After breakfast, take a stroll or jog along the seaside promenade all the way to Puerto Banús. This area is filled with yachts and sailboats and is the hub for boutiques, cafes, and restaurants. ➡️Yunque National Forest (P8-p15) As the only tropical rainforest in the United States, we chose not to join the usual group water activities. Instead, we wanted to hike on our own, so we drove up to a higher spot first, then hiked for 40 minutes to Mt. Britton Tower (P9-10). From the tower, you can overlook the entire rainforest. It’s hard to capture in photos, but the view is stunning in person. There is actually a higher peak, El Yunque Peak (P8-9), but the one-way hike takes 1.8 hours. We thought it was too long and didn’t take that trail. If you have enough time and energy, you can challenge yourself to reach it. We hiked the rainforest on December 3rd. It was very comfortable inside the forest, with very few mosquitoes, so no need to bring insect repellent. After reaching the top, we drove down the mountain and visited various spots, many with small waterfalls where you can play in the water. I wore a bikini under my clothes, so I just took off my outerwear when playing in the water. You can bring a towel to dry off after playing in the water. You don’t need special shoes for this route; your regular sneakers are fine. It’s not like the other trail to the waterfall jump spot that can ruin your shoes. ➡️Castillo San Felipe del Morro (501 Calle Norzagaray, San Juan, 00901, Puerto Rico) Old San Juan Castle (P1-7) – The ticket for this castle is valid for two days. The castle is really beautiful, especially the seaside view from the top. Inside, there are many exhibits about the history of the old town. The old town is also nice, with colorful houses. You can stroll street by street, and there are many small shops selling souvenirs. However, the streets in the old town are very narrow and parking is difficult. There are many parking lots though; just search for “park” on Google Maps. The fees are reasonable. We parked in the underground lot next to the castle, which cost $13.5 for 6 hours, charged by the hour. This castle is definitely worth a visit!

Exploring Old San Juan was absolutely gorgeous—colorful colonial streets, historic forts, and lively plazas filled with music and charm. Every corner felt like stepping into a postcard. On another day, we headed out to Piñones, where the beach is wild, breezy, and beautifully local. The ocean views were stunning, and the street-side kiosks served some of the most delicious Puerto Rican food. We even had the best mango smoothie ever at one of the local kiosks along the road—fresh, sweet, and perfect for the tropical heat. Two amazing days filled with culture, flavor, and island vibes. The performances were lively, full of rhythm, interaction, and joy. Every detail is designed to deliver not just drinks but a full experience. We absolutely loved everything—the service, decor, music, performances, and above all, the vibrant energy of the place. Definitely a spot I’d return to and highly recommend for an authentic, flavor-packed, joyful Puerto Rican experience.

🏨 Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve I’ve long wanted to experience this kind of getaway—not just a standard beach resort, but a place where the architecture seamlessly dissolves into the surrounding nature. 💰 Our total for 4 days / 3 nights — approx. $13,000 for two. The room was about $2,000/night, plus a resort fee of roughly $180/night. Flights were around $400 per person round-trip. However, the highlight of the trip had nothing to do with the room or the beach. 🌿 Tree House Spa This is an absolute must-try. The entire spa experience takes place literally nestled among the trees and tropical flora—it feels as if you’ve been transported directly from the hotel into the heart of the jungle. The hotel only has two tree houses, making them notoriously hard to book. If you’re traveling as a couple, don’t expect to have simultaneous treatments—you’ll want to snag any available slots well in advance. Inside, there’s a private hot pool, a cold plunge, and an outdoor shower. Every detail is thoughtfully designed, and you might even spot a massive local lizard during your session 🦎 🏖️ The Beach The resort is divided into two areas: West Beach and East Beach. The staff generally recommends West Beach as the superior choice. But be aware: reality might not match your expectations. West Beach feels more like a vast natural pool. Most of the accessible area is shallow, with reefs blocking the way further out. If you’re looking for a long, open-water swim, this isn't the best spot. Water activities are also quite limited—mostly just floats and paddleboards. 🍽️ The Dining Scene COA — This is where breakfast is served. It’s decent, but lacks any real culinary surprises: just your standard, high-end resort breakfast. Encanto — My personal favorite. It offers the best beach fine-dining atmosphere: great service, a lovely vibe, and a menu where it was hard to find a miss. Positivo — The resort’s sole Asian dining option, blending Japanese, Thai, and Chinese cuisines. The sushi was good, but the curries were overly salty, and the Dan-Dan noodles were literally just instant ramen 😅 However, I highly recommend the coconut chicken soup. Sucasa — A very atmospheric spot with a Mediterranean feel and Asian accents. While the interior and vibe are top-tier, the food was less impressive. ❌ A specific "avoid" recommendation: The oxtail fried rice. There was about as much oxtail in that dish as there is snow in Puerto Rico 🐮🈚️ ✨ Final Thoughts For me, the Tree House Spa was the true justification for the trip—a rare instance where the treatment itself was more memorable than the room or the beach. Dorado Beach is really about nature, privacy, stunning grounds, and "slow luxury" rather than a jam-packed resort schedule. If you’re looking for ten different activities a day and a perfect swimming beach, it might feel a bit too quiet. But if you want to disappear for a few days among the palms, the jungle, and the ocean, the atmosphere here is truly one of a kind. 📍 Dorado, Puerto Rico 🇵🇷

