#Lofoten Island Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Norway | The end of the world, the Lofoten Islands
| The end of the world, the Lofoten Islands. 🇳🇴 Lofoten, a paradise within the Arctic Circle, is rated by National Geographic as the second most beautiful archipelago in the world and described by Lonely Planet as 'breathtakingly beautiful'. It is, along with Senja, one of the most beautiful and worthwhile places to visit in Norway in my opinion!
Who wouldn't yearn for those isolated colorful little houses🏠? Lofoten is just that, solitary and peaceful, with beautiful and gentle lakes and mountains. How should you play in Lofoten? I recommend renting a car🚖 to have the most fun touring the entire island!
📸 About the attractions
❶ Hamnoy
Google Maps location 'Fotospot Hamnoy', the cover of Lonely Planet, better wide-angle shooting effect on the east side of the bridge.
❷ Olenilsoya kystfort
Location 'Roastad Retro Rorbuer', a few red houses, walk up the mountain trail next to the houses for a better view, especially when the lights of the fishing village are on in the evening.
❸ Å town
The end of the Lofoten Islands, the town with the shortest name in the world, with distant mountains looming, giving a sense of extremity.
❹ Skagsanden beach
The desolate beach along the E10 highway.
❺ Yellow House
Location 'Anita’s Sjomat', the popular yellow house is right next to it, nothing special about the house itself, but the surrounding scenery is not bad, worth a walk.
❻ XHenningsvaer Stadium
The football field is at the end of Henningsvaer, with nice scenery along the way, a romantic journey.
🚘 Route suggestion: Lofoten + Senja Island + Tromsø
🌈 Travel Tips
It is suggested to visit these places together, each with its own charm, no need to worry about aesthetic fatigue😻
Tromsø needs no introduction, stroll through the colorful streets of houses🏠, the design-savvy Arctic Cathedral, take the cable car🚠 to overlook the fjord, both the live view and the photo angles are good
Senja Island, which is on the way from Tromsø to Lofoten, is a perfect stopover. The mountains🏞 on Senja are higher, the terrain is more varied, and there are more viewing platforms, offering a more visually impactful experience
Winter's ultimate scenery not to be missed: Norway's Lofoten Islands.
As a child born in the south, the world of ice and snow has always been a place I longed for, but I also maintain a sense of awe and distance from it, knowing full well that I cannot withstand extremely low temperatures. That's why I have visited so many countries, with destinations mostly in the southern parts of the earth or in Europe that are not too cold. However, when I thought about the rare opportunity to come to the Netherlands, it seemed a shame not to visit Norway, so I decided not to give up this opportunity that was right in front of me.
🚶🏻♂️Departing after New Year's Day, Norway is currently experiencing polar night, with less than five hours of daylight. If it snows or rains, it may be gloomy all day long. Be mentally prepared, because after 3 pm, the whole earth falls into darkness. Also, this period is not the peak tourist season on the island, and many indigenous people will leave. Therefore, once it gets dark, you may not see many people even if you drive for a long time.
🚗When coming to the Lofoten Islands, be sure to rent a car for self-driving. Especially in this season, there is almost no public transportation, and driving is the most convenient option. Also, be sure to choose a four-wheel drive car, equipped with snow tires, and get full insurance, which is related to life safety. I rented a car at Evenes airport, which is relatively close to the Lofoten Islands. I also have friends who rented a car from Tromsø and drove all the way, which can be more tiring.
📍My trip in Lofoten lasts for five nights and six days, which is relatively tight. I will stay in three popular destinations on the islands: Andøya, Henningsvær, and Reine, and then explore from these three points. This way, the driving distance each day won't be too long, and I can experience the local customs and culture to the fullest. Among the three places, my favorite is still Henningsvær, which has a iconic football field at the end of the world, snow-capped mountains, and a larger city half an hour's drive away where I can buy materials and find enough restaurants.
🦪During the winter season, many restaurants in Rovaniemi are closed due to the off-season for travel. In addition, the cost of traveling in northern Europe is already higher than in the south, and even ordinary restaurants have an average cost of around 200-300 RMB per person. Therefore, buying relatively cheap raw materials in supermarkets and cooking for oneself is a more worry-free and cost-effective way.
📸As long as it's a good day, the Isle of Rafton is really photogenic, with an extreme purity and coolness that will make you unable to stop your camera. Many times, you can take very beautiful photos with just your phone. My camera model is Canon R5, and I basically used the 24-105 lens throughout the journey.
Next winter, looking forward to the opportunity to say goodbye to the Nordic again!
Lofoten Islands, Norway
The Lofoten Islands are a dream destination for many travellers from all over the world. This archipelago offers one of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe. It owes its name "Lofoten" to its form, that of the footprint of a lynx. Get into the wild this year, leave the busy cities, treat yourself to limitless horizons. The Lofoten Islands are the promise of real contact with nature, with the elements. Located just 200 km from the Arctic Circle, the Lofoten Islands will surprise you.
You will discover fine white sand beaches, a crystal blue sea, fishing villages out of a children's story, unforgettable landscapes. The easiest way is to book your flights to Oslo and take a domestic flight to Bodø. From Bodø, take the ferry to Svolvær where most of the expeditions to the Lofoten Islands leave. You can also reach Bodø by train from Oslo or Tromsø.
Book your flights to Oslo, your cheapest accommodation in Oslo, Svolvær or Reine as well as your best activities and tours in Norway.

