Descending the mountain is generally faster, but it's quite tiring on the legs; my legs were shaking so much that I couldn't focus my phone camera for photos. We chose to hike up the mountain, but there is also another route where you can take a sightseeing car up to Dongshan, which costs 50 yuan. The two routes are completely different.