A small exhibition on the second floor of the Yuz Museum. It's free and worth a look if you're passing by. The exhibition is the size of one main gallery. It's very colorful. At first glance, the theme seems to be housewives shopping. My baby really liked the colors and a "big cat 🐱" "Bodega" comes from Spanish. In this exhibition, it refers to the small corner grocery stores found throughout New York, similar to a "corner shop." As Puerto Ricans and Dominicans moved to New York, these grocery stores began to emerge and became social hubs where people of color from various backgrounds would meet. Bodegas are usually found in areas with few large supermarkets and are often the only places to buy food in some communities. Most of the food here is processed or canned, clearly highlighting a stark wealth gap: the wealthy enjoy healthy meals, while the poor can only use food stamps to exchange for unhealthy food. The attention from Marco, Andy, the chef, and the hotel staff was top-notch. Their service, courtesy, and overall care truly stood out. I absolutely recommend it 💯. We are from Puerto Rico, and the days we spent at the hotel were excellent. I must give credit to the chef—his chicken chaufa rice and grilled chicken breast, along with the muña tea, made our stay warm and delightful.

Carlos, Raldy, and Nelly are outstanding at the pool bar area. They are incredibly attentive, and as first-time visitors to the hotel, they made us want to come back. Truly, they are excellent. The hotel needs more employees who love their work and excel at customer service. We came from Puerto Rico and deeply appreciate how they made us feel right at home.

Puerto Rico surprised me before I even left the airport — the humid air, Spanish and English mixing on every sign, salsa drifting from a car window. Fifteen years ago, I added hiking to Machu Picchu to my bucket list. Born in Peru but raised in Puerto Rico, this trip was also a way to reconnect with my roots. The trek was challenging, yet it exceeded all my expectations. Choosing Salkantay Trekking was the best decision. Everything was amazing—breathtaking views, great group dynamics, comfortable accommodations, and little details like enjoying a hot shower after a tough day 😅. The team surprised me with a birthday cake, which was incredibly thoughtful and made the trip even more special. It added a heartfelt moment to an already extraordinary experience. Our guide, Carlos, known as “The Mountain King,” was phenomenal. His passion for Peru and the Quechua people, combined with his vast knowledge and engaging personality, truly elevated the journey. The daughter of an older hiker had underestimated the trek's challenges and booked it for her mother, which created a tough moment for everyone. The check-in process was very simple, and since we arrived early, they provided helpful suggestions (even marking them on a map they gave us), stored our luggage, and promptly notified us when our room was ready. The room itself was beautiful and extremely clean, equipped with everything we needed. The hotel offers a delicious and complete breakfast buffet. The rooftop has an exceptional view and a small yet cozy pool. Our favorite part? The bar staff—THE BEST! Gastón, Daniel, Jesús, Luis, María, and the other team members were beyond friendly and attentive throughout our 8-night stay, making it truly unforgettable. We left a piece of our hearts in Madrid and brought back the best memories to Puerto Rico 🇵🇷.

The mossy half is the ridge spur: Sphagnum on the tabonuco buttress, Thuidium on the trail edge, Hymenophyllum on the tree fern, and a Taino batey clearing where the cloud sits at 8 a.m. I drove from San Germán (rental 45 USD/day, card), paid nothing at the gate (free forest), walked at 7:30 a.m. in January. Lowland 29°C, ridge 19°C, moss dripping. Wore trail-runners; the loop is crushed limestone, the ridge spur mud. Mistake: I arrived at 2 p.m. in July — ridge fog burned to grey, no bird call, the Taino clearing looked like a lawn, moss flat. 7–9 a.m. Second mistake: I didn't bring 1 USD cash for the honor-box trail map (card useless, the ranger station was closed). Third: I touched a petroglyph replica "for texture" — sign: "replica resin, oil damages it, 100 USD fine". Buy in Maricao town: a 4 USD coffee-and-guanime, not the 20 USD tourist stop. Gear: 1 L water, 40 USD shell — Maricao mists 10 hrs/day. Local rule: free entry, no drone in state forest, no touching petroglyphs (even replicas), stay on the 0.8 km loop + signed spur. The moss on the tabonuco flare is the cloud's catch — step on cut limestone. Opinion: Maricao is the free 30-min Taino+moss loop 2 hr from San Juan and the ridge spur is the 15-min half with zero El Yunque crowds.
