#bucketlistdestinations Hkakabo Rzi (now Kha Maung Mu) is the highest peak in Southeast Asia, and getting to its foothills in Kachin State is an expedition in itself. Permits are a nightmare—you need a special Kachin State permit and a military escort, arranged through a registered agency in Yangon (costing upwards of $500 for the paperwork and escort). From Putao, the trek into the mossy Himalayan foothills takes 5 days through some of the most pristine temperate forests on earth. The air here is thin and smells of wet stone and ancient rhododendrons. The forest floor is a deep, spongy mattress of moss that covers everything—tree trunks as wide as cars, fallen logs, and the roots of giant magnolias. I made the critical error of trying to use a GPS app; there is no signal. My guide, a Kachin former hunter named Dashi, laughed and pointed to the moss. “The moss always grows thicker on the side away from the wind,” he explained. “It is your compass.” One evening, our camp was engulfed in a freezing cloud. Dashi pulled out a small, hand-carved bamboo pipe and smoked local herbs, then offered it to me. It wasn’t for recreation; it was to clear the lungs of the damp. That night, listening to the silence of the Himalayan forest, I realized that this place doesn’t just test your endurance; it demands your humility. The moss here isn’t just plant life; it’s the forest’s memory. #favouriteitinerary Putao is located in Myanmar’s most Northern state called Kachin State. This place is known for being cold and having snowy mountains during winter. We didn’t do before it was too cold so it wasn’t as cold. The hotel was very beautifully decorated with direct access to Nam Lang River where we could sit by the shore and watch the beautiful mountains. My mother wanted to try on a Kachin Traditional Clothing and the hotel was nice enough to advise us on the matter! I added a photo of her looking happy and taking photos. I definitely recommend visiting during the winter if you wanna look at snowy mountains on a budget!

On the banks of Yingdaoji Lake, there is a small village primary school, located in the jungle. The students here are full of curiosity about the outside world. They are simple and beautiful, and their faces are always filled with moving smiles. Into the pure world away from the hustle and bustle of the city, enjoying a quiet and bleak slow time, it is very refreshing.
