In 2025, its capital Valletta won both the best European city for travel and the best city in the world for travel awards. The exterior of St. John’s Co-Cathedral is modest, but inside it dazzles with gold and splendor—the massive Caravaggio painting The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist hangs here. The Upper Barrakka Gardens host a noon cannon salute and offer the best view of the Three Cities across the harbor. Wander down Old Mint Street, where the sloping roads and colorful balconies create Malta’s most iconic street scene. 🏰 Mdina · the silent city Older than Valletta, it was Malta’s former capital. Almost no cars enter the city, and the narrow medieval stone streets are so quiet you can hear your footsteps. At dusk, the honey-colored walls glow amber in the sunset, as if time has paused. 💙 The three blues: Malta’s palette Malta has the “three blues”—the Blue Grotto, the Blue Lagoon, and the Blue Window. The Blue Grotto is on the southern coast of the main island; take a small boat into the sea caves where sunlight refracts cobalt blue. The Blue Lagoon on Comino Island has crystal-clear water so blue it seems unreal. Malta is such a beautiful country! It is just two small islands Malta and Gozo. Valletta the capital city is hundreds of years old and officially became the capital in 1571, so it is kinda old! The rocky islands are located south of Sicily and east of Tunisia in the Mediterranean Sea. One of the most famous and gorgeous hikes is on the southern tip of Malta. It starts just outside of the quaint town of Zurrieq. It begins by hiking into and through Wied Babu (Gorge) and along the southern coast to the Blue Grotto (named because of the massive cathedral like caves and the seas color), then continue past Wied Zurrieq and along the jagged limestone cliffs to Torri tal Hamrija (an old lighthouse). The last section of the trail follows above and beside the sea until Ghar Lapsi and the large parking lot for the TarRita restaurant.
