city.
Many cities have jacaranda trees, but few are cloaked in a purple haze like Kunming, especially with hundreds of trees linked together, decades old, with large and dense canopies, strong and shapely branches, blooming continuously along the streets, by the rivers, and beside the railway tracks, swaying in the wind, dreamlike and heart-stirring. Unlike the newly planted jacarandas in many places that grow wildly towards the sky without charm, Kunming's jacarandas hang their branches low, more intimate with people, with a charming beauty that wins over countless fans.
The blooming period of Kunming's jacaranda is from mid-April to around May 20th each year. Although it is now nearing the end, it is still beautiful!
💎Check-in spots:
There are many check-in spots for Kunming's jacaranda, with the most concentrated and characteristic ones being Jiaochang Middle Road, Panlong River/Binjiang West Road, Spring City Road, Oil Pipe Bridge, Iron Sheet Alley/Caiyun Li, etc.
🗓️As time enters mid-May, the jacarandas on Jiaochang Middle Road still stubbornly embrace their last blooms. Although the season is late and the flowers may be wilting, they still fearlessly bloom towards the sunlight.
🌧️The jacarandas by the Panlong River, following a downpour, fell in abundance. Those purple petals, like groups of sprites, danced in the air, gently falling into the clear river water, putting a tender full stop to this spring.
🌸Flower Status Update
✅The jacarandas on Jiaochang Middle Road have become sparser, but you can still take nice photos. The road is no longer restricted, but be careful not to walk onto the road and obstruct traffic when taking pictures.
✅The jacarandas by the Panlong River are basically gone, so there's no need to rush to this spot anymore.
🎊Fashion Tips
For women, it's best to wear light-colored, thin, and flowing dresses in white or similar shades for a more ethereal beauty. Bring various umbrellas, hats, flower crowns, bouquets, dolls, balloons, and the popular ten-yuan cultural ice cream at hot check-in spots, which are also great for creating an atmosphere.
The flowers are still in bloom, so why not go on an impromptu purple dream-seeking journey? High-speed trains are convenient, no need to wait another year with longing!

The Jacaranda Trees on Jiaochang Middle Road in Kunming
In the urban greening of Kunming, jacaranda trees can be seen everywhere, such as at Cuihu, Beijing Road, Guannan Avenue, along the banks of the Panlong River, at the Dianchi Lake International Convention and Exhibition Center, Jinning...
Jiaochang Middle Road is located in the old city area, where the roads are narrow. The jacaranda trees planted along the road have grown large over time, perfectly achieving a canopy where branches hold each other's hands without being so dense as to block the scattering of sunlight, creating a purple dreamy kaleidoscope. Coupled with the plateau's azure sky and white clouds, it's the most photogenic scene.
Only after visiting did I understand why some people exclaim: The jacaranda trees on Jiaochang Middle Road are divine in my eyes (The beauty of being there is something a camera can't capture)
The essence of the viewing route is just over 1 kilometer long. I went there during the May Day holiday, and because there were too many tourists, the road was closed to traffic and turned into a pedestrian street, with all sightseeing vehicles suspended.
Walking among the trees, the color of the jacaranda changes with the sunlight, more purple when facing the light, and more red against the light. So before taking a photo, it's better to find the direction of the light source for a more beautiful shot.
Where there are many people, there are stories. Posed passers-by, enthusiastic photographers soliciting business, duty officers, and children with undivided attention... It shows that even the most beautiful scenery comes alive because of people! So don't worry about the crowd, the more the merrier
🚌 Bus stop: Jiaochang Intersection (Xuefu Road) 10 (starting from Nanping Street), 65, 70, 83 (starting from Kunming Railway Station)
🚇 Subway Line 4 Sujia Tang C exit, walk to Jiaochang Intersection
⏳ Best viewing period: From late April to early May each year
🍽 Dining recommendations: There are many snack shops on Xuefu Road
📷 Photography: Camera is better than mobile phone | Find the light source direction first, shoot with the light, avoid backlighting | Have people stand on higher ground, and the photographer shoot from a lower angle to perfectly avoid the tourists