I am ending my small Lofoten series with a classic one. This place is called Reine and it’s also world famous for its beauty. The funny thing: these pictures are literally captured by just stopping on the road. Hope you liked my Lofoten series and the impressions from there. Do you have questions about the trip? Hit me up! I can totally recommend visiting this amazing place. Next up: Iceland!

Who’s up for a road trip on the Lofoten islands during midnight sun? What’s for sure, you can’t concentrate on the road while driving, I can tell you! Best place for a road trip tho :)

So this is probably the craziest and most beautiful football stadium on earth. This place is called Henningsvær and has reached global attention for its beauty! Henningsvær is a small fishing village with about 500 inhabitants. The European football organisation, UEFA, filmed on and around the field for their "We Play Strong" video. Best place to film a video like that in my opinion :)

Could you imagine a better camp spot for one night? I honestly prefer those nights in the tent 1000x more to luxury hotels. Why? I just love to be outside and see the stars at night. Especially when camping on the beach. Listening to the waves and just sit back and enjoy is the best thing I can imagine :) Would you spend a night here too?

This first picture here is probably my favorite picture I have ever taken! Why is that? It always reminds me of going on a hike during midnight with an awesome crew. This day was one of the best days in my life as it was just perfect. We made a campfire on the beach, hiked on the mountain during midnight, spent whole 4 hours up there watching the sunset/sunrise and we had so much fun and awesome talks. Cant wait to be back some day!

Which cabin would you choose? Being in quarantine right now in Europe, I can imagine to rent one of those cute little cabins to spend it there. When you travel to Norway you will immediately recognize that those red cabins are literally everywhere. So which one is your favorite? 😍

Most people’s job is to be a fisherman on those islands. When you visit those cute little fisher towns you feel like being home somehow. I really liked walking through these towns and just see how the people live there every day. When you visit those towns during the night in midnight sun time you have the whole place for yourself as everyone is sleeping. Such a calm scene :)

What a beautiful beach - again. But it’s not Thailand my friends this time. In the next posts I will show you some impressions of my summer adventures last year on the Lofoten islands in Norway, which is the most northernmost point I’ve ever been. Those islands in the arctic circle, which means you can get really bad weather within minutes. In summer it looks like the Caribbean sometimes. Couldn’t believe my eyes when I first saw this 😍 Have you ever been to Norway?

Lofoten Islands - a travel bucket list destination
Amazing hidden gem in Norway during the winter, where the rugged landscape formed from millions of years of erosion will make your heart skip heartbeats.
When dust falls, the dark skies envelope the night. This is when the aurora borealis come out to play. Awesome feast for the eyes and once in a lifetime opportunity await you when you look to the skies!

