Rennes travel guide and discussion

Rising out of a vast bay where Normandy meets Brittany, Mont Saint-Michel is a tidal island commune crowned by a Benedictine abbey dedicated to the Archangel Michael. Originally founded in the 8th century by Bishop Aubert of Avranches following reported celestial visions, the rock evolved into a major medieval pilgrimage destination and an impregnable military stronghold that repelled multiple English assaults during the Hundred Years' War. At high tide, the surging waters cut off the granite outcrop from the mainland, creating a floating citadel above wide mudflats. The Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel (Abbaye du Mont-Saint-Michel): The structural apex of the island, balancing three architectural tiers on top of a granite pyramid. Entering requires climbing through the Grand Degré staircase into the Romanesque abbey church. The top open terrace, the West Platform, offers sweeping views across the salt marshes and the sweeping curves of the Couesnon River. La Merveille (The Marvel): The 13th-century Gothic section flanking the northern face of the abbey. The crown jewel is the Cloister, featuring a double row of staggered granite columns designed to frame sky and ocean views, adjacent to the atmospheric monks' Refectory and the vaulted Knights’ Hall (Salle des Chevaliers). The Ramparts Walk (Les Remparts): Starting behind the king's gate, this elevated stone parapet winds along the fortified southern and eastern defensive walls. Walking the battlements bypasses the crowded central street below and provides clear vantage points of watchtowers such as Tour Gabriel and Tour du Nord looking over the tidal flats. Grande Rue: The single, narrow cobbled lane ascending through the medieval village from the main gates to the abbey foot. It is packed with 15th- and 16th-century half-timbered merchant buildings, souvenir shops, and heritage eateries, including the famous Auberge La Mère Poulard, renowned for its open-hearth wood-fired soufflé omelets made since 1888. Tidal Bay Crossing (Traversée de la Baie): Walking barefoot across the exposed seabed at low tide. Led strictly by certified local nature guides, treks depart from the Bec d'Andaine or Saint-Léonard to navigate soft mudflats, cross shallow river channels, and safely skirt the treacherous pockets of moving quicksand (sables mouvants). Tidal Dynamics and Supertides (Crucial Timing): The bay of Mont Saint-Michel experiences the greatest tidal range in continental Europe, rising up to 14–15 meters between high and low water. During peak spring tides (tidal coefficient of 100 or higher), the water completely submerges the surrounding sand and covers the access esplanade, turning the mount into a true island for roughly 1 to 2 hours. Check the official Marees (Tide Tables) before traveling. Arrive at least 2 hours before the calculated high tide to witness the water rushing in across the flats "at the speed of a galloping horse." Getting to the Mount (Passeur Shuttle vs. Footbridge): All private vehicles must park at the mainland parking hub (P1–P13) situated 2.5 kilometers south of the rock. From the transport hub, free electric shuttle buses called Le Passeur run continuously, dropping passengers off roughly 400 meters from the island gates. Alternatively, walking across the curving pedestrian footbridge takes roughly 40 to 50 minutes, offering unimpeded wide-angle views as the abbey looms closer. Abbey Entry & Reservation Rules: The village streets and defensive walls are open 24/7 with zero admission cost. Entering the abbey itself requires a paid entry ticket with a timed-entry reservation. Book online in advance during spring and summer to avoid lengthy ticket lines at the upper portal. Getting Here from Paris: Take the high-speed TGV train from Paris Montparnasse to Rennes (approx. 1 hour 30 minutes). From Rennes railway station, direct regional express buses run straight to the Mont Saint-Michel visitor hub (approx. 1 hour 10 minutes). Alternatively, regional trains run seasonally from Paris Montparnasse to Pontorson, followed by a direct 15-minute connecting shuttle. Footwear and Physical Demands: The interior of the mount contains over 350 stone steps and steep, uneven cobbled inclines; it is not suited for wheeled luggage or standard strollers. Wear supportive walking shoes with non-slip soles. If participating in a guided bay mudflat walk, do not wear sneakers; walk barefoot in neoprene booties or water shoes, and carry a small towel to rinse off clay and silt at mainland footwash stations. Seasonality and Daily Rhythm: Day-Tripper Waves: The village is heavily congested between 10:30 AM and 04:30 PM. Stay overnight in the village or visit in the late evening after 06:00 PM, when daytime tour buses depart and the village alleys are lit by warm lanterns. Autumn & Winter: Atmospheric and quiet with moody sea mists, though strong Atlantic gales and cold winds require heavy thermal outerwear. #MontSaintMichel #VisitNormandy #FranceTravel #ExploreFrance #MedievalCitadel #GothicArchitecture #TidalIsland #UNESCOWorldHeritage #TripMoments #travel2026#travel#myitinerary