My goodness, I flew 2000km to Kunming for the Jacaranda! The romantic universe has materialized
I took a flight to Hangzhou, then a 6-hour layover to Kunming, with no other arrangements, I headed straight for the 'Jiaochang Middle Road' top trending Jacaranda trees❗
✅Status of the flowers on May 7th:
1. Still in full bloom! 🉑 Charge!
The best viewing period should have been during the May Day holiday, but today the canopy is slightly withered, and the fullness and density are not as high, yet taking beautiful photos is absolutely no problem.
2. The Jacaranda bus🚌 is also available! 🉑 Take it!
Just search for 'Lotus Pond Parking Lot', 25 yuan per person, each ticket comes with 1 cultural and creative IP ice cream (sold separately in stores for 10-12 yuan). Make sure to sit in the sightseeing spot, watch out for low-hanging flowers⚠️, don't get scratched, and definitely 🙅🏻♀️ do not pick the flowers.
✅Photography tips:
1. 📸 Photography: The whole street on-site is for portrait photography, seems like 10 yuan per photo, I didn't ask specifically because the local photographers arranged ladders🪜, and the portraits turned out quite well.
2. 👗 Outfit: I suggest light colors, I wore a sapphire blue T-shirt and was completely bare-faced, which didn't stand out at all👋🏻. On-site, those wearing white dresses and straw hats seemed quite nice.
3. ⚠️ Traffic: Since the whole road is open to normal vehicle traffic, be careful when trying to take symmetrical compositions by walking to the middle!
4. 👒 Props: Having props for taking photos of the flowers can enhance the atmosphere. We bought fridge magnets + ice cream. There are many creative cultural products on-site, you can choose according to your needs. Additionally, there are 5 yuan flower crowns and 3 yuan jasmine flower bracelets which are also great🥹
✅Time arrangement:
14:50 Arrived at the intersection of Jiaochang Middle Road, started taking photos along the road
15:40 Finished the most lush section, ready to catch the sightseeing bus
16:10 Got the sightseeing bus ticket, with a bus every half hour, departing around 16:30, a round trip on Jiaochang Middle Road takes about 20 minutes
17:00 Took a taxi to the airport to catch the 19:15 flight
———We took our time and loved taking photos, it took about 2 hours in total😎——

The Jacaranda is exclusively romantic to Kunming
💐Half of it is occupied by fresh flowers.||This city introduced me to the Jacaranda, and during my few days in Kunming, I happened to witness the full bloom of these trees. Taking a taxi to Jiaochang Middle Road, I was already wowed from afar by the purple flower corridor, it was really, really beautiful!!!
A sightseeing car tour costs 💰25RMB, which includes a creative ice cream, and it's recommended that if two people are together, they choose different designs. The whole journey takes about ten minutes and you will return to the starting point, it's suggested to take the car tour first and then walk it again.
This street is truly worth savoring, capturing the exclusive spring romance of Kunming. Along the way, there are many photo spots, and some market stalls offer free 🆓 stamps, 🉑️ you can bring your own notebook to stamp or buy a postcard 🎑 next to it.

Flower Viewing Guide:
📍Jiaochang Middle Road
The approximately two-kilometer-long Jiaochang Middle Road is lined with Jacaranda trees, which are older and have dense canopies. In recent years, a special open-top Jacaranda bus line has been set up for tourists to enjoy the flowers, making the flower viewing experience here the richest and also the most popular photo spot. The Jacaranda bus operates from 8:00 to 19:00, with a ticket price of 25 yuan per person, including a Jacaranda ice cream. It runs back and forth on the most densely flowered section of Jiaochang Middle Road, with a round trip taking about half an hour. The signs are clear and visible, and the boarding and alighting points are near the intersection of Jiaochang Middle Road and Xuefu Road. Traffic control on Jiaochang Middle Road is not strict, and it is crowded with people and vehicles. The trees are tall, so it is not easy to take portraits here. You either avoid peak times or bring a stool for close-up portrait shots. Jiaochang Middle Road allows and is suitable for drone photography, but there is significant interference from nearby residential areas, so fly with caution.
📍Panlong River
Jacaranda blooms along the Panlong River, from Nantai Bridge in Wuhua District northward to Youguan Bridge in Panlong District, with fewer people than Jiaochang Middle Road. The Jacaranda is mainly on the west bank of the Panlong River, so the east bank is suitable for landscape photography, and the west bank for portraits. You can play from Jiangbin West Road all the way to Youguan Bridge.
📍Youguan Bridge
There is only one large Jacaranda here, but its feature is that it is located next to the cross-river railway bridge, so you can take pictures of people standing on the railway with the flowers. However, the railway sleepers are hollowed out, and you need to be careful when walking and shooting when there are many people. Navigate to the Kunming Branch of Yunnan Province Hydrology and Water Resources Bureau.
📍Jiangbin West Road
The Jacaranda on the Panlong River is mainly planted on the west bank, along Jiangbin West Road, with the blooming Jacaranda mainly located near the intersection of Jiangbin West Road and Renmin Middle Road, navigate to Hongcheng Square. Here the flower crowns are relatively low, suitable for portrait photography, and you can also take pictures of the Jacaranda by the water from the east bank to the west bank, which is also suitable for drone photography and is great for leisurely photo-taking.
Play Tips:
1⃣️During the flower viewing period, it can get congested, so it's more convenient to travel by public transport or shared bicycles;
2⃣️For photography, choosing white, purple, or blue dresses will stand out more; Kunming's weather is dry this season, so be sure to moisturize and protect yourself from the sun;
3⃣️Please be mindful of the environment when enjoying the flowers, and do not break or bend the plants.

