Five facts about San Marco Piazza in Venice
below are some interesting facts I learned about this beautiful square (San Marco) in Venice:
1. It’s the lowest point in Venice (around 90 cm above sea level) which makes it prone to flooding and is the first area to get flooded in a situation of an Acqua Alta.
2. The Piazza San Marco is the only square in Venice which is called a Piazza.
3. Napoleon named it “the world’s most beautiful drawing room”.
4. There are 3 flagpoles on the front of the basilica that refer to the 3 kingdoms Venice conquered: Crete, Cyprus and the Peloponnese.
5. The square was first paved in the 12th century, but was renovated in 1723 in to a more geometric design.