Mont-Saint-Michel in France. I've been to France a few times, but I had given up on going here because it seemed a bit hard to get to... But I really wanted to see it with my own eyes, so I finally made the trip! The scenery was even more mystical than in the photos, and I truly understood why it’s called a "must-visit World Heritage Site." In this post, I'll share my actual experience, including how to get there and the best way to explore! 💡 There are guided tours from Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel, but I wanted to see the sunset and sunrise, so I went on my own and stayed overnight at a hotel. [How to Get There] ① Take a train from Paris Montparnasse Station to Rennes Station (Approx. 1.5 hours) (Trains like TGV inOUI and OUIGO are available.) Take a bus from Rennes Station to Le Mont Saint-Michel Station (Approx. 1.5 hours) (Note: This is a KEOLIS bus, and there are only 3 departures a day, so be careful!) 💡 I highly recommend booking both your train and bus tickets in advance once your dates and times are set.) ② I had originally booked the route mentioned above, but plot twist: my train was delayed, and I completely missed my bus! 💦 So, I had to pivot and figure out a new route on the fly. Here’s how I did it: Take a train from Rennes Station to Pontorson Station (Approx. 1 hour) Take a bus from Pontorson Station to Mont-Saint-Michel (Approx. 30 minutes) (This bus had several stops, including right in front of my hotel and at the entrance to the Mont-Saint-Michel island!) Despite the chaos, I somehow made it to the hotel I had booked, dropped off my bags, and headed straight to Mont-Saint-Michel! [Mont-Saint-Michel] Watching Mont-Saint-Michel slowly come into view. It looked exactly like a castle floating on the sea, and I couldn't help but feel emotional: "I'm actually here...!" From the parking lot/bus terminal, you can take a free shuttle or walk to the island. Walking takes about 40 minutes, but strolling at a relaxed pace while taking in the breathtaking views felt absolutely amazing. [How to Explore] First, start with the main street. The cobblestone path is lined with souvenir shops and restaurants, making you feel like you've stepped back in time into a medieval town. Next, head up to the Abbey. The stunning cloisters and chapels offer panoramic views of the surroundings, making it a truly special place where you can soak in the history and tranquility. After exploring, I grabbed a bite at a restaurant and walked back along the outer wall, known as the "View Course." The sunset and Mont-Saint-Michel were absolutely gorgeous. Where I Ate 🍽️ Restaurant Du Guesclin 📍 3025 Grande Rue, 50170 Le Mont-Saint-Michel, France I ordered a set menu! And, of course, I had to try their famous omelet just in case. 🥚 I went back to the hotel for a bit and then walked out again to see Mont-Saint-Michel after sunset. It wasn't particularly lit up, though. Where I Stayed 🏨 Hôtel Mercure Mont-Saint-Michel 📍 Rte du Mont Saint-Michel Bp 8, 50170 Le Mont-Saint-Michel, France The best part was how close it was to the shuttle bus stop. Plus, the room had AC, so I could cool off! ✨ The room itself was really clean, too! ✨ The next morning, I walked over right in time for the 6:06 AM sunrise. (Keep in mind, the shuttle buses aren't running that early!) There were hardly any people, and I got to witness the magical sight of the morning glow and Mont-Saint-Michel. Afterward, I waited for high tide to see Mont-Saint-Michel looking like it was truly floating on the water, admired its reflection, and even checked out the "Méandres," known as the "winding waterways." 🥾 Méandres 📍 JG94+PQ, Pontorson, France The sea and sky completely change their vibe depending on the time of day, making it an absolute paradise for photography lovers. It’s bound to be an unforgettable memory! ☺️ 💡 When I booked the KEOLIS bus, they emailed me an admission discount coupon for the Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey! So, I think it's definitely a good idea to book your bus tickets before making your Abbey reservation!