Although the name of the Jacaranda Theme Park is a park, it is actually a road. It is usually not crowded, but when the jacarandas are in full bloom, the traffic is congested, and the crowds are bustling. This place should be the location with the highest number of people punching in for jacarandas.
The jacaranda trees here are old, with large canopies, numerous and dense, evenly distributed on both sides of the street; suitable for aerial photography, street scenes, photos of jacaranda special buses and platforms, etc!
In particular, the section from the intersection of Xuefu Road and Jiaochang Middle Road to the nearby three-way intersection of North Lianhua Pavilion, and the section of the road going forward along Zhong Road to the Jiaochang North Road intersection, are both very dense with jacarandas and offer great views!
Taking portraits is actually great anywhere, because it is now the peak blooming season, the flowers are very dense and plentiful, using them as a background along with the crowds on the streets, you can take pictures with a great sense of depth and liveliness!
On both sides of Jiaochang Middle Road, there are numerous shops, and the food is also diverse, with the most characteristic probably being the 'Jacaranda Popsicle', which has a unique and novel shape and is very popular with tourists.
If you haven't come to punch in yet, you should hurry, as the blooming period is about to end around the 10th, and if you miss it, you'll have to wait another year!
Travel Route:

💖Jacaranda is native to the Americas and was introduced to Kunming in the 1980s. After more than 30 years of 'thriving growth', the figure of Jacaranda can now be seen everywhere in Kunming, and Jiaochang Middle Road is definitely the internet-famous road for Jacaranda in Kunming! The blue and purple petals on both sides of the road complement each other, colorful and particularly romantic and charming.
💗To appreciate the Jacaranda in Kunming, simply navigate to the 'Jacaranda Theme Park', and you will arrive at this purple-blue world on Jiaochang Middle Road. The blue blossoms light up Kunming
🪻 At the end of April, the jacaranda trees bloom in the Spring City, and Jiaochang Middle Road has almost become the most beautiful street in all of China. The old jacaranda trees on both sides of the street twist for hundreds of meters, and their canopies have stitched together in the air, a rare sight that is truly too beautiful for words.
👉Location: Jiaochang Middle Road
🚴Transportation Advice
It is recommended to take a taxi or a shared electric bike. The road is busy with many cars and people, slightly better on workdays, but extremely crowded on weekends. Parking is not very convenient, and it can get very congested.
🚌Sightseeing Bus
The bus boarding area is located next to the traffic light at the intersection of Xuefu Road and Jiaochang Road, costing 25 yuan per person, including a round-trip ticket and a cultural and creative ice cream. Queues are required, but the wait is not too long.
💡The riding experience scores 90 points, allowing you to feel the breath of summer up close. What you see with your eyes is more beautiful than in photos, making it worth the experience. Friends who like it should not miss out.

Come experience the charm of the Jacaranda Avenue at night
From mid-April to early May each year, the Jacaranda trees on Jiaochang Road in Kunming bloom, turning the entire street into a purple sea. In recent years, to create a distinctive street, Wuhua District of Kunming has renovated and upgraded Jiaochang Middle Road. In 2020, on the basis of the existing 250-plus Jacaranda trees, 301 more were planted, bringing the total number of Jacaranda trees on Jiaochang Middle Road to 551, making it a beautiful highlight of Kunming's tourism. During the day, there are too many people coming here to enjoy the flowers, so it might be better to take a walk here at night for a different kind of charm. If you like it, come and check in.

