We stayed at the only guesthouse in Zhire Monastery. On the day we checked in, the generator broke down, so there was no electricity, and we had to use headlamps for lighting. Starting from Chamdo city, a 12-kilometer journey along National Highway 214 will take you to the Karuo Site. Along the way, the scenery changes constantly, transitioning from urban architecture to pastoral landscapes, finally revealing the seemingly ordinary yet historically significant land near Karuo Village. Discovered in 1977 and listed as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit in 1996, the Karuo Site is one of the three major prehistoric cultural sites in Tibet. "Karuo" means "castle" in Tibetan, and legend has it that a castle once stood here to defend against enemies; though the castle is now destroyed, the name has survived. Located at an altitude of 3600-3800 meters, the site dates back 5500-4400 years, with cultural layers 100-160 centimeters thick, making it one of the best-preserved prehistoric sites in Tibet. Upon entering the site, the first thing you see is a protected area connected by a wooden walkway. Walking along the walkway, the foundations of houses from 5,000 years ago are clearly visible. There are wooden structures with mud walls, as well as semi-subterranean structures with cobblestone walls. Stone hearths are located in the center of the houses, and postholes are distributed throughout the interior and around the perimeter. Stone-paved roads, stone-walled buildings, and cellars have also been discovered at the site, showcasing the living scenes and residential layout of the people at that time. A large number of artifacts have been unearthed at the site. Although most of the originals are now in museums, the exhibits displayed alongside the site still allow one to imagine the splendor of that era. Among them are stone production tools, such as shovels, hoes, and choppers, as well as bone tools such as bone drills and needles, and pottery with various patterns. The most famous is the double-bodied pottery jar, which is the prototype for the prized possession of the Changdu City Museum. In addition, there are ornaments such as rings, beads, and bracelets made of jade, stone, and bone, reflecting the aesthetic concepts of the time. Qiangbalin Monastery: The Millennium Echo of Eastern Tibetan Zen Forest In Chamdo, Tibet, there is an ancient Gelugpa monastery of Tibetan Buddhism—Qiangbalin Monastery, shining like a brilliant pearl, nestled on Mount Mala at the confluence of the Angqu and Zhaqu rivers. In the early morning, we set off from downtown Chamdo and reached Qiangbalin Monastery in less than 15 minutes by taxi. The sunlight poured over the golden roof, sparkling brightly, the copper bells under the eaves jingled gently in the breeze, and the scent of pine branches filled the air, instantly bringing a sense of tranquility and sanctity. Qiangbalin Monastery was overseen by Xirao Sangbu, a disciple of the founder Tsongkhapa, in the 1530s, and it is the largest monastery in eastern Tibet. The monastery’s name comes from the future Buddha Qiangba Buddha, also known as Maitreya Buddha, who is the main deity worshiped there. After visiting the monastery, we headed to a small alley beside Qiangbalin Monastery to find some food. There is a small shop called Laze Store, easy to miss if you’re not paying attention. The shop owner warmly greeted us, and we ordered cold noodles and celery beef dumplings. Five minutes later, a bowl of cold noodles topped with red chili oil and bean sprouts was served. The unique aroma of Tibetan chili mixed with the numbing flavor of Sichuan pepper made it irresistibly addictive. The dumplings had thin skins and generous fillings, with delicious broth. Qiangbalin Monastery is not only a religious sanctuary but also a window into the culture of eastern Tibet. Here, time seems to slow down, allowing one to calm the mind and feel the power of faith and the weight of history. There were very few large trucks on the road, and the cars were all speeding along. The so-called many curves were mostly natural turns following the river's path. Hairpin turns were concentrated in the climb out of the canyon before reaching Jinling Township. There were rockfalls, but in such canyon terrain, this is normal, and the road maintenance crews were prompt with repairs and clearing, keeping risks manageable. Overall, the drive was very comfortable. For accommodation, I strongly advise avoiding Bianba County. The main road in the county town has no parking spaces at all, and even the sidewalks are intermittent. Walking around, there was a pervasive smell of sewage. I booked a hotel that same day with limited options. Just my personal opinion—try to avoid it if possible. Even staying at a village homestay would be more spacious and pleasant.