The Day and Night of Lofoten
Rated by 'Lonely Planet' as the most beautiful archipelago in the world, the beauty of Lofoten is an exclamation mark❗️ Moreover, winter and summer offer completely different experiences. Winter in Northern Norway spans 8 months, with the remaining 4 months divided among spring, summer, and autumn. When most of the Northern Hemisphere has entered spring, Lofoten is still covered in snow. Here's what you need to know about visiting Lofoten:
⭕️ Public transportation in Norway is inconvenient, especially in Northern Norway. Traveling between Tromso and Lofoten without a car is a big challenge. The longest journey involves taking a bus, then a plane to Bodo, followed by a speedboat, and finally, a cruise on either Hurtigruten or Havila (a separate article will compare the two). I think taking a cruise is a must to better appreciate the fjord scenery. However, it's actually enough to take a 1-2 day port to port cruise, and then explore the islands at your own pace.
⭕️ The Northern Lights season in Northern Norway is from October to early April each year. It is said that the weather in October/November or March is relatively stable and not so cold. I visited in March, and the weather was not very stable 🤣🤣.
⭕️ The weather on the Lofoten Islands in winter is unpredictable; it can be sunny one moment and overcast the next, followed by heavy snowfall within 10 minutes. The day before we arrived, the snow on the island had almost melted, but overnight, nature had re-coated it with a fresh layer of snow. So whether you're there to see the snow or the Northern Lights, don't be misled by the weather forecast. It might say it's cloudy at night, but the wind could blow the clouds away, although this doesn't apply to rain.
⭕️ Stay on the island for at least 4-5 days, as the weather is changeable, and you don't want to miss the Northern Lights or the snowscapes due to weather conditions.
⭕️ If you're staying in Solvaer, don't miss the Thon Hotels, which has two locations, one 5🌟 and the other 4🌟. Their breakfasts at the two Solvaer locations are truly comprehensive and have won the award for the best breakfast in Europe. See picture 16 for details.
⭕️ In March, temperatures in Northern Norway range from -5 to -10 degrees Celsius. Thanks to the warm Gulf Stream, it's much warmer than the rest of the Nordic countries at the same latitude.
⭕️ Have ice grips and reflective vests ready for safety at night.
Norway's E10 Road—Living in a Painting
The E10 Road, also known as King Olav's Way, is one of Norway's 18 National Scenic Routes. It is the main artery that crosses the Lofoten archipelago from east to west. Driving along the E10 Road through Lofoten towards the south, you will be greeted by mountains, lakes, fjords, and fishing cabins... a collection of breathtaking views.
European roads starting with 'E' signify transnational European highways. This E10 Road is a transnational highway between northern Norway and Sweden. It starts at Å, the southernmost point of the Lofoten Islands, traverses the archipelago, passes through Svolvær heading north to Narvik, then through Kiruna, the Swedish town known for the Northern Lights, and finally ends at Luleå on the Baltic Sea coast.
The heart-stirring signals of Norwegian nature
Spring, the global tour of the aurora is about to conclude at the end of the aurora season, which is also the time when the aurora becomes more active. It's time to head to Norway to witness this grand finale!
Take the Northern Lights Train from Narvik, the world's northernmost ice-free port, for a 3-hour journey through the fjords of northern Norway. Encounter an ancient village perched at an altitude of 374 meters during a brief stop at the station. 🔥 Light a bonfire, taste some pastries, and meet the dazzling aurora that fills the entire night sky, bringing the beauty from the documentary played on the train right before your eyes.
Located below the 'Aurora Oval', the Lofoten Islands are one of the world's best places to watch the aurora. People board warm and comfortable boats into the fjords, waiting for the aurora to descend, or follow a guide to the sparsely populated wilderness around. In these pristine areas with less artificial light, capture the magnificent performance of the aurora in the night sky.