Encounter romance with the Jacarandas in Kunming
After the first sentence, encounter a purple dream in Kunming. Walking on the Jacaranda Boulevard, it feels like being in a fairy tale world. On both sides of the street, tall jacaranda trees are neatly arranged, their canopies interlacing to form a natural purple tunnel. The sunlight filters through the treetops, casting mottled light and shadow on the ground, as if nature has carefully arranged a light and shadow effect.
With the gentle breeze, petals fall with the wind, like purple butterflies dancing in the air. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and you can almost smell the faint fragrance of the petals, which is the scent of spring, fresh, sweet, and refreshing.
Strolling through this purple sea, you can feel the wonders of nature's craftsmanship. The beauty of the jacaranda is not only in its blossoms but also in the atmosphere it creates. It makes me believe that in this noisy world, there still exists such a pure and romantic place.

Tickets🎫: Free
🚌Transportation: Bus routes 104, 168, 187, and 65 (Route 104 is the Jacaranda special line)
👨👩👧👦It is currently peak season, and the whole street is crowded with people checking in, so be mentally prepared
👍It is recommended to go during the day, as the blue sky and white clouds match well with the Jacaranda trees, making for better photo opportunities. If you want to take pictures of the street, try to avoid the rush hours in the morning and evening
✅The blooming period of Jacaranda is very short, and in China, only Kunming and Xichang are suitable for cultivating Jacaranda. If you encounter the blooming season, you must come and see. Jacaranda belongs to the Bignoniaceae family, is a deciduous flowering tree, and there are about 50 species in the genus worldwide, mostly distributed in South America in countries like Brazil, Bolivia, and Argentina. They prefer a warm, moist, and sunny environment, are not frost-resistant, and the suitable temperature for growth is between 22 to 30 degrees Celsius. They can grow well in both neutral and slightly acidic soils. In China, only the pointed-leaf Jacaranda and Jacaranda are introduced for cultivation. In tropical regions, Jacaranda blooms once at the end of spring and once in autumn, while in Yunnan, it only blooms once.

Kunming City's Guide to Photographing Jacaranda Trees
Recently, the jacaranda trees in Kunming have been blooming competitively, and some areas have already reached their peak blooming period. The number of tourists has gradually increased, and the Jacaranda Market has been open for over a week now. Often, the places are crowded and the trees are so tall that it's hard to know how to take a good photo?
Here are a few spots and angles that I often go to for photography, which I believe will be helpful to you.
⛰【Travel Tips】
Photos 2-7: The Jacaranda Theme Park on Jiaochang Middle Road, just navigate there directly.
Photos 2.3: The highest slope in front of the Kunming University of Science and Technology Affiliated Middle School.
Photos 4567 are taken from the middle of the road, which is the market section.
🌟Highlights: The most Instagrammable street, where you can spend 25 yuan to take a double-decker bus for close-up photography, and there's also an ice cream. The downside is that it's super crowded!
Photos 89: Chun Cheng Road, navigate directly to the Tailong Hongrui Hotel.
🌟Highlights: You can get close to the flowers, but the downside is that you need to climb walls, so be careful.
Photos 10-14: Navigate directly to the Jiatai Hotel on Jiangbin West Road.
🌟Highlights: The flowers on the bridge are quite low and look very beautiful in photos, and it's not crowded. The only downside is that you need to find the right angle to take a good photo. These places are all easy to get good shots!
Photo 15: Cuihu Park.
🌟Highlights: There's a super big tree that hangs down to the water's edge and looks very beautiful!
You can also stroll around Cuihu Lake. The downside is that the angles are somewhat limited.
📷About Angles: The way to avoid crowds is to use various methods of obstruction.
First, use your own body, props, flower walls, and the principle of 'things appear smaller the further away they are.'
Second, use high and low angles, close-ups.
Third, shoot with a large aperture to blur the background.
📌Small Tips: Besides, it doesn't really matter if there are a few people, as long as they are in the distance and not right next to you. If you really don't like having passersby in your photos, you can edit them out later. Also, travel at off-peak times, go out for photography when others are still sleeping in, and you'll find very few people around.
Wishing everyone a happy photography experience and fun. If you really don't want to do it yourself, you can make an appointment with me.