Some plants do not wait for you to discover them quietly. From a distance, the first thing that catches the eye is an unexpected sea of red — vivid, luminous, almost unreal against the surrounding greens. Approaching closer, the mystery reveals itself: Berberis (barberry), its foliage glowing like scattered embers beneath the open sky. In the serene grounds of Jardin botanique de Haute‑Bretagne, this burst of crimson feels almost theatrical. Yet nature wears it effortlessly. Layer upon layer of ruby leaves shimmer in changing light, shifting between scarlet, burgundy, and deep wine tones depending on where the sun chooses to land. There is something quietly captivating about the contrast — delicate branches carrying such unapologetic color, standing among calmer shades of woodland green and garden earth. It feels less like a flower display and more like a painter suddenly choosing bold pigment after pages of softer watercolor. Moments like this remind you that botanical gardens are not only about rare species or scientific collections. Sometimes, they are simply about surprise — turning an ordinary walk into an encounter with color so vivid you stop without meaning to. 📍 Location: Upper Brittany Botanical Garden, France 🚗 How to get there: Accessible by car from Rennes; ideal as a countryside day trip 🕰️ Best time: Spring through autumn for rich foliage colors and seasonal garden displays 💡 Travel tip: Wander slowly and look beyond the flowers — some of the garden’s most striking beauty lives in leaves, textures, and unexpected bursts of foliage color. Sometimes, beauty does not bloom. Sometimes, it arrives in leaves painted the color of fire.

To be precise, I traveled from Disneyland Paris to Mont Saint-Michel! Woke up at 3 AM! Haha First, I looked for a locker to store my suitcase before arriving at Montparnasse Station. I ended up leaving it at the front desk of the nearby Hotel ibis! Lockers can sometimes have size limitations, so leaving your luggage at a hotel is highly recommended! Then, I dashed to Montparnasse Station. I boarded the train I had booked online and headed to Rennes Station. At Rennes Station, I got a bit lost finding the bus stop, but I managed to arrive safely. I took the bus to Mont Saint-Michel. It was clean and comfortable! Upon arrival, you can either take the free shuttle bus or walk to the site. The shuttle bus line was incredibly long, so I chose to walk. This turned out to be the perfect choice. Walking allowed me to gradually see Mont Saint-Michel come into view, making it easier to capture the best shots. Plus, strolling towards the site was a lot of fun! Inside, I enjoyed browsing souvenir shops and eating gelato—it was a blast! The view from the high vantage points was absolutely stunning. Mont Saint-Michel, which inspired the castle in "Tangled," was truly worth visiting. I'm so glad I went!

Rennes, a small city in western France. Maison à colombages. The buildings with walls like the picture above are timber-framed houses with wooden frames. It is said that Hennes has the most timber-framed houses in Brittany. In fact, I could see many buildings with walls like this while walking around the city of Hennes. After learning about this in Hennes, I realized that some of the buildings in the city of Quimpy were also timber-framed houses. #Rennes travel #Small city travel #Suburban travel #Spontaneous travel #Trekking travel

In Rennes, there is no festival for a month, no concert for a day, and there is a sense of rhythm when walking here. The city of rock is not only a legend. So we stayed at a special rock hotel - the Le Magic Hall. The biggest highlight is that the hotel has a private band called "MB", which is dedicated to the guests. In the ktv mini private room, there is a zero-distance rock, my heart is really a bit unbearable. Le Magic Hall Hotel, although not gorgeous, is very interesting. The hotel was transformed from a movie theater. The owner still retains the temperament of some cinemas, and the old posters posted are everywhere. Each room in the room is different, with a flat floor and a loft duplex. In short, Le Magic Hall Hotel is a small, very interesting petty bourgeois hotel. There is something to say is not perfect, breakfast, only different kinds of bread, although delicious, it is slightly boring.

Beyond Paris's iconic Eiffel Tower and romantic boulevards, Normandy hides a spectacular gem straight out of a movie: Mont-Saint-Michel! This unique rocky islet stands majestically in a vast bay, featuring layers of stacked medieval architecture crowned by a thousand-year-old abbey. Viewed from afar, the entire island appears to float on the water—it's hard to believe such a place actually exists. ✨ 🏰 Three Reasons to Visit ⛪ A Thousand Years of History: Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey boasts a deep religious and architectural heritage, where Gothic design meets massive stone walls to create a singular medieval atmosphere. 🌊 Dramatic Tides: The surrounding bay experiences extreme tidal shifts. The landscape transforms completely between high and low tide, offering two distinct and breathtaking views. 🏘️ Historic Streets: As you climb the ancient stone steps, you'll be flanked by traditional shops and rustic buildings, feeling as though you've stepped back centuries into old-world Europe. 📸 Photography Tips For the best shot, capture the entire island from the connecting walkway to fit the towering spires and the expanse of the bay in one frame. The "golden hour" at sunset bathes the stone walls in a warm glow, making it a dream for landscape photographers. 📍 Location: 50170 Le Mont-Saint-Michel, Normandy, France 🚌 Getting There: Take a bus from cities like Rennes. Once at the visitor center/parking area, hop on the free shuttle. 🎟️ Entry to the village is free, but you’ll need a ticket to tour the abbey. ⏰ Recommended Stay: Half a day to a full day. ⚠️ Safety First: Never venture onto the mudflats alone. The tides, quicksand, and shifting terrain are dangerous. Always book a professional guide for bay explorations. The magic of Mont-Saint-Michel isn't just in its ancient walls; it's the way history, faith, and nature converge in this stunning bay. ❤️

