Spain Picos de Europa – Ruta del Cares, Caín to Poncebos Gorge Cliff PathS
#itinerarycheck Twelve km, one way, four hours, zero shade. The Ruta del Cares is the most over-photographed trail in northern Spain and still worth it. We started from Caín (León side) at 8 am — Caín start is gentler (initial downhill), Poncebos start hits 2 km uphill first. The path is blasted into the gorge wall: tunnels, a hanging bridge, constant Cares river 200 m below, vertical limestone on both sides.
Logistics: no public transport links the two ends conveniently, so either shuttle a car (we left one at Poncebos, taxi'd to Caín ~25 EUR) or walk back (8h total). No water sources en route — carry 2 L in summer, plus windbreaker; the gorge funnels gusts. Free trail, no permit. Toilets only at village ends.
What nobody tells you: the middle 6 km is flat and hypnotic, your legs forget they're walking, then the final approach to Poncebos drops in switchbacks and your knees remember. Mistake we made: starting at 10:30 in August — hit the return switchbacks at 2 pm, 34°C, no shade, hallucinating the parking. Best light is pre-10 am when the gorge is in shadow and the river glows green.
Itinerary check: sleep in Potes or Cangas de Onís, drive to Caín, hike to Poncebos, taxi or pre-positioned car back. Add Fuente Dé cable car next day if you want altitude contrast. Cares alone is a half-day, not a full Picos experience — pair it with a refuge night above Treviso or Sotres.

Potes, the best secret 💖🤞🏽
Ready for mountain-town vibes? ⛰️🌿 Potes is one of the prettiest little villages in northern Spain — stone bridges, rivers running through the center, green mountains everywhere, and that cozy atmosphere that makes you want to stay longer than planned. Perfect stop if you love nature, hiking, and peaceful places.
Top Spots to Visit:
🏘️ Potes Old Town: Walk through the narrow stone streets, cross the little bridges, and enjoy the traditional mountain architecture.
⛰️ Picos de Europa: The huge highlight of the area. Incredible landscapes, hiking routes, viewpoints, and fresh mountain air everywhere.
🌉 River Walks: The rivers crossing through Potes make the whole village feel super relaxing, especially in the evening.
Practical Tip:
If you visit in colder months, bring warm clothes. Mountain weather changes fast and nights can get chilly even when the day is sunny.
Wrap-Up Tips:
🍲 Food: Try cocido lebaniego and local cheeses — northern Spain comfort food goes hard here.
🚗 Getting Around: Best explored by car if you want to discover nearby viewpoints and mountain routes.
🌿 Atmosphere: Quiet, authentic, and perfect for disconnecting from busy city life.

Mountain Vibes and Old Stone Streets in Potes
#summervacay Potes is one of those towns that makes you feel like you just walked into a medieval postcard. It's tucked right in the middle of mountains, with rivers running through it and stone bridges connecting everything in the chillest way. The streets are all cobbled and twisty, lined with old houses, cute little balconies, and plenty of spots to grab something tasty.
The vibe is super relaxed, locals chatting in the squares, hikers passing through with muddy boots, and cafés that are perfect for a slow drink while you watch the world go by. You’re also pretty close to the Picos de Europa trails, so it’s a great base if you’re planning to explore the mountains.
Oh, and if you’re into food, try the cocido lebaniego, hearty and delicious, especially after a long walk. It’s not a big town, but it’s packed with charm and surrounded by jaw dropping scenery. Just bring comfy shoes and take your time. Potes moves at a slower, sweeter pace.

Cozy Streets and Mountain Feels in Potes
#summervacay Potes is one of those towns that just makes you wanna wander aimlessly and stop for snacks every five minutes. It’s tucked right between mountains, so you’ve got epic views in every direction, plus cute old streets with stone bridges, wooden balconies, and chill little plazas. The vibe is super relaxed and kind of magical, especially with the river running through it.
You can easily spend a whole day just walking around, popping into shops, and trying local stuff like queso picón or orujo (which is super strong but kind of fun to taste). The mix of old buildings and nature is perfect, like one minute you’re sipping coffee in a cobbled alley, the next you’re staring up at massive green peaks.
It’s also a great base if you’re heading into Picos de Europa, but even on its own, Potes has that warm, small-town charm that just feels good. Nothing fancy, just super cozy and peaceful. Total must-stop when exploring Cantabria.

Cozy Streets and Mountain Views in Potes
#summervacay Potes totally stole our hearts. It’s this super cute mountain town tucked into the heart of Cantabria, surrounded by the epic peaks of the Picos de Europa. The whole place has this chill, old-school vibe, stone bridges, cobbled streets, and cozy cafés on every corner. We just wandered around, ate way too many pastries, and soaked in the views.
The best part? No matter where you look, there are mountains in the background. It’s like the town is hugging the landscape. There’s also a river running right through it which makes everything feel extra peaceful.
If you're into food, Potes has you covered, tons of little restaurants serving up hearty mountain dishes. And if you’re feeling adventurous, there are hikes and nature trails super close by. But honestly, it’s also perfect for doing absolutely nothing. Just sit at a café, sip a drink, and watch the world go by.
Potes is the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and stay longer. Loved it.

Potes and the Santa Catalina Viewpoint: A Breathtaking Experience in the Picos de Europa 🏞️🌄
Potes is a beautiful village located in the heart of the Picos de Europa, surrounded by the majestic mountains and lush greenery of the region. Its narrow streets, old stone houses, and picturesque atmosphere make it the perfect base for exploring this stunning part of Spain. 🏡🌳
One of the highlights of my visit was the Santa Catalina viewpoint. From there, the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys were absolutely incredible. The Picos de Europa truly live up to their reputation as one of Spain’s most beautiful natural areas, with towering peaks and dramatic landscapes that take your breath away. 🏔️
If you’re in the area, don’t miss the chance to visit Potes and enjoy the Santa Catalina viewpoint. It’s a peaceful, awe-inspiring experience that will leave you with unforgettable memories. 🌟🇪🇦