Sakrisoy Village, a charming fishing village in the Lofoten Islands
The Lofoten Islands are scattered in the turbulent Norwegian Sea, with towering mountains, deep fjords, and endless, tumultuous beaches. Located north of the Arctic Circle, the Lofoten Islands, where stars in winter pass through the long billions of light years to meet the earth, brush past in the autumn night, turning into a green aurora. It's so beautiful that it takes your breath away, according to Lonely Planet!
Midnight Sun and Viking Lore
The Lofoten Islands, situated within the Arctic Circle in Norway, are a destination where nature's extremes and Viking history converge to create an unparalleled adventure. My journey to these ruggedly beautiful islands during the summer months allowed me to experience the phenomenon of the midnight sun, where the day extends into night with the sun never fully setting, casting an ethereal glow over the landscapes.
Exploring the Lofoten Islands revealed a world of majestic mountains rising dramatically from the sea, pristine beaches with crystal-clear waters, and traditional fishing villages where time seems to stand still. The unique combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage makes Lofoten a mesmerizing place to visit.
For those planning to visit the Lofoten Islands, it's essential to be prepared for changeable weather, even in summer. Layers are key, as are waterproof clothing and sturdy hiking boots. Renting a car provides the flexibility to explore the islands at your own pace, though many visitors also choose to cycle or even hitchhike, embracing the islands' friendly and welcoming spirit.
The Lofoten Islands offer a unique blend of natural wonders, historical depth, and adventure. It's a place where the sun never sets on your exploration, where every view is a postcard, and the legacy of the Vikings adds a thrilling edge to your journey.

A different Norway
The Lofoten Islands, located in Nordland County, Norway, is a group of islands in the north of Norway, all within the Arctic Circle. The climate is harsh, the scenery is picturesque, and the population is sparse, which also creates this isolated beauty.

One of the most beautiful place that I visit, lofoten, Norway
The beauty of the world belongs to everyone, let's share the beautiful scenery from all over the world!
2022 More than Travel · 2022 is really a year worth commemorating for myself, because I have traveled to more than 10 countries one after another, and all the experiences and memories are unforgettable.
On the journey, everything is a treasure worth cherishing. Not just the moments on the road.
Beautiful scenery is also a tribute to the younger self of a second ago.

Breathtaking Lofoten Islands
Location: Lofoten Islands, Norway
Headed to Norway? Make sure you take a trip to the Lofoten Islands. Visit in the summer and you might get a chance to experience the midnight sun (i.e. when the sun doesn’t set)! Highly recommend the islands for those who love the outdoors and hikes! You’ll be spoiled for choice with the amount of hikes available, ranging from beginner to advanced hikes. So pack along your hiking boots and gear! Here’s where you’ll be able to spot the famous red fisherman cabins and also stay in one! Many have been converted into Airbnbs and home stays. Don’t miss this unique experience!
This was my favourite trip of 2019. Seeing the islands of Lofoten from above is incredible. Some pf the most beautiful landscapes I've seen this year.
It has long been known that Norwegian potatoes are super delicious, because there is a very pure fragrance; even simple potatoes are very delicious. Simply put some salt and pepper, the pure taste is addictive and fascinating. Later, after arriving at the Lofoten Islands in northern Norway, after eating a huge roast potato that was completely hopeless, it became a potato madman. The restaurant that sells potatoes, I went three times in a row! !
There is a Bacalao in the docked area of Svolvaer town. There are four kinds of baked potatoes, with Arctic shrimp, bacon, ham, and vegan.
Baked Potato with shrimp. This is definitely worth the money, the matching Arctic shrimp not only go to the shell to go to the line, but also to the silt out! ! Those who have eaten Arctic Shrimp must know that they are tender and sweet, but they are not super big but super super delicious. This potato with baked potatoes is huge, about the size of the two fists of an adult. But ~ although big, it is very soft and delicate. It doesn't matter if you taste it, you are addicted! That fragrance, the potato aroma that still swallows in the mouth, so delicious! ! The cream is not greasy, everything is just right.
Bacon Bacon in the Bacon section is not as thin as it is generally eaten; the bacon here is very thick and lean. The palate is more like a bitter pork! Potatoes and pork, two sinful foods add together, a perfect combination of perfect satisfaction! !