We recommend these two spots: · Méandres: Navigate to "Méandres" and enter through the pasture fence near Place du Barrage. Here, you can capture the winding river and the castle in the same frame. The atmosphere is best at sunset. · Causeway to the island: On the boardwalk connecting to the parking lot, it's perfect for using a telephoto lens to capture the panoramic view of the mountain and its reflection in the water. The lighting is best for photos in the early morning or evening. 🚗 How to get there? From Paris, the "train + bus" option is highly recommended: · Train: Take the TGV from Paris Montparnasse station to Rennes, about 1.5–2 hours. · Bus: At the bus terminal next to Rennes train station, transfer to the Keolis Armor direct bus, about 1 hour and 10 minutes. · Upon arrival: All vehicles park at the main parking lot. Transfer to the free shuttle bus (Le Passeur) for about 10 minutes to reach the island. 💡 Practical tips · Tides: If you want to photograph the "island in the sea," be sure to check the tide table in advance. The mountain is only completely surrounded by water during high tide. · Attire: There are many slopes and stone steps on the island, so non-slip, comfortable shoes are more important than anything else. · Time: If your schedule allows, staying overnight lets you experience the sunset, night view, and early morning all in one trip, doubling your chances of getting great shots.

Our adventure through France was next-level amazing—seriously, we’re talking major main character energy! Let’s break down the highlights of our unforgettable journey: Paris was the ultimate vibe. Strolling along the Champs-Élysées (Avenue des Champs-Élysées, 75008 Paris), we soaked up iconic Parisian glam, snapped pics near the Eiffel Tower (Champ de Mars, 5 Avenue Anatole France, 75007 Paris), and basically lived our best café life at every cute spot we found. The late summer sun felt dreamy as we relaxed in local parks like Jardin du Luxembourg (75006 Paris) and Parc Monceau (35 Boulevard de Courcelles, 75008 Paris). At night, we took things underground and explored the legendary Catacombs of Paris (1 Avenue du Colonel Henri Rol-Tanguy, 75014 Paris, open daily 9am–8:30pm). The history and skull-lined corridors were totally mind-blowing! 🗝️💀 Next stop: Rennes! The classic French architecture here was absolute goals—seriously, every building could be a postcard. We sipped espresso at cozy local cafés (try Café Albertine, 1 Place Saint-Anne, 35000 Rennes) and marveled at the beauty of St Anne’s Square (Place Sainte-Anne, 35000 Rennes). Rennes just radiated old-world charm. Pure magic! Our journey then whisked us off to Mont Saint-Michel (50170 Le Mont-Saint-Michel), where we actually spent a night IN the magical city itself. The majestic abbey felt straight out of a fantasy novel—walking around was surreal. The scenery? Off the charts. We had a meal worth writing home about (plus local beers—chef’s kiss! 🍻) at one of the town’s traditional restaurants. Mont Saint-Michel is open all day, but the abbey typically welcomes visitors from 9:30am–6pm. Final destination: Colmar! This fairy-tale city blends French charm with German Alsace vibes. Wandering along historic canals and through bustling local markets was straight-up enchanting. We hit up boutiques and enjoyed a German-inspired meal (think sauerkraut, sausages, and French wine—what a combo!) while watching the sunset reflect off the water. The pace here was wonderfully slow—perfect for getting lost in the moment. Don’t miss La Petite Venise (Little Venice) for those perfect IG snaps! As we wrapped up our French dream tour, we couldn’t help but feel so grateful for all the incredible places we saw and the lovely people who greeted us everywhere. Kindness, laughter, and epic memories—France really served it all. We’re still smiling. Vive la France, and to all the adventures yet to come! 🇫🇷💫 P.S. Today, I had the chance to stroll through Rennes, the capital of Brittany in western France—a city overflowing with historic buildings, cobblestone streets, and that simple French charm. But what caught my eye the most today wasn't the tourist spots or the pretty cafes; it was the absolute stillness of the city on a Sunday. Almost all the shops are closed, and the streets that are usually buzzing with people feel surprisingly empty and quiet. At first, I was a little taken aback, being used to cities that are lively seven days a week. But as I slowed down and watched locals spending time with their families, relaxing in the parks, or just cycling by, I began to realize that this Sunday silence is just another charming part of life here. Sometimes, travel isn't just about chasing famous spots or the trendiest cafes. It’s about feeling the rhythm of a city’s daily life. For Rennes on a Sunday, this quiet, slightly lonely vibe gives the city a unique charm all its own. 📍 Rennes, France 🇫🇷

This morning I started my day with a stroll through the Marché des Lices, the famous morning market in Rennes, which is considered one of France's largest open-air markets. Since the early hours, the market has been buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all gathering to pick up fresh ingredients from Brittany’s farmers and fishermen. The real showstoppers are the seafood stalls lined up across the market, especially the fresh oysters that the region is so famous for. 🦪 When you're in Brittany, you simply have to try them. I ordered a set of fresh oysters and enjoyed them right there at the stall. They were shucked to order right in front of me and served with just a squeeze of lemon. The taste was fresh, sweet, and full of the ocean's essence. For seafood lovers, this is an experience you shouldn't miss. Beyond the seafood, the market is filled with cheese, bread, croissants, fruits, vegetables, meats, and plenty of local goods. The atmosphere is vibrant, filled with the colors and aromas of French food. What I love most is seeing the authentic local way of life. There are no grand landmarks or long queues for photos. Just people out shopping, chatting, and living a simple Saturday morning. Sometimes, truly getting to know a city isn't always about visiting museums or famous landmarks. It’s about waking up early, heading to a local market, and enjoying fresh oysters in the heart of that city’s atmosphere. And this morning in Rennes was another morning that made me fall in love with Brittany even more. ❤️🦪 📍 Marché des Lices, Rennes, France 🇫🇷

Souvenirs in Brittany are next-level—seriously, you’ll want to buy *everything* you see! From classic Breton stripes to yummy salted butter caramels, local shops have it all. 🧂🍬 A must-visit is La Maison du Kouign-Amann (15 Rue Paul Bert, 35400 Saint-Malo), famous for their iconic buttery pastries and unique foodie gifts. Don’t miss out on adorable ceramics and traditional Breton shirts (a.k.a. marinières)—they make the cutest presents for your friends (or for yourself, no judging 😜). Most souvenir shops around Saint-Malo and Rennes open daily, from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM—so there’s plenty of time to shop ‘til you drop! Pro tip: Check out Les Portes de Bretagne (2 Place du Parlement de Bretagne, 35000 Rennes) for handmade jewelry, local cider, and sea-salt treats that scream “Brittany vibes only.” ✨ If you’re a magnet or postcard collector, you’re in luck—practically every corner has a stash of those iconic Brittany designs! Long story short: shopping for souvenirs here is *dangerously* easy. 😍 So save some room in your suitcase—you’ll thank me later! #localsouvenirs

🧀 Unexpected Encounters on the Road Visiting local markets is one of my favorite parts of traveling. It's where you see local ingredients and get a glimpse into daily life—a different kind of culinary discovery than what you find in restaurants. This time in Rennes, I visited La Criée – Marché Central. ⸻ 🧈 The Unforgettable Butter from 12 Years Ago The day before, I had Maison Bordier butter and cheese at a restaurant in Saint-Malo. I actually first discovered Bordier 12 years ago when I first visited Saint-Malo. I was so moved by the taste that I’ve made it a point to bring their butter home every time I visit France, even if I don't go back to Saint-Malo. On this trip, I revisited Saint-Malo—the city where I first "met" Bordier—only to find they were closed that day. Disappointed as I was, the very next day at the Rennes market, I came across a whole display of Maison Bordier butter and cheese. ☺︎ ⸻ 🧀 Taking Market Cheese to Paris This time, I picked up some Beillevaire cheese. I chose the Rove de Provence, which was a beautifully fragrant and delicious cheese. Since I was still traveling, I couldn't bring it back to Japan, so I took it along with some deli items to my next stop, Paris. I spread it out in my hotel room and enjoyed it with some fresh bread. Eating market finds later that day at your destination—that is one of the true joys of travel. ⸻ 🥗 Authentic French Flavors at the Market In the deli section, the Museau vinaigrette maison caught my eye. The refreshing vinaigrette was wonderful, and I enjoyed it paired with cheese and bread. Markets are full of things like this—items you might not think to order at a restaurant, but feel compelled to try because you're in a new place. ⸻ 🌱 My May Favorite in Europe In May, the markets are overflowing with seasonal asparagus. For me, enjoying asparagus is a highlight of traveling through Europe in May. I can't take it home to Japan, but seeing piles of it at the market makes me think, "Ah, I’m so glad I could visit during this season again." Funnily enough, once I see them at the market, I almost instinctively order them whenever I spot them on a restaurant menu later in the trip. Traveling to follow the seasons—I really love that style of trip. ⸻ 🇫🇷 A Moment at La Criée – Marché Central Bordier butter. Beillevaire cheese. Market deli finds. And May asparagus. Each is just a small detail, yet they connect 12-year-old memories to Saint-Malo, then to dinner in Paris. Walking through a market slowly builds up travel memories. That’s why I love visiting them so much. ⸻ 📍 Market Information La Criée – Marché Central Rennes, France 🧀 Cheese & Butter 🥩 Charcuterie 🥗 Deli & Prepared Foods 🥬 Seasonal Vegetables 🥖 Bread & More

Day 1: Journey to the Enchanted Mountain, Explore the Abbey Morning: Depart from Paris by high-speed train to Rennes, then seamlessly transfer to a direct bus to Mont Saint-Michel. The journey takes approximately 3.5 hours; an early departure is recommended to avoid crowds. Upon arrival at the visitor center, pick up a free map and tide table. Lunch: Enjoy a light lunch near the visitor center at the foot of the mountain, then take the free shuttle bus or walk up the causeway. Recommended: Try Normandy cider with crêpes. The walk up the causeway takes about 30 minutes, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of Mont Saint-Michel. Afternoon: Climb the steps along the main street, Grande Rue, to the top to visit the abbey. The main street can be crowded; it's advisable to slip through side streets or along the city wall walkways to avoid tour groups. The abbey is the heart of the island; be sure to rent an audio guide, focusing on the "Miracle Tower" and the cloisters. The West Terrace offers the best vantage point for overlooking the bay and capturing panoramic views. Dinner: Experience the signature dishes of a century-old restaurant on the island. Recommended: La Mère Poulard, the signature soufflé omelet is a must-try (be patient while waiting). After dinner, don't rush back to your room; the Mont Sainte light show after nightfall is truly magical. Day 2: Tidal Spectacle and Old Town Stroll Early Morning: Wake up early to enjoy the tranquility of Mont Sainte, or head to the breakwater to photograph the sunrise and tides. During high tide, witness the rapid rise of the tide, turning Mont Sainte into an island in an instant. The light is soft at this time, and there are few tourists, making it the golden time to photograph stunning reflections. Morning: Head to the North Wall Walk or hike around the bay. The city wall walk offers beautiful scenery with fewer crowds and unique perspectives. If your energy allows, walk to the opposite bank of the Couénon River bend to photograph the classic "reflection in the water." Lunch: After checking out, have lunch at the foot of the mountain or back in Rennes city center. Upon returning to Rennes, we recommend enjoying an authentic French lunch in the Old Town. Rennes' old town boasts numerous half-timbered houses, perfect for a leisurely stroll and photo opportunity after dinner. Afternoon: Take the high-speed train back to Paris, concluding your trip. If time permits, you can visit Saint-Malo, the Pirate Town (requires additional days). It is recommended to purchase return tickets around 5:00 PM to allow ample time. 💡 Practical Tips 1. Transportation Tickets: It is recommended to purchase early bird tickets for the high-speed train between Paris and Rennes on the SNCF website in advance; bus tickets from Rennes to Mont Sainte can be purchased at the station or on the website (Keolis), but advance booking is essential during peak season. 2. Tidal Safety: The bay experiences significant tidal fluctuations; never leave the safety walkways and venture into the mudflats, as you are likely to sink into the mud and face the risk of high tide. 3. Clothing Recommendations: The cobblestone paths on the island are steep and slippery; comfortable, non-slip flat shoes are essential. The sea is windy, so a windproof jacket is necessary regardless of the season. 4. Accommodation Options: Island hotels (e.g., La Vieille Auberge): Offer an immersive medieval atmosphere and great night views, but are expensive and require booking months in advance. Hotels on the opposite shore (e.g., Mercure Mont Saint-Michel): Offer good value, new facilities, and balconies with panoramic views of Mont Saint-Michel; suitable for those driving or seeking comfort.
